I'd like to start doing some mini albums for birthdays and things, but I don't really know how to go about it! I have a bunch of cardstock cut to size, but I'm wondering how you go about doing the pages. Do you all use albums and page protectors? If not, how do you get the finished pages punched to put split rings through? Any tips and photos of finished mini-albums much appreciated!

I think how you start your mini really depends on size, how bulky the pages are going to be, how you want to bind it, etc.
I have sewn together mini albums that are thin and small. Just fold the papers over and stitch down the spin.
Most of my minis are either just pages punched and held together by binder rings, or have been adhered directly into an old novel. I don't use page protectors for either type.

I've always used pre-made albums for my minis (like the chipboard ones you can find pretty inexpensively), but I helped a friend make a 6" by 6" one. We just cut cardstock to size, punched a few holes down the side, and looped ribbon through the holes to hold it together. I don't have any photos, sorry! We punched the holes before she decorated the pages but didn't put the ribbon on to hold the pages together until she finished.
You could check the gallery here for ideas too, I have seen some very impressive minis made by Peas.

I have made a few minis...I love giving them as gifts, and the recipients always seem to enjoy them. I usually either use a pre-made mini from chipboard or cut my chipboard myself and cover with patterned paper. You can punch holes and use binder rings( found at office supply stores) or ribbon if you do a search on you-tube there are a ton of different binding ideas, also 2Peas gallery & Pinterest have some pretty awesome mini albums you can use for inspiration!! Just have fun with it!!

If you are just starting, I'd suggest you consider a pre-made album. Usually a package of chipboard that you can finish as you wish, but Little Yellow Bicycle commonly has a mini album kit with their new lines that is very easy to assemble. I think Bo Bunny often has a mini album kit. Once you get a "feel" for it, then you can branch out into folded paper (I still love the 8.5x11 folded mini), shaped chipboard, paper sacks and gift bags of all sizes, file folders, envelopes ... the list goes on and on and on .....

I have made many mini albums over the years, both premade and ones I have made by scratch.
YouTube is an excellent way to find different techniques.
I have a channel and have shown the finished mini's and also tutorials on different ones, or page ideas.
My channel is in my siggy,

There are many ways to go about making mini-albums; it's really all in how you want to do it. Mini albums come in a variety of colors and sizes with page protectors to match. That would be the easiest way. But if you want something more personalized and you enjoy hand-crafting, then I would suggest making your own mini. I've made a variety of minis using chipboard for covers. I've used the Bind It All to bind my albums. I've also used ribbon and rings for binding my albums.
An example of a ring-bound album is here.
I usually cut chipboard for my minis but I've also used the heavy chipboard by Zutter. Here is a sample of a homemade smashbook that I made using the Zutter chipboard covers and I used the Bind It All to bind the album.
This mini was made from a music-themed chipboard notebook that I had purchased some years ago because I liked it. I didn't know what to do with it until I'd decided to alter it into a mini-smashbook.
I've made other mini pocket albums where I used cardstock to bind the album. I thought I had the project in my gallery but I don't. I'm a bit behind in uploading projects.
I had gotten many of the ideas (i.e., chipboard binding and pocket minis) on YouTube. There is a wealth of tutorials there. Check them out. I'm sure you'll find something that will meet your needs.

I made my first mini album using my Silhouette Cameo. Do you have one? Best thing e.v.e.r. Anyway, I used a cut file from the Silhouette Online Store and made an acordian album that just glued together, no page protectors or anything. It was a fun mini and maybe this wil give you some inspiration as to where you want to go. Here's the link: Mini Album

I have always used pre-made albums. Some have page protectors, some are chipboard, etc. I have a Pinterest board dedicated solely to mini albums with lots of inspiration if you want to check it out (the link to my boards is in my signature). |

I created birthday mini albums for both of my boys using 2 up 4x6 photo albums. I posted about it here on 2peas and on my own site. Even if a photo album scrapbook isn't what your looking for perhaps it could give you a few ideas about the layout. Hope that helps! |
