I was looking through pics documenting what I wanted to scrap and I have 82 layouts to do... I like being about a month out but not scrapping for a few years means I'm playing catch up.
What do you consider being caught up or do you just scrapbook what you feel like, when you feel like it? |

I will never be "caught up". I dont look at it that way because it puts too much pressure on me and then I dont enjoy scrapbooking.

I am caught up and to me, that means no event unscrapped more than 6 weeks. It does not mean every photo is scrapped. I might take 100 photos that are worth of being printed at a birthday party. Of those, I will select around 20 to actually print and then use around 18 of them. But the event is scrapped and in the album. If I were doing a birthday for one son I would make perhaps 3 or 4 double page layouts in his album, one double page in the album of his brother and the family album. When the boys grow up and move away I don't want the album of them to be as if they were an only child, I want to highlight the events of our family with them as the 'star' of their own album.
If I get more than 6 weeks out, I consider myself behind. |

Caught up? What does it mean?
It's unrealistic for me to aim to be caught up. I am happy to document things here and there. Although I am aiming to stay caught up with Project Life now. For me it just means that the memories get scrapped eventually, it doesn't have to happen within a certain period of time. |

I think of being caught up as scrapping pics of events or happenings from a week or two ago. Right now I'm working on the last few 2010 pics and I'll be moving on to 2011 pics in the next week or so.
I also took a long break from scrapping. It lasted about 3-4 years. So now I'm working on getting caught up. I'm one of those peas that does like to be caught up. My memories are fresh and and I enjoy scrapping more when I'm working with recent pics. But that's not to say that I'm not enjoying my scrapping now - I do - but my goal is to be caught up. |

Not scrapping for eight months once forced me to change that definition.
When I first started scrapbooking, I had three tracks going - two chronological, and one more or less so. The straight chrono was our recent photos, which at the time I started scrapbooking, I was about 18 months behind on, because I elected to"start" with my wedding to DH that much before that. I got caught up on those, and have stayed relatively caught up on them.
I also started with my oldest other photos - from the 1970s, and worked my way forward with them. Two years later, I was up to 1994 with those, working through lots and lots of photos from a trip to the Grand Canyon that year and trying to figure out fresh ways to scrap them. Then life got in the way, and I had to take that eight-month break.
DH did not have his older photos in order. I tried to put them in order, but we kept finding more. So I had done one book from a cross-country trip he took with the kids, and was working on one from when they were in elementary school (they are 30 and 32 now) when that eight-month break happened.
Afterwards, I decided I would not attempt to scrap the older photos in chronological order, just when I felt like doing so. I also gave myself permission to scrap my favorite more recent photo a second or even third time if it told a story I felt like telling. With that, I started focusing more on the creative process than the need to get "caught up." Because I don't think I ever would have with DH's old photos anyhow.
What that means now is that some photos are purely creative. I keep these in "challenge" albums, separate from those I keep to record memories. That's because these ideas almost always come from challenges here at Two Peas or other websites.
Other layouts use my older, or even my recent photos, but the decision to scrap them started with an idea, not the photos themselves. And still other recent photos start with a "need" to scrap them because I've come to that place in the order. Even in those cases, I feel I end up with more creative pages than if I had focused only in doing pages in order.
Since I do try to do my recent photos in chronological order, I am not that caught up at the moment. I have a lot of photos from December, and now one from January, that still need to be scrapped. Given that most of the December photos I still have left will also need to be in my grandkids' books, I have to scrap those layouts two or three times before I feel caught up.
But today, I'm not going to worry about it. I'm going to take a photo from 2007 and use two of the Garden Girl challenges to illustrate how I feel my life is in 2013. It will be going in the challenge album.
Those December photos will have to wait. I'll get to them soon. |

I'm happy if I'm scrapping photos taken within the last six months. I tend to switch around from keeping current in my annual albums to working on projects like family history, but like to keep that current stuff fairly, well, current! Doesn't bother me much to be "behind" but I know for me it's harder to journal, etc. the farther out I go! |

I think "caught up" to me would mean I was only about 2 months behind in my pictures. I'm typically only about a year behind but I didn't get as much scrappy done as I usually do last year so I'm still scrapping pictures from Summer 2011 right now. I've done some layouts for late 2011/2012 pictures since I sometimes jump around. Right now I'm trying to wrap up Summer 2011 so I can get started on our Summer 2011 vacation pictures. I'm not sweating it though. I just try to do what I can when I can. |

Lol. Well, my parents weren't huge picture takers when I was growing up, so there aren't many available for me to scrap from childhood (although one day I will go collect all the framed photos they have and have them reprinted for myself to scrap). I was also not a huge picture taker until I started scrapping, so not much to worry about there either (I don't have kids, so it's just me/friends/family/pets, a lot of random pictures.)
"Caught up" for me is caught up on PL and big events (like holidays). I am not caught up on either right now, for the record. I have Thanksgiving, Christmas, my mom's birthday, and two weeks of PL to do before that happens, and I don't even have the photos printed. Now, there aren't TONS of pictures, and I won't be doing TONS of layouts (maybe 6 full-page layouts and then usually a week of PL is two pages).
I scrap older photos randomly as I find them and feel like scrapping them. Usually, there is very little journaling with these older photos since I don't remember much about the time/event. I'm lucky if I can include a year and a list of who is in the photo, if more than one person is there!

