I have a lot of acrylic paint, and a template or two. I prefer a cleaner style, but have been toying with the idea of misting. I "think" I have a bottle or two somewhere in my craft room, but darned if I can locate them. And I vaguely remember getting irritated that the first time I tried to use one of them, the sprayer was stopped up, so I never bought more.
Should I even bother starting? And if so, what brand gives the best color with the least trouble? And what all do I need to begin? And what colors do you get the most use out of? |

I love misting! It's adds a pretty layer without the bulk. I haven't used all the different types of mists, but so far my favorite is Studio Calico. I do like Tattered Angels, but it warps the paper a little bit. Studio Calico mists don't do that. |

I'm cheap and make my own so no help with the brands, but for colors I would suggest thinking about what you scrap with. Do you prefer warm, cool or neutral colors? I prefer cool, and have found myself using my blue and silver mists more than the red/gold or brown/black. | |

I love mists! I both spray and spatter and also use masks.
I started off with a peacock blue Glimmer Mist by Tattered Angels - I quite like the glimmer in addition to the colour and I've never had a problem with the nozzle stopping up. Plus, you get a lot of mist in a decent-sized bottle.
I've also bought some of the Mr. Huey's mists (white and a yellow/orange) by Studio Calico. They are also very nice, although I've noticed that the white Mr. Huey's has a rather thick waxy-like feel on top, which makes it difficult to write on and has caused my previous journaling pen to die. That irritated me a bit. I've also found the Mr. Huey's nozzle's aren't the best - they have a habit of spraying with a large gap in the center or spray off center so you have to not sweat about it being perfect or using them primarily for spattering. The Mr. Huey's bottles are also quite a bit smaller than the Glimmer Mist and they get used up much faster, as they're a thicker spray.
Today I just got my latest order with a Heidi Swapp Colour Shine (primrose) but I haven't had the chance yet to test it out. Looks like a similar sized bottle as Glimmer Mist and a similar consistency. | |

Glimmer mist isn't a paint style mist, it just adds a hint of color and some great shine. My favorite is Diamond, no color just incredible sparkle. A downside is it does warp your paper since it is so wet.
Mr. Huey is new to me and I haven't had a problem out of my bottles but I haven't had them long and don't have very many. The color is nice and rich, I even sprayed a paper mache piece and it covered beautifully. No sparkle to this one.
Sprinklers are what I have the most of, and I do have a few bottles that refuse to spray. It's okay with me since I like drops better anyways, but you might find that a pain. I will say the comparison isn't really fair since I have almost all the colors, and there have been a lot, of course it will appear to have more problems. The color is nice and rich and if I keep buying them they obviously haven't been enough of a pain to stop using them.
Color Shine, is kinda the best of both worlds. It's a nice rich color but also has the most amazing shine. I even used it on canvas and the sparkle came through. I only have one color, Tinsel, but I plan getting several more because I really like this one. |

I have a ton of Tattered Angel Glimmer Mist. Very nice shine, but the amount of "color" is variable- many are just glimmer with a hint of color. I also have the Ranger Color Wash sprays for an intense color. They are very vibrant. I just got a couple of Mister Hueys- white and gold, which I have not used yet.
I have used the Tim Holtz stains with some masks and stencils. They are a bit watery, so they run under the stencil and give a more "imperfect" line. |

I use three kind of mist:
- Studio Calico Mister Huey's
- Heidi Swapp Color Shine
- October Afternoon Sprinklers
The SC mists are great for an all-over color, for using with a mask, for using with wood veneer shapes, and for using as paint. My favorite colors are Buttermilk and Mint Julep. They dry really quickly, and don't allow the page to buckle. Calico White is also a must-have for me.
The HS mists have an iridescent sheen that I totally adore. The colors are bright, and what you see in the bottle is reflective of what will show up on the page. They are great for using for overall color (and shine -- oh, the shine!) and with masks, and they are a splatter-and-drip-lover's dream. I have every single color, but my favorites are Primrose and Mint Green. The Gold Lame is also amazing.
The OA Sprinklers are bold in color and have an opaque finish that is almost paint-like. They are perfect for dripping and splattering. I just shake up the bottle, open the cover, and drip, drip, drip. LOVE the effect. I also use mine as paint from time to time. My favorite colors are Miss Mary Mack, Red Wagon, Crepe Paper, Carbon Copy, and Pink Balloon. |

