I have an Etsy shop, but most of my items are supplies instead of finished products. Probably my most popular item is washi tape samples - washi that you can pick in 1-2 yard increments.

As I understand it, yes, you are supposed to file taxes and have a business license if you want to sell your crafts for profit. I sell occasionally at local craft shows, so I did get a Local Business License, and I report quarterly to the IRS. If you do business under your own name or a DBA (which is how I do it), you don't need a Tax ID, you can just file under your social security number.
I have to think of it as a hobby, though... after tallying expenses, etc. I pretty much just break even. I think you can post a loss/no profit for three years with the IRS. If I don't manage to turn a profit by next year, I will likely disband it. TBH, I don't have a lot of time to invest in promoting my business, so I'm not surprised, but it is a bummer. |
