I wrote this on the Pub where I used to hang out, but wanted to post it here, too, to get your thoughts on how you use social media. I've been out of the loop a while and feel disconnected!

Hi everyone I took a few years off and would love to make new friends on various message boards, etc., but I'm a little confused where everyone went - lol. Maybe just the economy and everyone is working so hard and can't spend on scrapping anymore, for one thing.

The Pub is at a standstill, and that's too bad. Although I'm not that interested in being published anymore, I do miss the fast-moving board! Would like to chat a bit more than is there, though, and have tried joining in more conversations here, although I do read a lot! Hope to contribute to the boards more. I do miss the commraderie, inspiration and smiles I used to find here and other places.

So I've visited lots of smaller message boards. They all seem to be pretty slow. A scrap question of the day and some NSBR stuff and that's it. Galleries and gallery comments seem pretty dead, which makes me sad. Love a good gallery with lots of comments! I love supporting others but it just seems like that isn't done anymore.

So where is everybody? Are people just using their own blogs now, really? Are people on Facebook? Pinterest? All of these things and that's why everything is sparse? I'd rather not use my personal FB page for scrapping and overwhelm folks I know who don't scrap. Do folks make their own personal FB page just for scrapping? Where do you find FB scrapping friends, I wonder?

Just what I've noticed over the last few months. Any insight is appreciated!

I went back to the kit clubs/online retailer forums and galleries I used to love, but they are all gone now So sad.

ETA I went ahead and made a facebook simply for scrapping, but do you guys do that? How do you find friends? Here's the link:

As the magazines died the Pub died. The Pub had become a recipe swap blog hop and not much actual publication related info. In my opinion it outlived its premise and stayed on life support long after someone should have pulled the plug.

There are still quite a few people here on GS.

My choice is to not take it personally - people have opinions. Particularly people here.-Peabay 12/29/11

Just guessing here, but it's probably a combination of things:

The downturn in the economy means less people with extra $ to spend on a hobby like this. I know if I could not spend $ on scrapping anymore, I'd have to stay away from here. The temptations are too great and my willpower too weak.

Plus, most hobbies hit a peak in popularity and I think scrapping hit that mark and it's popularity has declined a bit. There's still many of us "lifers" but maybe less of those who dabble in it and move on.

And then, as you mentioned, the other outlets for social media. I don't have a scrapping Facebook page. As a matter of fact, I don't have any Facebook page because I'm not into that but I'm guessing it's drawn others away. I can tell you as a long-time participant on the FSOT board here that ever since two Facebook pages opened to buy and sell used scrapping stuff, the FSOT board here has less activity.

As to your question about how I make scrapping friends, this is it. It's enough for me, but as I said I'm not much into social media. Even in person, I'm a "loner" scrapper.

Hope you're able to connect with some friends...

Thanks for your replies! I went ahead and made a Facebook page pretty much just for my scrapping stuff/talk/seeing other's work come through and left my personal page out of my scrapping stuff to not overwhelm anyone - lol.

The pub died because there are no magazines or contests left to support it.

I feel this board has had a resurgance of sorts in the last few months. It is moving at a much quicker pace with lots of new faces.

I personally feel facebook is drifting away from the "coolness" it had-- more people I know are closing down their accounts. I personally do not use it for scrapbooking- The gallery here has enough inspiration and when that fails I have a ton of blogs to visit on my googlereader.

The Pub's been pretty dead for several years. This board had a bit of a flat period but then it perked right up, seems like. I have been distracted by home selling prep for the last 3-4 months and my studio is a little bit torn apart, but we decided last weekend to hold off on listing our house until around mid-March or mid-April, so now I am back. I am still selling off some of my stuff, but I have such a lot that it will hardly make a dent . I don't really want to be out of the scrappy loop all winter and into the spring, so I am going to regroup, put my room back together, and get back in the groove. I have been deliberately staying away from the GS board so as not to get sucked into the "must have this" cycle but I really dig this whole papercrafty thing we do, so I don't want to stay away for a whole year. Did that once--didn't like it!

Right now I am upstairs literally waiting for paint to dry on a dresser I am redoing in chalk paint, and I have a few more projects I would like to get out of the way, but after that I think it is time to put things back together and at least get back to where I can at least scrapbook a little bit. My desk is gone (we turned into a laundry folding table for home staging purposes) but I have a little one in there I think I can make work. I really do miss it!

When I went to edit my signature, the "Edit Signature" title was spelled wrong. So that was distracting and I forgot what I wanted my new signature to be.

I did pretty much the same thing you did with a fb page, for the same reasons. Just created it very recently also...silly thing is though, I don't fb much lol.

I agree with myboys.. the pub has died somewhat due to magazines dying, which is sad really. Though I'd hate to see the pub board go all the same, I think there are still things that we all could talk about related to the industry.

I think all up, the poor economy has just hit everything, so people are less likely to start a hobby or continue with one. Then factor in the mags closing, less ideas, availability and visibility for scrapping, the move toward more mixed media and art journaling etc (which I think is great myself), I've noticed those mags are still out there a bit.

But other countries still have a pretty good industry.. Australia for example has quite a number of scrapbooking and stamping magazines out still, and import some from Britain also.

Thanks for the continued answers. The new FB page seems to be what I was missing to feel a little more connected
