I was wondering if you put together kits before you scrap and does it help you in scrapping? Do you pull out enough for several layouts or just enough for a single page?
Any hints on putting together your own scrapbooking kits? |

Shimelle is doing that on her blog...putting together a monthly kit and making it possible to buy things here at 2 peas or use your own stash. |

I do this if I am going to a crop that way I can only take what I need and to make sure I have everything I want prior to getting there to complete a layout.
If I am scrapping at home then I just wing it. | |

I pull a bunch of complimentary papers and embellishments, usually way more than I need, but it's usually just for one LO or PL spread. My desk has a little pull out thing for a keyboard, and I keep an organizer tray thing there where I put my embellishments, journaling spots, scraps, etc. that I want to use on that particular project. I leave them there, with the papers, until I finish the LO/spread/whatever and can put the stuff away. |

Hey,
I often make my own kits, particularly if I'm going to a crop or haven't got quite enough time to make a layout but want to get organised.
The first thing I do is pick some photos out that I'd like to use. Then I rummage through my patterned paper and pull out anything that might match up. Sometimes I take out more than I need, but I will cut it down later in the process if needed. This is when I decide if I'm using pp backgrounds, or cardstock backgrounds.
If I need cardstock I'll pick out something that compliments the papers and photos, and put then in the pile.
Then I'll have a look through my embellishments and pull out anything that might match and be relevant. I don't take out specific things usually, just packs that I can put in the bag with the papers. I'll then do the same with my stamps, pull out a whole bunch that I could use.
I realise pulling out so many options isn't very helpful, but I'll try and take generic things that might suit a few of the kits I'm taking. Or I'd rather take a large selection of embellishments and stamps because I don't have to take all my paper stash with me. If I really have to be restricted then I'll make my decisions and only take what I absolutely want.
I'll also have generic tools such as trimmer, adhesive, brown and black ink, acrylic blocks, etc.
Stickers always throw me, because I have so many half started packs I usually pack a few in hope I can make something out of them. If I don't then my title might have to wait until I get home.
I don't know if this process is helpful to you, hopefully a little! I do find it really good to do regularly because it encourages you to look properly through what you have, refresh your memory and I always try to pull out some old stuff to mix in and use up. | |

Yes I do and yes it helps!
I find that if there is product on my desk in front of me I will use it!! And sometimes force myself to use it!
I make kits off the "theme" of the photos or single photo usually based off the color or season!

I love making kits from my stash! It's such a great way to have supplies that co-ordinate at hand, so you don't have to go digging through your stash every time you want to scrap! |

years ago I went to a Cm class where I bought the kit that had a box & carboard inserts & taught me how to lay out a total album. It was a nice class nothing wrong with it. but it didn't work for me. I got to the crop a few days later & said I'm not in the mood to scrap those pics, use that paper/stickers with that....so I totally undid all that work.
BUT at a different time - 2 wks ago - I decided I was NOT taking everything I owned to a crop & wanted to narrow it down so I created my own kits. I wouldn't totally call it kits - I gathered papers & pics & through them in ziplock bags. That was the BEST THING EVER for me. It forced to me use the papers that were there & since I didn't take others I didn't waste the time looking.
I just grabbed all picks of the same theme - for example I have 3 sets of iceskating pics & all those pics were thrown together with all the winter paper I could find. So not really organized but limited.
I found @ crops I spend FOREVER browsing thru pics & being indecisive about papers - literally I could spend hours & never get started.

I just did that for the first time. I bought the MME Boy Crazy and My Girl chipboard and other embellishments, but NO paper. I have plenty of paper! I laid out the product and went through my stash of patterned paper pulling out everything that matched the colors.
It worked great! I made 6 layouts on Saturday |

I make my own kits and I design my sketch, first then I pull supplies from my stash to create the 1 or 2 page LO. I add only what's needed to complete that kit. I cut my title and bag the embellishments for that LO. I use 13 x 13 scrapbook pockets. I get so much done this way. Good luck. |

