This was before my time, but I saw some you mention photorealistic papers, like close-ups of macaroni, for example. And you all regretted them. lol

So in the CHA sneaks I saw quite a bunch of those. Maggie Holmes has a brick wall and wooden floor. Allison Kreft has a box of pastel crayons. I saw others too, but can't remember now. Is this trend back? How do you feel about it?

I've notice that with pastels and misted looking papers. I remember buying a ProvoCraft Slab many years ago with that same kind of look.

That paper with the pastel crayons!
It was love at first sight! I instantly swore to get at *least* 5 sheets of it. lol! I think it's my favorite paper from CHA-W.
It is THE paper! I don't care so much for all the other stuff from CHA-W but I think I just found my 'must have'!

I never used any of that photo-realistic paper (they still do have some obnoxious designs of it, by the way- DCWV??) but for some reason, this time around, the designs seem less cheesy to me... less 'harsh' or 'less contrast' to the colors in the designs, maybe?? Not sure what's different about them, exactly.

I had to go hunting for the Alison Kreft paper with the oil pastels / crayons since someone mentioned it, and I gotta say, that really is is cute paper- I could see using it as a page border or accent, for sure. I think that one, specifically, is nice because it's pastel colors- if it was bright, primary colors then it would fall into the 'obnoxious' category. (that's my 2 cents, anyway.)

I love them. Everytime HL, J'd or M's gets a new paper pad I grab it! I love using them! I love the nature ones the best!

Right now I have only used the sky ones and the woodgrains. I have to see the others used in an appealing way before I jump on that bandwagon!

I've used the sky ones before, and some that have a more subtle pattern. Cork, basket weave, sand, grass... I don't mind those at all, and have used them. There are a few I would never use, because they seem "obnoxious", as some previous posters mentioned. But if done right, they can be nice.

All those wood papers from the past few years--the planks and parquet--I could never buy or use them because they were photorealistic and I still can't get over that being old school tacky.

I didn't consider the sky and wood grain like the photo realistic from the past. I think we just relate those papers to the lack of design options we had in general back then. I loved the Midway collection from midway but I promise you I won't use the photorealistic sides of them. Just not me. But if you look at the different things done with them they are quite nice enough no one noticed they were photorealistic.

I have used many of the beach photo papers and love them. I've found that many of my vacation photos can blend right into them. Great effect. I've used a few others, but mainly just the beach ones.

I think they could be cool used as accents, or with little snippets of them on a page. I don't think I Will ever be convinced by the full page photo background, it just isn't my style. Plus I only go to the beach in the winter when it's cold and grey, so my photos would never match the paper.

IDK, but if I have to struggle that much to make myself use a paper, it's not for me. I was never able to do anything with them that looked "right", but then I haven't seen the new styles of it either. Time will tell I guess!

Macaroni paper would remind me too much of my kindergarden craft period, and my style has evolved so much since then

Not really my thing, although I like some of the wood grains... On the right LO I could see using my Silhouette to cut a title out of one of the papers, sort of like the way papers with font/writing is then cut into a title... I think pencils/pastels would look good cut into a title for an art or school page...

I find that if I want. Photorealistic paper I'll make one myself with a scan of something or and actual photo printed 12x12 or 8x8. I don't prefer to purchase those

I like how the woodgrain has been getting more and more realistic, and I have use the sky papers, linen, denim and cork papers, so I think I can use the crayons and brick wall. I just hope it doesn't go to the extreme of food close-ups and nature scenes. IMO that would be too much.

I think I actually HAD the pizza paper. I just used DCWV primary color bottles for a page and it turned out quite good. Now, I didn't use the whole page, just bits and pieces which is what I think you need to do. I did use the whole piece that had a box of chocolates for another page. Sometimes you just never know when it will come in handy.

I just used a piece yesterday! I think I bought it 12 yrs ago, one of my first ever paper purchases.
It was red rosebuds and I used the first piece 10 yrs ago for a friends wedding card. Yesterday I made a layout using a card that had roses on it so I used the paper behind a pocket that was filled with journalling.

I am not really a big fan of it but have used several of the beach/sunset type pages for title pages in holiday albums.

Oh and once upon a time I was holidaying in a coastal town and found a tiny scrapbooking shop (someone's front living room!)There was a group of older ladies making cards while I shopped and I was too embarrassed to leave without buying anything so I bought some buttons and some photo realistic strawberry paper. My grandson had just eaten a huge strawberries and cream dessert down by the beach so I used small pieces of this paper on the layout!
Wait, if I've used it 3 or 4 times does that make me a fan??

I think the papers now are better than the older ones, but I don't think I'll be using them on my pages. If I have to force myself to think of ways to use a product then it probably isn't for me!

I do wish the 12" by 12" transparency trend would come back though. I have a page idea I want to use one for, but I have yet to find one that would work. Two or three years ago I probably wouldn't have been able to narrow it down between five or six options.

If you're talking about the kind where the entire page is a close up of macaroni or bricks, then I like them when I cut them up and use them as photo mats or journal mats or for sections of background (I tend to do a lot of layering in my layouts).

I've used some papers in their original size, however. I used the sky paper for my layouts on going to a hot air balloon show and the sea paper for my Sea World lay outs. I also used a paper with white roses on it for my lay out about my wedding bouquet which was white roses.

I'm really not comfortable with labeling anyone else's choices as cheesy or tacky.

old school tacky.

Yikes! I really love using these papers and I never thought of the layouts I do on them as 'old school tacky.'

Different strokes I guess, but I know my layouts look really nice with those papers. In fact, I will be using some tomorrow when I start scrapping my cruise pics. And they will look great!
