I posted this on the NSBR board, but this is relevant here to scrappers.

Get in the Picture

This is a story by Allison Tate and it is short and fabulous. Her memories of her own mom made me cry.

TFS I just read it and I agree the part about her own mama made me cry as well.

I shared the article with my Facebook friends.

Oh gosh....I should have grabbed the kleenex first.

This Saturday, the 6th, would have been my momma's 65th birthday. She's been gone for almost 5 years and I miss her more than words can say.

Thank you for sharing this.....I'm just as guilty as the next woman for not allowing my picture to be taken. Now, this really makes me think.

Great story. Thank you for sharing. I've been making an effort this year to get in the picture no matter how much I hate to do it. Looking back on all the pics, I'm glad I've done it. I especially cherish the pics I've taken with my three year-old nephew. I'm only sad I didn't start when he was a baby.

I just shared this on Facebook. I have several friends who actively avoid the camera, and then wonder why their daughters do the same thing. And I need to do better myself. Thanks for sharing!

Wow-that was such a great written piece. I hate having my photo taken, but I can now really understand how very important it is. Such a great reminder!

It made me tear up to read it, but then I really cried when I saw all the other moms posting their pictures! So awesome!

this is something near and dear to me .. and this is just a copy of what I posted on the NSBR ..

just to add another layer to this .. when I was putting together the pictures for the slide presentation at Kaitlyn's funeral I was only able to find ONE picture of her and I .. ONE FREAKING picture .. and not another chance to take any more .. Get in front of the camera PLEASE .. one picture is not enough when it is the only one .. Hugs Cheri

Oh Kim - I am so sorry for your loss.

Cheri - that makes me so sad to hear that. Such a sad lesson for us all. I cannot remember the last picture I took with my kids - it had to be at least 2 years ago.

My mom never got in the picture for everyday shots. One time a photographer came around to take portraits of kids and my mom signed up.
In one of his shots, she is unaware that she is in the background, watching us. She's wearing her capris and house shoes. It is the only picture I have of her like she was everyday.

When I used to teach basic scrapbooking I used to caution against cropping out the background; the focus only on the face phenomenon. Because if my mom had been a scrapbooker like we are, she would have cropped herself right off that picture to have a centered photo of her kids. And I would not have that photo to remind me of how my mom looked when I was growing up.

Since I started Project Life this year, I've tried to take a photo of the three of us together at least once a month. It's hard when I'm always the one behind the camera.

That was one of the most beautiful articles I have ever read. Thank you for sharing. The author was really pretty.

My DS flew away a few years ago. I don't take pictures. I was attacked a few years ago and I have scars. It has made me very shy. I avoid cameras like the plague.

I was visiting my Mom a couple of weeks ago and she goes running in her bedroom and comes running back out with this huge photo of me and my son. I just cringed. She was so excited to find this photo. She said she was so proud of it because I was so beautiful in it. She kept saying "You were such a beautiful Mommy!" She kept saying how the light showed in my eyes how much I loved my son.

She then goes on to tell me she is now showing all her friends and their daughters this photo. I just want to die now. I am so embarrassed. Her friends and their daughters said I looked like a model. Why don't I come around more often. My Mom told them all I see is my scars. They couldn't find any scars.

I spent my son's life avoiding cameras because I have scars that nobody else sees. That article hit me hard because my baby is grown up. He only has one picture of us together. I really don't remember where my Mom got that picture.

You know we are our own worst critics.

lylacfey, if you wanted me to cry some more, you just succeeded. What a great story about how beautiful you are, but how sad you don't have more pictures. I hope this changes your mind and you take lots and lots of pictures now.

Especially this:

I am not perfect to look at and I am not perfect to love, but I am perfectly their mother.

And this:

My mother's body is the vessel that carries all the memories of my childhood.