I try to do this for crops.
Sometimes I start with pictures, and sometimes I start with paper (especially if I just got new stuff!). I have a general idea if it will be 1 or 2 pages, and pull at least one full sheet to use as background. Then I either pull scraps that coordinate, or if it's new stuff, then I may pull several pieces from a line. Any flat embellies that I want to use, I'll put with this. Also, I'll try to pull a couple of packs of letter stickers/Thickers that might work. All that gets stacked together in an Iris case, with dividers in between kits.
I also take some extra cardstock, border stickers, letter stickers in versatile colors/fonts, and a basket with my most commonly used embellies (or anything new that I'm excited to use!) like washi, brads, buttons, twine.
Then a bag of tools - paper cutter, ATG with extra adhesive, scissors, journal pens, black/brown inks, roller date stamp, MM tool kit with needles/paper piercer, sometimes a border punch or two, and post-its with a regular pen to make notes of anything I need to add when I get home.
My last crop I didn't have time to prep much beforehand, and I got about 1/3 done that I usually do! So definitely worth it for me. And I've got another crop this Saturday, so need to get started! |

I always make kits for crops--whether it's for one photo or a whole vacation. For a one-day or less crop, I just take photos, cs, pp and very few embellishments--I can always embellish when I get back home. For a weekend, I'd take more embellies so my pages can be closer to finished. I've done this for many, many years (15?)
Back in the day I bought some "Page manager by Retrospect" (no longer available) velcro envelopes for 12x12, with some exterior pockets. I have a dozen of them, and when I'm down to just 3 or so full, it's time to have another kit-packing night in my scrap room. I use them at home as well as away. As I finish LOs, the scraps get tossed in a plastic box, to be put away later as I watch a movie or something.
I love to pull a kit for a whole album too. Right now I've got two whole vacation albums kitted up and ready to go on a retreat in March. I use Iris boxes for these. These have been building for a while--I add to it as I see things in my stash that would work. |

I just now put together a kit of my own for a future PL spread.
I am waiting on photos to arrive so this is something fun I can do while I wait.
Plus I won't tear my scrap area apart searching for papers and embellishments when they do arrive. I can just scrap.

I think I need a kit-picking day in my room. Tonight sounds like a great time to start.
I'm thinking of going to a 3 day weekend crop and I need to plan far better than I do for my 6 hour Friday night crops or I'll be loading my entire room into my SUV.

I make kits twice a year. I have found that it helps me gain a perspective on what I actually have in my stash.
Having said that, I store my kits in those clear expandable poly envelopes/pockets you find in packs of ten at M's or Hobby Lobby. I've also used the extra-large Ziploc freezer bags that are 14"x16".
I begin by selecting at least four sheets of patterned paper that look good together. Sometimes I use papers from a coordinated set. Other times I go through all my paper and pull out sheets that just seem to go together. Then I match three or four sheets of cardstock to the papers I've selected. I strictly use Bazzill grasscloth or orange peel texture so that limits my choices somewhat. The last step is to go thru my embellishments and pick out ANY that catch my eye or that I think I might use. Wah-lah, you have a brand new kit.  | |

I've started to make kits when I know I'm going to be scrapping a series of similarly themed photos (ie. the album about my granny visiting me in Sweden, Christmas photos, winter photos, etc.). I do find that this helps me, because as some others have said, I like not having to pull apart all of my stash searching for something time and again. I'm also more likely to use something sitting in front of me rather than packed away (I scrap in my kitchen but my supplies are stored in the lounge so not visible). | |

I make kits with photos in mind. I've tried in the past to just make generic layouts where you can add to the page. It never seems to work. Either the placement is off because of the number of photos I'm using or the colors don't work. | |

I don't really make kits but I have started taking just my kit club kits and my embellishment bag and mists to crops. It really cute down on the time I spend decision-making and limits the amount of stuff I am bringing with me - esp since I am a chronic over-packer and I have a paper stash that rivals some small stores |

The first time I made kits to take to a crop so I could travel lighter. There were left over kits from the weekend and that made it easier to scrap at home when time is limited. Now I always make kits after printing photos, just works better for me. |

I play around with making kits but I make 1, maybe 2 layouts and then I break up the kit b/c I don't like the combos anymore. Maybe I should try making bigger kits with more extras. The ones I made had 7-10 pp plus embellishments. | |

Love this thread. I've been trying to put together some kits in the Ziploc bags so that I can scrap while waiting for our stuff to be shipped. (about 8 weeks) from Canada to Australia.
Which essential tools should I pack to take with me other than cutter, adhesive, scissors?