Thanks for all the info, guys! I did find a single bottle of the Tattered Angels in my ink pad drawer, and I now remember using it on some chipboard, but not directly on my paper. I also have some Perfect Pearls in the white and gold. Going to play with those later.
Guess I will be ordering a couple bottles of Mr. Huey and Heidi Swapp and giving them a try, too! |

I have one glimmer mist that came in a kit; I haven't tried it yet, but it's pretty in the bottle 
I have a bunch of Mr. Huey's and I do like and use them often. They are basically opaque and don't shine.
I bought Heidi Swapp's colorshine in gold and loved it so much I went and bought a bunch more colors. So far I have only tried a few. These are my favorite. Nice shine and color but not an opaque color unless you spray heavily. They also spray easily and haven't stopped up yet!
I have a few OA Sprinklers that I enjoy, but I don't use them often because I have more limited colors. |

I'm a beginner too! I love the Heidi Swapp Color Shine mists - I have gold lame (gorgeous!) and a peach one. They dry nicely and give a lovely shiny color. Not an opaque paint color though, if that's what you're looking for.
I also have 1 Mister Huey's - a white one. I hate it! It's easy to use and looks fine, but it *never* dries! I used it for the first time last May, and if you touch it on the LO, you will still get white chalky residue on your hands. Yuck!
I just ordered 2 Glimmer Mists (they're 50% off here in the store) to try out.
I think OA will be my next purchase - I like the more opaque paint look, but I don't have a local source for it, so it will have to wait for my next 2Peas order. |

I have a hughe collection of Mister Huey's - but the Heidi Swapp Color Shine is pretty awesome, especially the Gold Lame. ANd btw the Heidi Swapp Color Shines are basically the same price as the Mister Hueys and they're twice as big - 2oz vs. 1 oz. |

BTW - I think it's the OA Sprinklers that don't spray very well. At least the older ones don't. I have 2 and only one works right. |

I love mist, but I don't do anything unique or crazy with it - usually just literally "misting" or splattering! I prefer Mr. Huey because they're lighter and absorb into the paper, but I picked up two of the Heidi Swapp ones on a whim and like the sparkle. There are some great basic tutorials out there, recently this video from Elizabeth Kartchner's new website was featured on Studio Calico's blog, and it has a variety of misting suggestions. PS oh, the one downside to Mr. Huey is that the tops do need cleaning pretty often or they clog up kind of bad. But I love them anyway  | |

I rarely hear about Dylusions sprays by Ranger and I like them a lot! They don't have any shine and the color is very saturated. I have sprayed veneers and got good coverage with one spray.
I use Mr Huey's as well but I have splatters or painted more than I have misted.
I am not often into sparkle but I do have HS gold lame and it is fantastic! | |

I am a mist junkie. I have tattered angels, delusions, Heidi swapp colorshine, October afternoon sprinklers and a ton of studio calico mr Huey. They all are different, If you want more of an opaque paint look the sprinklers are the best but hard to find. For saturated color and shine go for the colorshine and the bottles are huge. For flat color that are nice I like the mr Huey's, they just came out with nine new colors. I would pick a color you like and go from there. | |

Thanks guys! I am going to check out the videos, and I also did a little Googling after the mention of Heidi Swapp being carried at M's. Looks like they will have everything I need to get started, so I guess I will pick up a couple of bottles of that to start. I also found a youtube video about making your own with alcohol and acrylic paint. Easy peasy. I can see me doing that as well, especially since I have a ton of MM paints in colors I love already. |

Tonya - all of the mists mentioned in this thread can be used to do splatters. I have also seen people use acrylic paint by dipping the paintbrush in and then thumbing along the bristles (a much smaller splatter) and spray paint, by spraying into the lid and the tipping it and tapping the side (much larger drops) | |

I have owned four bottles of mists, two of which were tattered Angels and two of which are Ditto, a brand I bought in M's discount section. My original bottle, which I bought several years ago, was a meadow green Tattered angels mist. I had it for years, loved it at first, but eventually it stopped up, so I had to toss it.
That's about when i got the other three bottles. The tattered angels is brown, the other two are red and purple.
So...Green and brown are good colors to have. Red is somewhat helpful, but Glitter Girl recently made a point I had not thought of before, it's better to paint with red than spray with red, because the sprayed red looks kind of like spattered blood. Well, yes, except for on my one layout where I sprayed red and then sprayed brown over that.
Purple is nice sometimes, but I use it the least.
Tattered Angels definitely sprays a finer, more easily controlled mist than Ditto. If I could figure out a way to take the Ditto bottles apart and paint with them instead, I think i would. |
