I feel like I have a ton of scrapbooking supplies. Sometimes, I just feel like I'm buying so that I actually have all the colors of the rainbow. But I don't know when or if I am going to use them.

Then, I remember I like to have exactly what I need when I need it. So I do enjoy having 4 shades of yellow mists.

And then, I see other people posting on their blog about their scrapbook room and I see they have 8 shades of yellow. And I wonder how they feel? Isn't it too much? Really, I am just trying to stop feeling guilty about buying 3 different shades of green embossing powder (which are in my cart right now).

I scrap and I see my stuff and I'm like, I should really use this right now cause I bought it two months ago and I haven't touched it.

Do you see what I mean?

Is this all my in head? What do you girls think?

absolutely!! I have been scrapbooking for over 10 years, and I know the amount of money I have spent is in the thousands of dollars. I go through phases of being good, but lately I haven't been. When I see the amount of supplies that I have had/still have compared to completed projects it is a little disheartening.

I am getting better about using things and buying with a purpose. Not just buying something because it was cheap, cute or whatever.
Also, I am doing PL style of scrapbooking that has helped me use up some of the things I have had for a while.

I don't buy expensive clothes, go out to eat much etc. This is how I justify it.

I don't feel guilty! As long as you are actually using said products, then it is fine! It's your hobby! It makes your life a bit more fun too. I think we beat ourselves up a little due to the PACE we use up our scrapbooking goodies. Don't do that! As for having multiple shades, we all do! Things need to match, and as a result varying shades of product are required.

I personally have a whole room of product (which makes me happy), a walk in closet of high end clothing, purses, and shoes, good quality make-up and hair products, and a love of Tiffany's jewelry. Do I need all this? Well no. But do I enjoy it all-YES.

What's to feel guilty about? Maybe if you aren't using it or if you are rubbing it in a friend's face or something...but buying tools and supplies for a hobby that you use? What is the guilt in that?

Do men feel guilty over their extensive tool collections? Their golf equipment? Their hobby cars or motorcycles. Do you think that they should?

Why feel guilty? As long as there is food on the table and bills are paid, I don't see any reason to feel guilty about having a hobby (as long as the supplies are used nd not just sitting on the shelf).

sometimes I do because I buy MUCH faster than I USE it! I don't have any more space for more stuff but I just keep buying and now it is even harder to use ANYTHING because its all so crammed in here!

yes and no. I also have in the thousands worth of supplies, I've been scrapping for 14 or 15 years now and I still buy every month, but I also create. I've done 3 layouts this weekend, so the supplies do not just sit. But lately I feel like i have too much and I need to purge, and that is making me feel a bit guilty for the waste. However I don't throw it away, I share and donate so it all goes to a good home. I could never buy again and still make 5000 layouts i think, but half the fun is the shopping, it inspires me!

Yes. I have been guilty of buying more than I can use. I currently own 4 die cutting system which I think is over the top. That is why I've been frozen and working on downsizing the stash. I know what you mean... When is enough really enough.

Yes, you should feel guilty if you are not able to feed your family, pay your bills, save for retirement, and cover your medical needs and you are buying scrapbooking stuff instead.

If your bills are paid, you are saving for your future, and your house is not eligible for an episode of Hoarders because you can't walk through the door due to your accumulated stash, then there is nothing to feel guilty about.

I do think there are times when many of us need to look at what we have and how we are spending and decide if that fits into our bigger life plans. It is certainly possible that there are scrappers among us here on this board who are spending money that would be better saved for a rainy day, etc. And I am also sure there are scrappers whose houses need to be cleaned out a lot, who need to collect less junk. But only you can decide where you stand on this.

There is nothing inherently wrong with having a hobby, and collecting and organizing supplies appear to be hobbies, as well as actually scrapping. For me, there are times when I definitely have to reign it in, and times when I can get all the things I really want and feel ok with it. Only you can decide.

We all have a certain amount of funds to spend on things that make us happy.

If scrapbook supplies make me happy, why should I feel any more guilty than someone who buys handbags, jewelry, or countless pairs of expensive shoes?

I buy what I like with the money I have available and they buy what they like.

As long as we come by the funds honestly, and we're not causing anyone in our home or family to suffer because of our hobby, then why feel guilty? Enjoy!

