|Posted: 12/8/2012 5:17:49 PM|We are going to start a major renovation project in January. Pretty much every room will be affected, some more than others. My scrap stuff is now a corner of the family room, which will be gutted, and I also have stuff in the laundry room closet. They are telling us five months, but I am sure it will take six (doesn't it always take longer? ) and then of course it will take a while to unpack.
So the bad news is that I have to condense down to a small stash to work out of in little corners of the house when I can (and hopefully some crops). My guess is that I won't have a ton of time to scrap because we will be constantly moving from one area of the house to the other as they do work. On the other hand, I will have to spend lots of time out of the house, and my LSS is a good place to hang out and get things done The good news is that when it is all done, I get to turn the guest room into my studio.
I am both a traditional scrapbooker and an avid art journaler, so I have a ton of supplies for both. How do I even begin to decide what to pack and what to keep out for that long chunk of time. What do I even keep it all in? The only thing I have figured out so far is to pack up my completed albums that are laying around on display (some of them are on a shelf upstairs, and that area won't have much work done) and to also pack up all my completed minis which were in baskets on the coffee table and on my scrap desk.
LOL, good thing I went to the hardware store with dh. He picked out a ten gallon plastic tote for me to use. I picked out a 45 gallon tote on wheels Guess which one I came home with? I also bought a ton of iris boxes at M's and a bunch of smaller plastic boxes both for packing away and for packing in the tote---things like open paints don't belong in cardboard. I figure when this is all over, I can use the containers easily in my new scrap room closet.

I had to pack my scrap stuff 3 months before we put the house up for sale and I knew if would be packed for at least a year before being unpacked at the new house. What I did was pack my wheeled tote (have the CIS XXL) with all my basic tools - paper cutter, scissors, some basic punches, basic inks, different types of adhesives, small selection of brads and eyelets,pens, etc. then i gathered all the stuff i needed for a project I was working on ( Disney album). I also tossed in some page kits including photos for them that I had aleady put together.
It worked out really well. I was able to scrap when I had a chance and even went to a weekend crop. It made unpacking a bit easier too because I unpacked the tote first in my new scrap area and was able to take my tome unpacking everything else and still was able to scrap.

You could try to make several kits up to have ready. In each kit, you could have everything you need for each project including stamps and embellies. That's gonna be tough having to pack everything up but once the renovations done, you'll have an awesome studio!

Having to put things away bites for the short-term but think of what your house is going to look like in the end.
Art journaling is going to be the tough one. I am an AJ'r too and use MANY supplies. I can't begin to imagine trying to keep all my AJ supplies available through that kind of chaos.
For the scrapbooking side, I would pick one small to medium sized project to work on (like a Smash album) and stick with that. Use a single paper collection and that's it. What I am afraid of, and what you aluded to in your post, is that you may not have the time to scrapbook during the remodel.
Would you consider putting art journaling on hiatus for six months? If that is something you don't want to do maybe start a project that combines scrapbooking with AJ-ing by using 4x6 cards as your AJ "canvas" and put them in a scrapbook in a Project Life type layout. You can challenge yourself to use five to seven supplies that are small and can transport easy but will still allow you to "escape" during the remodel.
I really hope you find something that works.

It sounds like a huge undertaking. Could you make up page kits in advance of having to pack? That way you would have everything you need to do your layouts in one location and still be able to pack up your supplies.
You could always add any finishing touches after all of the renovations are done.

my suggestion is large clear plastic storage boxes and pack like things together in smaller boxes in case you need to find somthing also put a written list on top of each large box this is how i pack each time we move works pretty well.
as for what to keep out gather things up as if you were going to a crop tools adhesive, your cant live without items then you can also pull items as you pack that spark an idea you should be good then....if you have access to you big boxes you can always pull one to get more things...

I art journal sometimes in a very painty/inky/messy way, but sometimes also in a more collagey way. I was thinking of investing in some mini bottles of claudine hellmuth paint, and use my watercolor crayons and a small watercolor set, and pack up all my bigger paints. Maybe I could keep out a few bottles of favorite sprays, and pack the rest away.
Page kits is also a good idea. I do have a tote, but I can't imagine getting it all down so it fits in a tote. I'm thinking some iris cases too, that I can move around as they are working in different areas--one with paper, one with stamps and embellishments??? Do you think that would work?
I packed up several boxes today with less used stamps, some less used embellishments, and all my completed minis and art journals. Somehow, my desk doesn't look much different except that my printers trays that were hanging over the desk are down. This is going to be a huge job (to say nothing of packing up my kitchen, dining room, clothes, ds's toys and books, etc. )
Oy. It is going to be tough to keep my eyes on the prize at the end.

