... a scraplifted sketch? Do you design a sketch before starting? Or do you wing your layout??

Please share your design/planning process

I BS my way through the entire thing.

No, really, I do. Grab some paper, grab some photos, cut and paste until it looks decent. That's it. Takes me about 30 min to do a page.

That is also what I do. I don't have a process; I just play with my paper and embellishments until I get a look I like. I very, very rarely scrap with a "plan".

I'm not as quick though; I take between 45-90 minutes per page, depending on how creative and technique-y I'm feeling.

Sometimes I use a LO I've seen before as a guide but even then I end up changing a thing or two. I rarely copy exactly how the other LO was done.

More often than not I get my pictures out, pull the paper I want and then go through my embellishments to find what I think I want to use. Then I'll lay the stuff out and mess around with it until I like it.

So I'm more of a scrap on the spot kinda girl!

I don't make sketches but sometimes I'll have an idea in my head of how I want something to look.

I mostly just take my lead from one thing that inspires me. Maybe a photo, a paper or embellishment. I pull things out and play and move them around till I like what I see. Occasionally, I might scraplift a LO but by the time I am finished it as more my own.

I seem to struggle with getting started. It always takes an act of inspiration and seeing something else to get the wheels turning. Once I have that little push, I can take the lead and make it my own.

Add me to those who wing it! I've never been able to use a sketch. I just don't think that way. I start with the photos and get color inspiration and ideas from there.

Lately, I have just been winging it based on what I have been seeing collectively online. Although, once in a while, I'll see something that I just love and do a complete scrap lift (different papers but very much a copy of the original).

I almost always start with my pictures. If I have a paper that I love and want to use, then I might go to the manufacturer's blog to get ideas on how they used that particular line of paper. I always look at sketches and say I am going to try one, but for some reason, I struggle with using them.

I am a sketcher. I either make my own sketch, or lay out my templates on my cuttting mat. I can't do a layout without doing either of those things.

Example of how I design a layout.

I just play. Occasionally, I have seen a layout on line or in a mag. that I really likes and I sort of keep some aspect of it in my head as I am working, but I never keep it next to me and I never try to copy exactly.

I sometimes start with a sketch but it's very unusual for me. I'm such a visual person that I have a tendency to find sketches too literal and therefore limiting - I have a hard time taking just the essence and turning it into something of my own and instead end up doing direct copies (which can be okay but not always what I want).

So 95% of the time, I just wing it. I always hear Shimelle's voice in my head: "There is no fear in scrapbooking." and "You'll make it work." Words to scrap by and so far, she's 10 for 10.

I start with photos, then hunt down a visual design I like.

Could be a sketch, a LO in the 2P Gallery, an ad in a mag, a web page, page in children's book. Anything, really. (I do the Calendar Girls challenges here on 2Ps, that is often a big part of my process.)

I used to feel that using someone else's design was "cheating." Then I realized that I am not trying to win a Kandinsky and the goal is to finish pages and have the memory preserved.

What used to take days not takes an hour or two and I love this hobby even more. Whatever process you find that works--use it!

bluna, I'm with you, girl!

I do have some of Allison's sketches and use them as a reference, and often peruse magazines or online galleries for inspiration, but I rarely ever copy something directly. I do get lots of inspiration and starting points though.

slyn11, I have never seen that type of template. Can you tell me more about them?

95% of the time, I wing it. Sometimes I design my own sketch and on rare occasions I use a sketch by someone else or create a sketch based on someone else's page design.

But that's the current me. Up to a couple of years I did a lot of scrap lifting. That was before I really started sharing my work online, applying to design teams, etc.

Most of the time I wing it. I have only truly scraplifted once. Loved the finished layout but even that had my own twist to it. Usually I just grab photos, paper and embellishments as I go.

I am fairly new to scrapping, but I start with my photos, choose a base paper from there and design around the photos. I haven't used a sketch before. Following helpful design info from Shimelle and that's about it.

Thanks for all the replies ladies! keep them coming!
Lately i have been using alot of sketches ive found online. Most of the time i feel guilty, as some of the other peas have mentioned, that its not really my design even if i dont copy it exactly. But I have a 16 month old daughter and rarely get time to scrap. So when i do, i really have to make it count. And with the sketches i can whip thru alot more layouts because i dont have to sit and think forever about how i want it to look. I'm just so far behind that im trying to find the quickest way to catch up. I wish i had the time to design them on my own. Maybe one day it will happen for me again .. I do love hearing everyones process. I also would love to hear more about those templates in the picture! I have never seen those either.