Not any more, now that I am using my stuff ALL THE TIME and have stopped trying to justify a hobby by selling things. DH has several hobbies and is perfectly happy (more than) for me to have scrapping/colouring as my hobby. When I get new stuff I make sure I use it right away. A box gets opened, sorted, and then I decide what I can make right away. That way when I finally do file things into their storage areas a week later I'm putting away used paper and embellishments with a few items missing, kwim? Helps me feel productive. I *do* have a very small stash though. While I need to keep some things on hand to make sure I can craft at all times I do like to keep it simple. The only thing that can be considered "you have ENOUGH already!" is my Halloween paper and even that is still contained in just one Cropper Hopper holder. I get satisfaction from being able to use up a paper line, or an embellishment pack, and move on to the next thing without guilt.

The only place I go a little off from this is with my digital stamps. Most companies provide bundles for a discount, or have sales where it's cheaper to buy a bunch at once. Problem is when you get 20 stamps at once, you tend to want to move on before using all 20. I'll use one or two and then it's on to the next. With a release every week, it's a bit overwhelming. But I'm combating that too so I don't feel guilty. I have a little ticker box on my website that shows the company, how many digis I have to use, and the progress I've made. It's REALLY helped motivate me to enjoy what I buy and stop feeling guilty for going on digi spending sprees!

Compared to a lot of people I don't have a ton but I do feel myself I have a good bit. I don't shop a lot really but when I get extra money for Christmas or birthday I usually spend it on scrappy stuff.

So no I don't feel guilty. My husband and I are huge walking dead fans and he ask me all the time "what are you going to do when the zombies come?" My response is and will always be...that's what rolling carts are for! No way am I leaving my scrappy things behind

I have an order coming Monday and I told myself it is going to be my last for a long time, I am almost out of room to store stuff. My problem is paper, I feel the need to have all the shades of cardstock and I am a glutton for patterned paper. I am so picky about things matching that yes I do need 10 different shades of pink cardstock because one may have a gray tone to it, one may have a red tone to it, etc. ACK!

I am the type who doesn't care if the scrapbooking product is not trendy or is 10 years old as long as it matches my photos. The other day I used something from my stash from 2001, so I know some day I will use what I buy. Paper doesn't expire like food.

But for me it is getting financially that I can't afford it, and that's where I have to draw the line. My daughter is older and needs more expensive things and I don't want to skimp on her because I want to place an order for the new CHA stuff. LOL. So I am very happy I bought my stash when I could afford to.

So I would say if you are getting into credit card debt or you don't use the stuff then you should definitely rethink your buying.

You can see this is a subject I have thought about....

I only feel guilty once in a while for about 5 minutes when my sister, who does not scrap, makes a comment.

As a SAHM of teenagers, it's easy to be made to feel guilty for spending money on yourself when you're not bringing any in at the moment.

I really need to spend more time scrapping and less time talking to my sister!

That is how I am. My little space and all my goodies make me feel good most of the time but once in awhile a little comment from somebody who doesn't "get it" will make me feel bad. I get over it quickly because deep down I feel that having a hobby is really important. I have read so many studies that say having a hobby is wonderful for your physical and mental health.

I can say that at some point having too much doesn't make me feel guilty but it does really make it hard to create. It sounds weird but I feel like when I have too many supplies and choices I actually get less done.

Right now I only feel guilty if I'm not using my stash. I have friends who buy multiple high-end running shoes, jewelry, antiques, etc and they don't feel guilty about their hobby. Mine's just a little different because it has it's own room and is visible. But it's the recreation that I enjoy.

But if we experience a hardship, I am sure I'll feel guilty with it staring me in the face.

^^^^^ That's true, my doctor's have actually said so. I mean, yeah, still sitting here with a fatal disease, but since I started being home all the time and devoting myself to my writing and crafting they saw marked improvements. They even asked at one point what I'd done differently and I just said "colouring?" Things that make you happy improve your health.

I am making a T-shirt quilt for my daughter and I went to the plastic bins that hold the MANY MANY yards of fabric that I bought and never used back when I sewed.

Yeah, there was a twinge of regret, but I know that if I hadn't enjoyed myself by shopping for fabric I would have spent it on something else because I was spending my 'fun' money.

Thank you all for the many many responses and interesting point of view.

I see I am not the only one who tought about this.