For me caught up would mean being up to date with pictures in chronological order. This would leave room for other stories someone may want to tell that don't fall on the calendar such as a Book of Me type project or ongoing personality based albums.
eta...I can't see this ever pertaining to my scrapbooking situation. I have loads of event pictures to work on plus I have my mother's albums from when I was little and my own pictures from when I was in my teens and 20s.

I do not think that I will ever be "caught up" and I am completely OK with that! My hubby gives me a hard time occasionally when he looks through my albums asking why I am not done with a particular year.. I just remind him that I do not scrapbook in order (though I do put them in albums in order) and that I will get to it when I get to it!
I was really stressed about the whole idea of catching up when I had an epiphany. I am not scrapbooking for my kids, or future generations. I am doing it for me. I love crafting. Yes of course I hope that my albums will have some place in my daughter's lives when I am gone, and that future generations can enjoy them, but that is no longer my focus. When I thought like that it took the fun out of scrapbooking.

For me, "caught up" doesn't mean scrapping every single picture I have. It means getting all the priority memories recorded. For example, I don't really feel the need to go back and scrap my childhood/high school/college years. But there are quite a few memories of the last 8-years of married life that have never gone into albums. For me, I would be "caught up" if I got through all those to the present. My priority in scrapbooking is memory-keeping (the "pretty" is just a bonus ), so I am afraid that the longer things go unscrapped, the higher likelihood that the memories will be "lost".
My goal for this year is getting "caught up". I am going the PL-style route with kits and divided page protectors. So far, it is allowing me to scrap much faster. I also love that I can insert traditional layouts as I want.

Something that will be very hard to attain.
I'm a chrono scrapper that scraps all her pics. And I'm only in 2002 with a mountain to go.... that's just the kids' albums which have been my focus. I need to start working on my wedding album again simultaneously and the anniversary pics. Actually, I'm thinking I need to work on the anniversary ones first to try and get caught up on those.

What ScrappyJac said^^. I am at Christmas 2012 right now, so I consider myself "caught up". I started scrapping in 2004 when my daughter was born. I have no desire to go backwards from there. From 2004 to present, I have all major memories and events recorded. Any leftover pics go in 4x6 pockets in the back of the book |

This is me EXACTLY. It would mean the next "event" I attended/photographed could immediately be scrapped, with no other prior "event" un-scrapped. If this happened, I feel like I would give myself more permission to just play and experiment with supplies, so I strive to be "caught up" one day. I'm too obsessive compulsive to not scrap chronologically. |

I started scrapbooking when my oldest grandson was born -then Hurricane Katrina hit and we lost everything, including pictures. It took me over 2 years to get my home back together and be able to afford to replace all that I lost.
Considering I have none of my children's lives scrapped (and all the pics i could salvage have to have extensive photoshopping done before i could/can scrap them) and huge gaps in my now 5 grand children's lives I know I will never be "caught up" but I'll darn sure enjoy the journey.
And the next time a storm heads my way the first thing I'll pack are my albums, pics and EHDs!

I consider myself more or less caught up. I don't scrap every picture or every event. I just hit the highlights or whatever I feel like doing. If I don't feel like doing an event, I don't.
I consider myself caught up if I am 2-3 months behind on scrapping current stuff. I just finished the last event of November. Most of my Christmas is scrapped with maybe 2-4 LOs left for December.
For my kids, I consider their books caught up if I am working on LOs within a year. If they are in an activity, I do summary pages. I finished most of my oldest's books before her graduation. I have 2-3 LOs left in her book - already did her graduation - mostly have her ice shows left and her last orchestra concert. Prom is done. I have a few pages in my other DD's book to do. She graduates this year but she isn't involved in as much as her sister so the pages I create for her and her interests are totally different - more personality driven.
As you can see I jump around. I usually get inspired by the photos and recent events. I usually work on the most current thing first and work my way backwards. I don't really have anything before 1998 when I started scrapping except a My Life Birth - 2000 that hits the highlights. |

I put photos in these divided plastic sleeves in chronological order - especially those that were printed before digital. Those are in addition to any pages that are scrapped, but it's easy enough to just mix layouts in with them as they are completed.
I love Shimelle's videos. They really do shake up old perspectives and give you permission to do something different.

To me being caught up would mean I have nothing to scrap that everything is scrapped and documented. This will never happen and I don't want it to. I would love to be able to say that I was done with a certain year though but I don't work chronologically so that may never happen unless I really work at it. |

I'm a chrono scrapper, and I've been doing this since 2001. I have no plans to go back and scrap anything before then, so I would consider myself "caught up" if I had scrapped everything from 2001 to about the last month.
The closest I ever got was the fall of 2011, when I was only 5 months behind and on a roll. But then I got sick (like, bedridden, IVs, home-health nurses sick) and had a baby, so I'm still stuck in Sept 2011.
But sloooooowly working my way out! I'll continue to be slow with 2 little ones underfoot!