I am addicted to sketches, but they are a starting point, so the finished page might not resemble the sketch that closely.

I almost always start with a sketch. But as so many others have said, the sketch is just the starting point. Almost always the finished project barely resembles the sketch I started with because once I get started, stuff gets moved around or added or removed... The sketch is just the basic start to the layout for me.

I do a little bit of all of that. When I feel my mojo lacking I often turn to sketches to jump start my creativity; if I see something in a magazine or online that I like I often bookmark it. And every once in a while I actually come up with an original idea.

Most of the time I start with a sketch from the binder I keep. Some are my own. Sometimes one won't work when I have too many pics and I have to play around where to fit pics or I see if a colorblocking template will work.

It doesn't matter what I start with, even if I pretty much have it figured out, it still takes me for-ev-er to do a LO nearly every time. And they're not complicated LO's at all.

I either scraplift, or use a sketch to start. Once the creative mojo finishes with those, I'm usually crafty enough to come up with my own.

Helps to have a starting point.

I tend to start the weekend with a sketch challenge, which gets me going. Then I may use additional sketches or wing it but I never create my own sketches. Using sketches, as others have said, is a starting point & my layouts typically look different when I am done with them. I have gotten to the point where I am not pressuring myself to get caught up & just enjoy the process.

From the thread title, I was thinking:
...chocolate? Yes!
...coffee? Yes!
...music? Yes!
...children underfoot? Well, sometimes, though it's not preferable.

To answer what you ACTUALLY asked:
Yes, I use sketches 95% of the time. Sometimes I just eyeball it, but often I use one of the CTMH books, where they give you exact cutting guides.

I gather my pictures, find some papers and embellishments, then find a sketch that makes it all work.

It takes me HOURs to do a layout. I knocked out a simple card today - took me an hour and a quarter. Ah, well. I do this for fun.

Ditto! 99.5% are sketches from Allison Davis and Scrapbook Generation. I do like the sketches from Basic Grey as well but don't use them too often.

I am just not a creative person. Without sketches I sit there for hours pushing paper and pictures around and feeling lost.

I don't always use sketch exactly as it was designed; sometimes it's just a starting point. But, I have to admit I am perfectly happy with creating layouts exactly as the sketch is designed.

I don't feel at all as if I am cheating. It's no different than using a recipe instead of winging it in the kitchen.

Add me to the list of those that love sketches.
I like to look for a sketch that inspires me. Then I decide what photos I want to use and let the sketch inspire me for photo placement. I suppose some might think that that is a backwards way to work a sketch, but it works for me.

I used to. I use sketch inspiration a lot too. But the more I stick to the products I love I work better and faster. I'm only looking to the scrapper's blogs that resemble my style for inspiration. it's getting easier to start and finish a page.
Don't give me wrong I do look at the gallery and other places.but I don't do it when I'm stuck or with a specific project in mind. When I do that is what overwhelms me and..."here come the scraping block....".

I don't use sketches, although on rare occasions I will scraplift layouts shown at the LSS. Even then, though, I tend to alter it.

When creating a layout, I start with the photos I want to use, and have two plain 12x12 pieces of cardstock. I figure out how I want to place my photos, and THEN decide on paper and embellishments. I wing it from there.

I started scrapping long before there were sketches, and I used to teach layout design classes at the LSS, so I just prefer designing my own pages.

Usually I draw a bit of a sketch, then start. I rarely end up with anything like the sketch, as things tend to evolve as I go along. The sketch is just a starting place.

Just checked out Kiwi Lane Designs. I love their style!

I almost always start with a sketch. That helps me pick the photos and decide what size to print. I make notes on the sketch about what photo goes where, and for journaling, paper, embellishments, etc.

When I get the photos, I put then in front of the sketch in a 2 pocket folder to stay organized. If I have specific paper in mind, I make a kit.

It is so much easier for me to scrap when I have a 'recipe' to use as a starting point.

I wing it until I become uninspired...then I do PL for a bit... Then when I'm bored again, I'll flip through sketches and pick one to do. I'm a very easygoing scrapper.

I loved Shimelle's perfect collection class because that is what I basically do...scrap with paper boxes and go back and add embellishment clusters. Works for me.
