On another thread of mine asking about how much you pack for a crop, someone said she could fit 14 page kits into an iris box. I am guessing I could only fit four or five, and sometimes only two or three. I grab a lot--any pp and cs and embellishments that might go, ad then I pick as I go. I probably use one tenth of what I pack for each layout.
So how much work do you put into page planning, how specific are you, how much do you stick to your plans, and how much goes into a page kit?
Thanks. |

I think I'm like you and put in far more than I end up using. I'm still working on finding that perfect balance.
For me, I typically have about 8 patterned papers and perhaps two colours of cardstock (maybe). I seem to end up with about 5 different letter stickers (need to cut back pulling so many), one sticker sheet (if available), various journaling cards and/or borders, washi tape, gems/pearls/brads, 3-4 choices of ribbon/twine/floss and then whatever other random bits call to me from my stash.
As for planning, that's a lot harder to say. Sometimes I start with a plan in my head for what I want to do and sometimes I don't. I like sketches but I hate wasting time and creative mojo searching for the right sketch when I could be scrapping so if I have a sketch in mind, I might go with it or just wing it.

I design my LOs first for my page kits. I sketch it after picking my pictures and I write down a title on a 3 x 5 blank notecard. Nothing fancy just a road map that tells me, what I plan to do. I then shop my scrap room and pull papers, cardstock and embellishments. This is the fun part, I also pull eyelets and brads, anything I think I want to use on my LO. I sit down and with my sketch I decide how things are going to be used. I weed out what is not going to be used and I put them back. If I need to paint something and ink somethingI do it before I pack up the kit. Everything is prepped before I shelf my page kit. I page loose things and place them in a 13 x 13 Scrappocket that is 3 ringed punch. These pockets have come from various places over the years, but my favorite were the ones that the Container store use to sell, I do buy pockets from M's and HL, but I have to punch them myself. All of my kits travel in Generations Scrapportfolios ( I own 4), They are slippered binders with 3 rings. I place my kits in either 2 or all 4 if I'm going to a Retreat and I grab my Totally tool kit that I place in a bag so nothing loose falls off and its lost. Thats all I take. Everything, prepared just not put together. Very much like a kit that I could have purchased. I still get the fun of putting things together. I prefer to travel light and this has worked for me for nearly 10 yrs. Good luck. |

I tend to scrap themed projects at crops - so anything left over from one page kit can be used in another if needed.
So for a double page layout: two sheets of cardstock for the foundation, one or two printed papers, journalling block or tag, a few flat embellis if I have them, the die cut title on a xyron strip. If my project is garden related then I take a container with flowers or flower punch, ribbon, themed stuff. If it's disney, then my papertaker of Disney stickers/embellis. I can fit all the stuff for a 3 day weekend crop in my medium sized roller bag, and the CM square tote box for tools.

Mine are pretty basic.
Start with the pics. Pick a sketch to go with. Choose papers (or a few different papers and make up my mind later which I'll use). I only add other things if there's something specific I know I want to use. At least for home, where all my stuff is. If I was going somewhere I might look for a few things to add in case I want to use them though. 'Away' pages I might plan out a little more, at home usually not so much. |

the only time i go away to scrap i'm going for 3 days so i pack differently than if it was just a day crop.
my page kits are photos, patterned paper, cardstock to match (couple choices) and a sketch or layout idea. if i think of it i'll jot down a title idea or two. and always the date. i hate finishing a page and not having the date and having to look it up later.
i pack all my embellishments separate as they are stored at home. |

I'd fit about four or five kits in an Iris box, too. I fill them with lots of goodies. After I use them but before I disassemble the kit, I re-use as many parts and pieces as I can.
My kits are packed with patterned papers, embellies, an alpha or two, twine, brads, embellies, and everything but the kitchen sink. Nothing lays flat and everything's lumpy. I'm big on texture, layers, and bling. |

I find I have better luck packing my page kits in an album rather than a box. I've tried both and just had better success with the practicality of getting pages home safely, etc, with an album. My notes on packing are covered in this post, if it's helpful.
Of course, really my page kits look a bit like the beginning of every Glitter Girl video - it's the same process of gathering supplies whether it's at home or away! |

I try to have a plan in mind for each page. I start with my photos, then I try to make a sketch, or use a sketch, pick out the papers and cardstock, then I go for embellies and if I have time, I will use my Cricut ot Cameo to make die cuts and titles. If no time, I use what I have in my stash (or both. i bring stamps that could work on any page so I am not lugging a lot of items that won't even get touched...and I add from there...washi tape, badges, etc... |

I still have a few Studio Calico in my stash so lately I just pick some sketches and photos and put them in with the whole kit. Makes packing easy and I use more of the kit up.
Otherwise I put together
Sketch with notes + photos
Cardstock - 2-4 sheets
Patterned paper - 1-3 or scraps
Flat Embellishments - journal spots, labels, sticker sheet, chipboard
In my crop bag I have a small bag that holds bling and brads, a folder with some letter stickers/thickers and a pencil box with pens, eraser, piercer/stylus, scissors, ink pads for edging, needle+brown/green/cream floss, stickles and a glue pen. |

I use the plastic envelope type bags from M's for page kits. I put my photos along with a hand drawn sketch and pattern papers, cardstock, journal cards, alphas - anything flat - in the bag. Usually a bag can hold 3 - 4 page kits. I throw any bulky supplies into an Iris case, so if I make 10 page kits, all the washi, chipboard, mists, buttons, brads, etc are in that 1 box.

Thanks. These are very helpful ideas. I have never used sketches so I really don't know what I am going to do with the photos till I start playing, but it might make sense to try. I also like the idea of limiting--only brown and black ink would work for the vast majority of my layouts; picking five rolls of washi tape should work, etc, |

I love to use sketches too and will then grab photos. I typically grab waaaaay more than I need, but I enjoy taking time to make a "kit." Since my lss closed, I don't go to crops often but I still like to make kits while I'm scrapping at home.
It usually looks something like this:
- sketch
- photos
- several sheets of cardstock (scraps of white for stamping)
- 3-8 sheets of patterned paper (6x6 pads work great for this)
- several stamp sets and coordinating stamp stuff (inks, cleaner, cleaning pad, acrylic block. maybe embossing powders and embossing tool)
- coordinating punches
- 2-3 sets of alpha stickers
- coordinating embellishments (might be premade or I'll make them. I'll grab tools if I'm making them such as the Martha Stewart score board)
- couple rolls of washi, buttons, brads, veneers, mist or colored baker's twine
- my basic tool kit which holds all types of adhesive, scissors, Tim Holtz tiny attacher, ruler, WRMK cropodile, brushes, pens, date stamps, hemp twine
Whoa - that's a lot of stuff. lol
