Love this post by Mirabyll. I'm allergic to stamping, but I like the idea of using them just to create embellishments. What are your favorite stamps that you find are really versatile and get a lot of use?

I do this all the time! I have lots of singleton stamps from Maya that are really good for it. Also October Afternoon and my SC Project life stamps.

I have a drawer where I keep all my paper embellishments like the ones that come in packets with a paper line. I have them organized by size in a drawer insert and add my stamped and cut out embellishments to that insert.

Sometimes I spend a couple hours just playing with stamps, ink, and embossing powders to make them. It's a fun thing to do without having to think much about it and then the embellishments are ready when I want them.

I've been loving this KI Memories stamp. I've found it's great for stamping directly onto LOs or journaling cards or scraps of paper for making embellishments.

cengland, those are great. I know I use a lot of stickers in those arrows shapes and it would be fun to make my own.

Great idea! I did something similar with my Spellbinders nestabilities. I cut a bunch of the same shape in white, cream, black, and kraft. They are fun little elements to add to layers.

I absolutely love this idea. I'm always looking for heart shapes to add to my layouts, so I bought a stamp set on sale with several types of heart shapes so I can create my own embellies. Much more cost effective than the multiple dies I was looking at to get the various shapes I want.

Thanks for posting!

This is a great idea!

My house is being renovated and we are squeezed into a tiny room, so it is hard to spread out and scrap regularly. But I could definitely pull some stamps and find a corner to do this in, and still feel productive. Love it!

The stamp sets that Amy Tan releases along with her lines work REALLY well to create embellishments. They are whimsical and quite versatile!

set from "Yes Please"...
Love Struck

American Crafts puts out fun stamp sets with many of their lines that are easy to use to create embellisments, add a stamped touch to a layout or even adapt for using on a card. I use This Soho Garden set all the time!

I'm having a hard time searching the 2 Peas store for ONLY AC stamps - but here are a bunch of them: Stamps

Dear Lizzy also has sets that work well for making embellishments.

In the figurative sense. I think it's that cleaning up stamps reminds me of doing the dishes? Or that they're just a touch unpredictable in my hands..

LOL, Catherine! You clean your stamps? No wonder you're 'allergic'! 'Madge' convinced us that Dawn was a beauty treatment. Didn't buy it then or now.

Glad to hear you might check out the stamping party. We still have several days to go & then we do 'Hangover week'.

Looking over the entries to our challenges, I'm seeing some from scrappers. Cool!

Journaling stamps (e.g. Autumn Leaves/Stampology For the Record series, 7Gypsies Take Note or Journaling sets, Jenni Bowlin mini book series, & Catslife Press scrapbooking/journal stamps) are incredibly versatile & easily used to create homemade embellishments for traditional layouts or Project Life.

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! this idea!!!

I have tons of stamps and always forget which ones I have. When I do get time to scrap I dig through them and grab something. If I already have them stamped, it would save time AND I met actually get more done.

I think what one person considers versatile may be different from what someone else might think is versatile, depending on your style. I just keep my eyes open whenever I am looking at stamps. I try to figure out how I would use it on a page or to create an element. I tend to like anything that can be journaled on (luggage tag, library check out card, or some other stamp with a place to write something), but since I also do lots of beach pages, seashells are versatile for me for creating page elements or a background paper. Versamark ink is also a staple, since I can stamp colored cardstock with the Versamark for a subtle watermark design for the background, but not be plain like colored cardstock normally is.

Also, I like small alphabets with extra vowels and commonly used letters such as "s" or "t" because then I can spell almost any word I want instead of relying on a stamp that is a word or phrase. I honestly can't see using a phrase like "a great moment" from a stamp set over and over again. It would get old really fast (for me).

Small thin pattern stamps are versatile, because I can use them to create my own Washi tape.

I love script word background stamps and music background stamps for making tag elements. I don't do elements as elaborate as Tim Holtz, but I love stamps for adding a little something.

I love stamp sets with lots of variety on them, because I figure I will use most of them eventually one way or another. Several variety sets have been linked in this thread, but what surprised me is that the link given in the OP showed all the elements stamped in black. Why not layer them? Add some color? You can use markers or stamp in multiple colors then cut and glue layers (or pop the layers for dimension) so that it doesn't just look like a flat stamped image so much. Or use embossing powder and heat embossing for a raised design that will resist a contrasting ink added with a sponge or swiped on with another inkpad.

FWIW, though, I was a stamper before I was a scrapbooker, so my first page was stamped, and I have collected lots of versatile stamps over the years whenever I have found stamps that I felt I could use over and over in various ways and for different layouts. Picking one or two favorites would be very difficult, but I think that the Close to My Heart (CTMH) company has released one or two very versatile sets in just about every catalog. (No, I'm not a rep, but I have more CTMH stamps that I consider versatile than from any other company.)

I believe the OP said in her post that she was stamping in black but would go back and color to match her layouts as she used them. I agree, layering them would add a lot too

I love the idea of making embellishments for layering from stamps! I was just about to try this myself, and now I am even more motivated.

I just bought a couple of travel stamp sets (and yes, I FINALLY can use an Eiffel tower image because my dd was in Paris). I plan to pull a bunch of papers into a kit, then use those colors to pick my inks for stamping and the backgound paper for stamping too. I noticed a lot of collections have a sheet of die cuts or stickers, and I plan to do something like that, diecutting some tags, label shapes, banners, pinked circles etc. from the papers for layering too, as well as the stamped images.

I bought some distressed old looking papers; some with faint grids or lines or just "old looking/stained" to use as the background paper for stamping embellishments. If I actually get it done I will post my results.

Ok, I spent most of my morning stamping! Most of mine are journaling stamps, some arrows, blank decorative circles, etc. I did a few simple shapes too, just for variety (I can color them or add embellishment later). I have a huge stack of paper filled with stamps that need to be cut out now! That will be a good project for when I'm watching TV. So glad I read this post though, I had almost given up on my stamps, even though I love how they look!

I have a big alpha roller stamp that is verty similar to the new one out by pebbles. I stamp a saying on white cardstock and then cut it out as a horizontal flag /banner shape. I then mat it with patterned paper.

I also have written in a thin glue stick or white pen (can't remember which) and then heat emboss with fine white embossing powder.

I love making my own page elements.

Don't forget about using digital stamps too to personalize your pages, cards...etc.
