thankfully not...but I'm sure I'll have one eventually that will make me want to tear my hair out.
luckily for me, I'm the only one (in my family) that crafts so all cards and whatnots have been very appreciated.
Now ask me if I've gone crazy MAKING a craft gift that the reciever wouldn't have ever noticed my mistake, but yet I lost sleep over it? Now that's a different story

I spent months making a needlework picture for my sister. Everyone thought it was beautiful. I went to visit her a year later and found it in her closet just laying on the shelf. I had even matched her curtains, furniture, etc. I ended up taking it home with me and she never even noticed it was missing.
I made a Christmas scrapbook for my mother and she ended up leaving it at my sister's house. I found it the next Christmas. She never missed it.
I made a photo calendar for the family one year. My parents used theirs but my sister just put hers in a drawer and never looked at it.
I don't make craft items for family anymore. |

I have two nephews and one niece. I made each of them a scrapbook covering 18 years for high school graduation. My sister had never (and will never) scrapped a photo in her life. I solicited input from the whole extended family, we all journaled our stories and shared our photos. These are AWESOME books and everyone raved. By the time I got to niece (who lived with me every summer for 8 years) I had a 90-page book.
So where's the kicker? Those adult nephews are now 33 and 30, they have wives, kids, families, good jobs, houses. Niece is 25 and doing great. My sister still has all three books LOCKED IN A CLOSET in her house and won't let her children take them to their own homes. On a really special occasion, she will unlock the closet and "check them out" to the real owners for viewing, in her home only, at her dining room table only. She says they're not yet responsible enough to have them.
Trust me, this is not how I planned it! Perhaps this is a case of my sister appreciating my work a little TOO much? |

My best friend and I always make gifts for each other. Maybe we both appreciate them more because we know the time and effort spent in making them.
I also make calendars for my mom and grandma every year for Christmas. They actually request them.

I was an ambitious newbie when I first started scrapping. I actually made a gift mini album for my SIL for her baby shower.
Man I cringe just thinking I gave that thing to her. I used clipart that I inked within an inch of it's life, I used stickers that were baby themed but clearly didn't match the paper (truly ugly paper at that)...and I really left her no room for photos. Terrible.
I feel like I owe her some sort of replacement now that I have more experience with scrapbooking. |

The needlework picture ended up at my younger sister's house and is still on her wall so it ended up being loved, well at least used. She also took several other pictures I had made when my older sister died. |

Lynette I think your sister might be my mom's twin LOL
That sounds like something she would do. I had to take my childhood photos from her house without her permission. And it's a good thing I did because she "lost" all the photos.
If I make any mistakes in my scrapbooks my family will never notice. I try to never make something for someone unless they specifically ask me to because so many people are unappreciative of the effort that goes into it. |

I think handmade (just like store bought) can be hit or miss depending on the person, their tastes, likes, etc.
I've had a friend make me a covered album (remember those padded ones, often involving lace, that was a trend way back?). It wasn't my taste though and I never used it that I recall. |

My mother was like that. We could have/fight over them after she was dead. But one day I was there before she moved I told her I was taking all the pictures that had me in them.
I think that's why I was determined for my kids to have their own albums. |

Lascrapper, at least you know the scrapbook gifts you made were liked, maybe a little bit too much!
I don't have any real horror stories, although I have been a recipient of some handmade gifts that I probably didn't appreciate as much as the giver would have liked. I appreciated the thought, but the patterns and styles just weren't to my taste so I never really used them.

This. My aunt is a crafter, but she's what I'd refer to as a "beginner" even though she's been at it for years. She's stuck in the early 90s of crafting. Which is FINE, don't get me wrong. She loves what she does and her mother (my recently passed Nana) was guaranteed to like anything either of us made for her as long as it had her children/grandchildren in it. But when she makes ME things they don't really get used and her cards don't always get saved. It's not that I don't appreciate the effort; doing it myself I KNOW what goes into it. It's just they don't really fit with my style or décor.
I have another more "trendy" crafty friend that the things she gives me don't always get used either. But they're things I wouldn't have bought either because I don't have a use for them, not that I don't appreciate them. |

Years ago I hade a mini album for my mom of the pictures I had of us three girls together. About 6 in forty years. A few months after I gave it to mom my daughter told me mom had cut all the pictures out of it and put the pictures in one of those sticky albums. So I looked next time. She had cut out of the mini. She had cut out the outlines of all of us.
If she would have asked I could have given her normal prints. |