Sometimes. I'll pull a few pieces of paper I think look good together and maybe some coordinating embellishments and put it in a page protector. It takes some of the guess work out of starting a new page, so it does move the process along a little faster.
Usually I have enough for more than one page at first, but as I use the materials eventually there is only enough left for one page. I like to keep all the scraps together if they're large even after I run out of full size sheets.
I typically make a new kit when I get new papers from a line. I'll keep those together and go through my older stash to see if I have anything that works with them. | |

I do this too, I love it! Since I can't take 1/2 a room with me to crops my only option is kits.
I start with a layout on pinterest or sketch I like for the # of photo's I have. Then I decide on patterned paper. I find the 12X12 sheets to match. I always put a few coordinating colors/patterns in 6X6 size (for photo mats, journal boxes, die-cuts). Then I add embellishments. I always put in some raw chipboard shapes, thickers, journal spots, jolee's, etc that go with the theme/colors.
I've never had an issue and I always use up what I pack. I plan entire mini albums like this too - my entire mini album kit goes into 1 (huge) ziploc baggie! |

I am so loving this! I just made 2 more and I dug deep down in my draws and bins and pulled out some really old stuff from my stash.
It makes me feel so good to use that stuff.
Plus, I mixed patterned papers from various lines, and that's huge for me. Huge, I tell you. |

Sometimes I will just grab a new collection and pull pictures for 2-3 layouts and then slide those pictures into the collection sack. It's the fastest kit I know to make.  |

I love making kits from my stash. I look at colors and patterns and just toss it all in a leftover studio calico box.
Anytime i have a big group of pics, like a birthday or a special trip, I will pull together papers that go along with the mood I want. I force myself to look at older papers i dont think i like very much anymore before moving on to newer stuff.
It also helps because if I know i have put something in a kit more than twice and not used it, i know i wont use it and so it goes in the purge pile. | |

I was just thinking of the video that Shimelle did last year for NSD about the kit Shimelle's NSD video and then some of peas here took the challenge of making a similar kit and making pages from just those supplies...I got 10 pages done and it went quickly because I wasn't taking so much time choosing product!!Thread here

I've started making kits for all of my scrapping. I use Shimelles cutting guide from her Perfect Collection class and cut into my papers, add a bunch of card stock, throw embellishments and stamps (and of course washi) that I want to use. I add the photos I have in mind to use, and then make starting points for all the pages. I'm finding I really like working this way, it limits my product (paper) choices which is where I seemed to get stuck, and let's me work on multiple layouts at a time. That way, if oi get stuck on one, or just want to think about placement, title, etc, I can move on and then come back.
I'm finding I get a lot more accomplished this way, and it works for the chunks of time I have to scrap!

I always scrap at home, so I tend to just pull stuff when I am getting ready to scrap. But I did pull together one last month & while I only made two layouts from the 'kit' it did refamiliarize me with lots of stuff I had forgotten about. It was also a little bit of effort to put it away at the end of the month. So, I am thinking about taking inspiration from the stash kit challenges but not really pulling a whole kit upfront. (I'm lazy & would rather spend my time scrapping) | |

I do for individual LOs. I preplan a lot, you can see my process Here.
I have my embellies sorted by color so I look for things in my color drawers that will fit with each page.
The only thing that I don't like is putting away what ever I don't use.

Some awesome idea. Love the links! I've put together two sets of patterned papers with a 12x12 sticker sheet so far. Need to add some embellishments still but happy with what I've done so far

Sometimes when I wasn't ordering a monthly kit I would put a similar one together with colors and styles. I never really used my own kits. I do use the ones I order though. Its fun to use your stash so give it a try and see if you like it. | |

Sarah, you are welcome to join the Scrap Stash Kit Club for inspiration. We pull a new kit every month from our own scrappy stashes. No shopping. No shipping. Just use your own stash but in a focused way, making old supplies look current, trendy and fresh.
Stash kitting is the best idea! I have never scrapped as much as now when I have a kit to pull from each month. And shopping your stash this way feels just as good as regular scrappy shopping, but you don't have to pay (again). lol!

I make my kits all the time. I often print my photos, make some kits up & then I know I have stuff ready for when inspiration hits.
I work better this way I think since I am so busy with my business & Uni. It's good to have 'go to' stuff. |