When you used it all up.. buy another collection. That way you never have too much out at one time. It could literally fit in an iris box or a Ziplock type bag. You can print photos as you need them or do a bulk printing before hand.
Not sure how you store your scraps but if they are portable I might keep those out as well. Since you have a LSS you can always supplement by project if needed.
I think the time will pass quickly and maybe at some point in the project you will have alittle more room to work with and can pull out more.

LOL Janelle. Nope, not for me. I got into scrapping and art journaling (and book binding) because I love the feel of paper. But I know it is great for some people.

Iris boxes will be your friend for stamps, inks and smaller items.
I found some sterlite storage totes to put paper in that are the perfect size. (not at walmart) and I used one of those for paper as I moved around the house while the ceilings, walls and floors were re-done.
I also had a couple of small storage containers with handles that I put liquids and sprays in.
I used foam poster board, a mat and disposable cutting mats (from dollar tree) to cover whatever I used as a work surface.
For mixing and pouring I used foam or paper plates (paper bends to pour glitter, etc back into a jar).
Not that I had much time for projects with all the moving and clean up.

How exciting (and stressful)! My stuff has been packed up in our garage (which is insulated) since this past January when dd and dgs came to live with us. We made sure to pack like things together so I wouldn't have to guess where something is, packed them in those large rubbermaid containers which have lids that click on and bankers boxes with lids and labeled them on the outside with note cards. Then we arranged all the containers stacked two or three high and made aisles, so when I need to look for something I could find it. I have my XXL always packed with the basics; trimmer, adhesives, etc. Plus I have a few iris carts with my stamps, etc. You are lucky you have an alternative location to go to to crop.
Life isn't so much about where we've been, as who we've been there with ~ Unknown

I art journal and have a room full of paints and supplies. To be honest, I could easily toss all but some basic things that I keep in a canvas tote bag.
I have a 9x12 block of 140 lb hot press (smooth surface) watercolor paper in bright white, fiskars microtip scissors, my much loved full sets of neocolor watercolor crayons and pencils, a few waterbrushes, 2 larger sable brushes, small heart and star punches, sharpie markers and glitter pens. In a big ziplock is PVA glue, foam brushes, a couple of small flip top bottles of white and red plus jars of gold and silver Golden's acrylics, and a bottle of diamond stickles. In another ziplock are a handful of small stamps and black and brown Stazon ink. I cut images from magazines before I recycle them. Images go in a thin folder.
It sounds like a lot but the tote is smaller than a reusable grocery bag. There is plenty of room for everything I need when I'm feeling creative. It doesn't take up space, and it's portable enough to take to Starbucks when I want to get out of the house.
I haven't posted in the gallery in a long time, but have some older AJ pages if you want to see some made with a limited amount of supplies.

I would also suggest making up a good number of page kits and putting them in another wheeled cart or a tub.
Also,your car/SUV might be a good storage space.

So I don't want to be a big naysayer, but I have never heard of a major remodel job being done on time. Ever. So I would plan on a few more months.
Are you able to utilize under the bed space? I would put key tools there and make a ton of page kits and hope for the best.

I used to meet a friend at Peets every week to art journal, and we were able to get a lot done at a small table with minimal materials, so I need to try to get back to that.

OK, I am packing and it is not fun at all. I am kind of horrified at how much stuff I am packing up (seven boxes so far and I have barely made a dent) and how much I want to keep out.
I am sending dh out to buy me a big plastic bin with lid, and everything I am keeping access to in the house will have to fit in that (except for my wheeled tote which I will pack with tools and use to pack page kits in when I go out). I am headed to M's to buy some more iris cases which I will use inside the bin to store things in--one for stamps and inks, one for paper, one for embellishments, etc. If it doesn't fit in that bin or in the tote, it has to be packed away. I figure I can use the top of the bin as a sort of desk, and just push it from room to room as we have to move around the house.