Several years ago I made my then co-teacher a flip-flop album for her birthday. She tossed it in the cabinet under the sink @ school & left it there. When I left a couple months later I just took it w/me, re-did some of it & gave it to my dh's dd. She said she liked it

Oh yes, the padded, lacy, ruffled scrapbook! We received one as a wedding gift, long before I scrapped, and it was never used. it was so over the top!
The only gift I made that I was not happy with is one I am working on now. I am crocheting a blanket for a cousin's baby boy and it's not coming out straight. Very frustrating. I am considering pulling it apart and starting over.
As for gifts I have made for others, I am careful about who I make albums for. I make them only for those who I know want one and I prepare myself for them not being as excited about receiving the gift as I am about making it. If one doesn't craft/scrap/crochet/etc., it's hard for them to understand what goes into such a project. |

gahh--i remember those ruffled photo albums. i found one that i made for my sister back in the late 80's. it was too funny.
as i'm getting ready for this year's handcrafted items, i have to remember that i enjoy making them and it's a fun time for me. whether the recipient keeps it or not is not within my control. |

But yeah, I am really concerned my grandmom isn't going to appreciate all the little details and embellies I'm putting on her scrapbook. Some of these stories are making me even more scared haha! |

a few years ago, I made 2 full size 12 by 12 scrapbooks, 2 8 by 8's and several gift bag mini's for gifts.
I've never seen any of them in use. I mean, normally, I would think, something like that would at least be on a side table or something... but not in this case. Between all of them, I spent well over $100 for paper alone. That doesn't include the pics and bags and all that jazz...
I can understand why one of them wouldn't be in use because it was a wedding album I made for my sister in law's little sister (whom divorced about 6 months after she got the album), but the 40 layout album I gave my sister in law... well I don't see why that one isn't in use... one of the 8 by 8's is in storage right now along with one of the gift bag mini's because my mother in law is living in north carolina for a year, so ok that can be allowed, but i just don't see why when we put so much time and effort into these gifts, why wouldn't they be gotten out occasionally ????
It took HOURS to make those layouts, I even drove to Daytona (3 hrs away) to do a few of the layouts because I needed the input of a fellow scrapper. Really breaks my heart to know that my gifts weren't appreciated... |

I have learned who and who not to make scrapbooks for as gifts. My husband is the oldest of five and there are 20 Grandchildren and 11 great Gchildren. So one year I got pictures of every family and made s besutiful album for her. I've never seen it since and will never make her another one! But on the other hand, I make my DS and his wife an album every year of their travels and they love them and keep them on their coffee table at all times. I have been making albums as gifts for years and MY MIL is the only one who has not appreciated it at all. My mother is in a nursing home and I have started making her calenders. She loves them and cant wait to turn to the next month!! |

Most of my scrapbooking was for other people. I actually posted about it. I was scratching my head why so many people had so many albums in less time that I've been scrapping. Then it came to me. I have made 12 albums for other people, 5 pre made without pictures, plus 2 years in the market selling. Living me with about 6 albums in my house. But everyone of my albums was greatly appreciated...That I know of.
I don't know if they ever look at them and honestly I don't care because I know no one would ever do the same for them. I know that they all were very grateful at the moment when they received it. |

I started scrapbooking by making my mum an album for her 70th birthday, I always know when a relative or friend has visited as someone always tells me mum showed them this album and the several mini books I have made since - so I know they are loved and appreciated. My son on the other hand told me to never do an album for him as he does not want my version of his life!!! Consider me told - he always though looks at the pages I have made and I see him doing the kid count of how many pages with him and how many of the others LOL

I've made jewelry for my mom and while she does wear it, I think she's wearing it just because I made it for her.
You know, like when you were a kid and someone got you a sweater you hated and when you went to their house you had to wear it "so Aunt Mabel would see it on you and know you liked it."

I somehow finally accepted that once a gift leaves my hands it isn't up to me what happens to it. If I saw it in the trash I would eat those words but I do what I love and what I think the recipient will like and then it is no longer mine.
Honestly that has saved me a LOT of hurt feelings. I have to remember I don't love and use all the gifts given to me but I love the givers and the thought YKWIM?
Now if I could apply that philosophy to other parts of my life! |
