i can't find an option to turn that off anywhere. when i cut off the border, it's making my PL wonky because the pics are all too small, slightly.

can anyone give me some ideas to try? it's an HP photosmart 5510, and getting another printer is not an option.

Are you printing direct from a card to the printer, or from your computer? I found this via a Google search:

Start For XP
Settings
Printers and faxes
Right click the printer icon, and select printer preferences
Select Paper/Quality tab
Scroll down to size is and select
Scroll down further to type is...
Here is where you can scroll to the gloss paper you use.
Place the photo paper to the far right, with the shiny side down.

Have printer on Windows 7
Start
HP Solution center
Click settings
Click printer settings
Click printer shortcuts tab
In left window, click photo printing either border less or with white borders
Click ok
Add photo paper all the way to the right, with glossy side down

Be sure to change settings back when done

I have the HP 7510, and there is a way to do it, but you have to drill down into the "advanced" menus (I print through Photoshop). About 3 levels down there is an option for "print w/border" which you can change to "print borderless". Unfortunately I have yet to figure a way to make that the default setting. Sorry I can't be of more help...have you tried contacting HP's help line?

What tinkgumby said is correct. You have to select the option for borderless printing. You can also do this in the Print Dialog Box that pops up before you commit to printing. I believe it's in the Preferences menu.
