I saw a layout on Pinterest and everything on it was perfectly centered. I liked it but it made me realize that I'm an off center scrapper. From the looks of my layouts I tend to divide the page into thirds, although I don't consciously do it.
So...centered or rule of thirds?

I think I tend to me more a centered person.

|Posted: 12/27/2012 1:25:43 PM|I don't center things right in the middle of the page - if it's in the middle left to right, it's not in the middle top to bottom (if that makes sense). Of course, that's on the few pages I make that aren't so packed with photos that it doesn't really make a difference.

I just strive to make my LO look balanced, so it depends on what else I have going on. Looking back at gallery though I think I usually like the photo to be off-center. Additionally, if i only have one photo I'll often angle it slightly instead of making it perfectly straight on the page.

I do both. Whatever works for the layout I'm doing.

I do a little of both.

I always seem to create things off-centre, but I love the look of centred layouts. I have to MAKE myself do it, sometimes!

I realized I follow the picture rule where you don't center the subject. I dont think I do it on purpose.
|Posted: 12/27/2012 4:10:38 PM|Usually rule of thirds for me, although not on purpose, I just prefer the off centre look. My 'thing' is about distance, like if it's a layout where I want the photo straight on the page instead of randomly at an angle, I will measure to make sure the top and bottom corners are the same distance in from the edge of the page. I know - it's painful isn't it, but I've always been like that and just can't help it. I'm not OCD in general, but it just has to be straight.

It depends upon my mood at the time. I seem to fight with myself on which way to go.

I generally end up centering things. I like the off-centered look, just haven't figured out how to do it successfully.

I do both but I never like to have things perfectly placed. I am not a get-out-the-ruler and measure kind of person so I keep everything slightly off kilter.

I prefer off centered, just like when I take pictures.

I don't pay a lot of attention to that since I use sketches, but I would say usually there is a focal point photo that is off center, and the rest of the page evolves from there. Or the photos are placed off center on one side, if I am using a sketch calling for two 4x6 or three 4x6.

I think is goes with the rules of thirds in photography. You are always told that you avoid the center. The pictures loose its interest when the subject is centered. It's a principal used in almost all art forms. Notice in the movies when you have a dialogue and the camera is pointing at the people is always of centered. You will see a little bit of the other person in the conversation or a specific part of the face in the persons conversation. Never the whole face right in the middle.
All the principles of scrapbooking came from awesome people that already new a thing or 2 about design. We might not think about it but is what makes us not like certain layouts. Most of the time those layouts we don't like have things that break the rules, the rules are not followed correctly or are just pure chaos.
Now don't give me wrong, sometime chaos can also create the most beautiful things.
