What do I need to be able to cut svg files and fonts from my computer? I do not want to be limited by cricut cartridges. Do I buy a cricut or a silhouette and what other software do I need?

Unless you previously bought and registered SCAL or MTC software before the Provo Craft lawsuits against them, you can't cut svg files or computer fonts with Cricut.
Get a Silhouette.

Another option is the Sizzix Eclips. I had both the Silhouette Cameo and the Eclips, and I preferred the Eclips.

If you go to the Sure cuts a lot or Make the cut sites you can see which machines they work with.
I personally use a Sizzix eClips with the eCal (SCAL for eClips) and am happy. Just depends on what you are looking for.
Yes, I can spell. No, my Kindle can't.
Just my humble opinion. And no, I wasn't being mean.

Pazzles also has a subscription library full of over 3000+ images that are downloadable in the Pazzles software file format. I'm playing with mine right now and you will love having an electronic die cutting machine. I can make most of the embellishments I used to buy!

I also don't really enjoy HAVING to use a computer when I scrap. I have SCAL for my Cricut E now, and I hardly use it. Don't know why. I have a laptop, so it's not a big deal to hook it up. That's just not how I roll when I am in the scrappy zone.