I have a sign that says, "Don't try to catch up, it means there are no more memories to be documented."
82 (now 81) layouts is about 6 months behind for me and I do feel like things get lost in translation when I wait too long.
Once I get to about 4 weeks out, I will do an album for each child's childhood to have because I realized there is no way they are getting my albums unless I'm dead. |

I'm not "caught up," and I'm not sure that I'd actually want to be. I'd be so bored!
BUT, I do like being within a month or two of my kids' current pictures. (I'm not. But I *like* to be. ) I guess I'd call that "on track." I remember the big stories and the little things so much better that way, and I prefer being able to write detailed journaling (as opposed to generic, we went to this park and had fun). That is easier the more "on track" I am.
In addition to each of my kids' albums and our family albums, though, I've started scrapping old pictures of myself and my family. I have no real timeline on that stuff because I'm not trying to do any sort of chronological thing with them. For that book, I'm using old favorite photos to illustrate various memories of my childhood and growing up years. I don't have any particular agenda or plan for it, so I'd only be "caught up" if I ran out of memories. |

For me, the only "caught up" I strive for is keeping current with printing pictures. I shoot for printing every month or so, whenever there's a good sale. I'd much rather have lots of pictures printed - even if from previous years - so I have lots to choose from when I want to scrap!
To each their own, though! |

I started scrapping when my oldest was 25 and he will be 31...and I have three others...so...I am guessing the 12th of NEVER I will be caught up and I don't mind. I enjoy taking my time and scrapping at my leisure...if I put pressure on myself I don't enjoy it.
The only thing I scrap regularly is Christmas...I attend a retreat right MLK weekend each year and scrap my Christmas album during the retreat....
its fun to relieve the memories so soon after and no pressure on myself... | |

I am not caught up in any definition of the term. I am caught up for the years 2001-2009, but I have tons left to do in 2010, and only a few layouts done for 2011 or 2012.

I am no where near caught up. But I think that is good in a way. You'll always have something to scrapbook when you want. You can jump around between present day and the past things you need to scrap. I was thinking about scrapbooking a picture from when I was 2 or 3 and I'm 16 now. My mom never documented that particular picture and I think It needs to be done. My great Grandma gave me pictures of her son(my grandpa)when he was still young. He past away when I was like 6 or 7 and wasn't aloud to go to the funeral. Even to this day I'm upset about that and want to document it and hopefully it will let me cope with saying goodbye. Sorry I got a little off topic there. But yea just scrapbook in the way that your most comfortable. Don't put pressure on yourself because your "behind". Chances are EVERY scrabooker is "behind". Just remember no pressure, and do it for enjoyment. In the end scrapbooking is what we love and having all of this pressure on getting caught up is eventually going to not make it enjoyable. Hope I helped you

To me, 6 months behind is caught up. I am not caught up at the moment.

"Caught up" is not even in my scrapbook vocabulary. (And yes, I do have a scrapbook vocabulary. )
It would be like saying, "Attention family! I'm caught up on all our laundry!!" Then 10 minutes later, someone would change their clothes and I'm screwed.
You can never be "caught up" in my opinion unless you are just done with scrapping. I know there are some crafty girls out there who pride themselves on keeping "caught up" but my brain can't even process that. I haven't made a layout since 2008! So this year, I'm getting back to scrapping and documenting our memories but I certainly won't worry about being caught up. I'm going to tackle my most important, "must-tell" stories first and put everything else in albums in divided photo pocket type protectors and call it done.

I don't do 'caught up'. I also don't scrap chronologically or have yearly albums, so you'd never know if I was 'behind' anyway. Part of that is I like the freedom of working on what calls to me, and part is because some years are super busy, and some years I have 5 photos. I never grooved with yearly albums. Doing it this way just makes everything a bit more balanced (for me).
If you were to look at my albums today, you'd see photos and stories that span from the 1940s to now. You'd get a taste of where we came from, who we are, what we do, and who/what is important to us.
Although I have lots of photos and stories that I still want document, I don't feel 'behind'. If I died tomorrow, my family would have albums that spanned their lifetimes and beyond, documenting the most important (and sometimes mundane) moments of their lives. And no one would ever say 'I wonder why she didn't scrap any photos from 2007?'. |

I don't even think about being caught up. I scrapbook the stories I want and the photos I want, that's my method. Sometimes I'll keep a small list of stories or layouts to scrapbook when I get ready to order pictures. But even then, there's no rhyme or reason just stuff that pops into my head. |

I just scrap what I want when I want. I do it for fun so just scrap bits and pieces not worrying about getting certain photos done. I will never be caught up. I have too many photos and not enough time or energy to scrap everything. Plus I enjoy regular photo albums too so I put majority of photos in those and then just scrap a few of my favourites. |
