Help looking at getting a photo printer not sure which to get. I have a Canon camera and an iPhone 4S if that make a difference. I want pros and cons of both and are they compatible price wise for the photos? Is there a website to compare them side by side

Thanks Carrie

I am not 100% sure of this, but I think that with the Selphy you can only use glossy paper; the Charm offers glossy and a matte finish.

Love my selphy. The 900 prints from the Iphone, so you might want to take that into consideration. I like that I can get my selphy refills on Amazon (in 2 days with prime) for around 30 bucks (sometimes even less) for 108 prints. I like that I also can get refills from Best Buy, Target or Staples in a pinch. I love that it is a dye sublimation printer and not ink - I can't deal with the clogged nozzle issue that the charm at times can have. I went back and forth between the Charm and the Selphy, but I am so glad I decided on the Selphy.

This board has many Charm fans, but if you go to another site, like Studio Calico you can hear from happy Selphy users. I think that might be a better way to get diverse opinions.

I have a Selphy but have been having a very hard time getting refills for it. When I do find them I pick up a couple.

I have had both. I would not buy another Charm - cute as it is. I went through 3 Epsons before I wised up and switched to the Selphy. If you don't use it for a while the printheads get clogged and you have to use up ink to clear them. Very annoying and costly. I admit the prints are awesome, but in my opinion, not worth it. Once I was on the phone with tech support because my pictures had lines across them. They had me clean the darn thing six times, using up an entire ink cartridge. They ended up replacing the printer but refused to replace the ink. The Selphy prints lovely photos and never have an issue even if I don't use it for months. Also, I just checked Best Buy today and the Charm costs twice as much as the Selphy.

I have both, but I prefer the prints I get from the Charm. However, as mentioned above, the print heads on the Charm can get clogged. I did not use my Charm for about 3 months, and when I went to use it last weekend I had to run through the clean print head routine about 5 times before I got good prints again. The Selphy does not clog.

And as mentioned there is a new Selphy that will print directly from your iPhone.

I usually get refills for the Selphy from Target or Fry's Electronics. I get my Charm refills from Fry's.

If I had to pick just one, I would get the Charm (because of the print quality), but the new Selphy is tempting. I would love to print directly from my iPhone.

I have a Charm due to the Pea enabling (ahem Penny!) and I love it. It prints both matte and glossy beautifully, it's just personal preference. A close friend has the Selphy and her pics are great too. So there's a vote for each- didn't help did it?

I usually order matte photos because I can't stand fingerprints on the images. Because of this, the Charm is appealing. The ink clogging potential is a drawback, so I'm also looking at the Selphy. I know the website says it has a protective clear coating. Do you have fingerprint issues like traditional glossy prints?

I have a charm and I love it. Never had any clogging issues but then again the longest it has gone without use is about 2 weeks. Seriously the best photo quality I could have asked for. I love glossy so that's what I use most, but love having the option of matte. I purchase my refills on amazon using our prime membership and Santa is also suppose to be putting a couple refills in my stocking . Good Luck with your decision!!!

Fairchild - you can get fingerprints on the Selphy prints- they wipe off very easily though. I usually try not to touch my photos with bare hands...I sort of cover my fingers with my sleeves and then adhere the photo to the page.

Great question. I have the same one. Does the Charm print from your iPhone/Android?

Does anyone know why you cannot print matte pics with a Selphy?

Check you local Target. Two of the ones I have been to have the Selphy CP800 compact photo printer on clearance. I saw it for as low as $30.00. Is that a good printer?

Vote for the Charm here. Research the longevity of the ink! It's the only long term choice - lasting beauty!!

30 bucks for a selphy is awesome. Great clearance price.

I have never seen a charm in person...no stores i have been to seem to have it. But i like the dye sub printing better so the selphy was a great choice for me. Glad i didn't allow myself to be swayed by some peas here. I listened to selphy owners on other boards and I am happy.

Selphy ink is guaranteed for 100 years. That is long enough for me. It is not like any company truly knows how long their inks will last anyway. It is all theory until that 100 years passes.

Syln11 could you tell me why you like that type of print better? Sorry, just trying to look at all my options. And Charm users can you print from an iPhone?

Does anyone know if Selphy can print matte pics? I know the C900 is the most current model.

Love all the info. I am in the market for one as well. I have never had a photo printer before. I did a post on here earlier, so you might want to check it out as well, as I have had lots of great replies too.

Just wondering what size prints you can do on either printer. I usually print my pics from Cosco (.13 each) and I can get a discount if I print a large batch. But I was looking for a printer for that occasional reprint or if I want a 5 x 7 or smaller than a 4 x 6. Does anyone know what the options would be?

You can print any size pic smaller than 4x6 with both the charm and Selphy. I use the printers through my computer (iphoto and photoshop) and there is a custom option where you can change the size of your pictures. Also, I sometimes go into photoshop and put 2 or 3 pics on a 4x6 sized canvas and print that out.

The Selphy does have one cool feature, it will do a random collage of up to 8 pics you choose.

The Selphys only print on glossy paper, no matte. I think it has to do with the dye-sublimation process.

The Charm will not print directly from an iPhone.

Thanks for all the replies I'm now no closer to a decision! I like the idea of printing straight from my iPhone and the glossy only dosent bother me so I may get the Selphy but then again....

Thanks Carrie

I think the paper may be a bit pricier with the Selphy printer for what you get compared to the Charm. Who is only going to buy a pack of 18 sheets. The biggest they make is a 108 sheet box for 33.00.

Question: Do you have to buy black ink and color ink packs for the Selphy? I see a color one on Amazon, but no black.
Thanks!

someone told me today that the Selphy prints are "slightly" smaller than 4x6 and causes them not to fit in a divided page protector tightly. Any experience with this?