I am in no kind of financial debt whatsoever. I am very responsible with my money and I, actually, switch jobs and got a major raise. I do put money aside and provide for my daughter as much as my husband. I don't have to worry about my daughter's education because my parents have already opened a trust fund for her. She is 2, so by the time she goes to school, there will be plenty of money in there for her (we live in Quebec, by the way, where school is a lot cheaper than in the US).

With all that said, I do enjoy all of my supplies and get excited like a little girl when I open my monthly box of Two Peas supplies. I actually danced in front of the mailman who brought my box last week. It IS definetly making me happy and, therefore, a better mother and wife.

I'll keep that in mind next time I feel guilty. Thanks for all your answers, I loved sharing those thoughts with you.

Sometimes I feel guilty about all the packaging and plastic.
Even the paper. I try really hard to use things from around the house, like cereal boxes and things to use as chipboard. Even make art journals and minis with them.

But I have no debt, and I enjoy using and buying my supplies. I did put my self on a buying limit, forcing myself to use what I have.

Sure. Sometimes I wonder if I really need all of it. I'm not going into debt over it or anything, but I do have quite a bit of a stash, and don't always get a lot of scrapping done, since I have a full time job and 2 little kids. So, I don't get through it very quickly But, like others...I don't have a lot of other hobbies that I spend money on, and I don't spend much money on myself period. It makes me happy.

I have a tiny stash so I don't feel guilty at all. But I am also using it. If I wasn't using it I'd feel very guilty. Collecting scrap supplies is not a hobby to me, I don't understand it. So to me, as long as you're using your stuff I don't see a problem.

I don't really feel guilty about having so many supplies. I consider collecting the supplies almost a hobby in itself. Also, I get a lot of happiness from watching some video on a new technique for example and being able to go to my stash and immediately give it a try. I know I have way too much stuff and space has already become an issue but this is the only thing I spend my money on and if I can't spend my money on what makes me happy, then why am I working?

Nope. Not a bit. A hobby doesn't have to make sense. Some people collect things that are never even taken out of the package. The "collecting" is their hobby.

But I will say that I feel better about my spending when I am USING my stash a good bit. I have kitted up 29 double page 12x12 LOs in Sept and am attending a weekend crop where I plan to put all those LOs together. My albums have been growing a lot fatter these past few months and I love that.

I don't feel guilty. I am glad that I have learned over the years which supplies I will use and which ones I won't. The early purchases of those that I never used have gone to my kids or their teachers. So nothing was wasted. Scrapbooking is my stress reliever, so nothing to feel guilty about there.

I don't feel guilty about the size of my stash, but I am on a mission now, after years of collecting, to use it or give it away.

Earlier this year I went through my 10 or so years of stash and purged a lot of stuff. Now that seemed like a waste of money but live and learn. I now have a much better understanding of my tastes and style and only buy what I love and will use, and I've never been one to drop a bunch of money on supplies. So no, I don't feel guilty because this is my hobby, it's fun, and it makes me happy.

Yes and no - I love new supplies. I can afford them and all other obligations are more than taken care of. I think it's important to have lots of choices, so that my creativity isn't stifled! lol

But I do feel a bit guilty about not using some items. I go through my stash regularly and make room for new stuff. I used to buy any paper pack if I liked some of the sheets - but I try to be pickier now - if I don't love it or really see myself using it, I don't get it. Or I'll just get the 3 papers I like instead of buying the whole kit. And I've been working on using a lot of my stash this year - instead of hoarding it!

No I don't.

Yes, I have tons of supplies, I still have things from when I started and I KNOW I won't use anymore.

Two times a year I go through my stash and sort out 'unneccessary' supplies. I have friends who work in kindergarten, so they get these things. Makes the kids happy, makes me happy.

If you don't use the supplies, why not selling them? Fleamarket, garage sale...

Don't feel guilty, why should you? Unless your shopping behaviour makes you go bankrupt or has become a serious addiction, of course

It is your hobby, it makes you happy. A happy you makes your friends and family happy.

Guilty??? what does that mean? that word doesn't exist!! wash your mouth out with soaspy water for using such a bad word!!!
You can never have too much crafting supplies and equipment .......... hahahaha

Seriously I don't smoke, I don't drink, I rarely go out socialising so I can spend my allowance on what makes me happy. My kids get plenty and more of what they need.

I don't drink or smoke. Crafting is my vice.
