Hi Peas,

Up until now I have been printing my photos on matte finished. I have always chosen matte and I dont know why. Yesterday I was at staples and advance photo paper with glossy finish was on sale, BOGO and I have a reward coupon so I thought I would give it a shot. Im not sure if I like the glossy look but it may just be Im not use to is. However I am noticing that the colors are richer more saturated, or is this my imagination?
What do you prefer glossy or matte and why?

and please tell me everything will be ok and that my photos will still be beautiful because I only have 97 more 8x11 sheets left

ps: Sorry if this is a double post. but im not sure what happened to my first try...

personally I've always printed mine with glossy photo paper. Now I want to try and print them with matte paper and see what they look like. I guess I've just always printed them off in glossy. I do think the colours are a bit more rich. When I do print and cut on the silhouette I have been using matte photo paper and the results are awesome.

I always like glossy, except for my wedding photos - I had those printed matte because I wanted something more vintage/timeless. Sometimes it depends on the project and the overall look I'm going for. I think glossy does make the colors richer - not sure why that is? Try it and see what you think?

I prefer matte as well, for all the same reasons Maddybray listed.

And yes, your photos will still be beautiful!

I print glossy. Once they're in a page protector you get a glare anyways.

Glossy DOES have richer colors and things look sharper, more in focus. I hate matte because it looks unprofessional to me, like cheap 110 pictures from years gone by. As another pea pointed out, you'll have glare anyway from page protectors.

I do glossy mostly because that is what I have always done. I do like matte sometimes.

I print 99% of my photos on glossy. I will print an occasional special image on matte if there is something about it that will look better to me - like a soft shot of a newborn or from a wedding - but then I will usually print them at a specialist lab to get the best finish.

Glossy prints get fingerprints but they clear off in two seconds with a cloth. I still notice fingerprints on matte only they seem almost impossible to remove entirely. My top preference for standard prints to scrap is glossy on actual photo paper with the development process for richest colours and just the right amount of softness.

Ive been mostly a matte person, but I've used satin before, love the result. It's not glossy, not matte, but has a soft, slight sheen to it, great color. Best of both worlds. Problem is, it can be hard to find. I much prefer it though when I can get it.

I used to be a matte girl, but glossy is just cheaper, and really for the amount of printing I do I decided it was time to stop being so snobby. I still have matte in my over-sized photo paper sizes because they don't come in glossy, but I am perfectly happy with the results on both.

I think both styles can look lovely depending on the subject matter so I switch between matte and glossy depending on the photos. Mostly I use glossy, it seems to suit a lot of what I shoot like outside at the beach or in the snow or Christmas photos where I want things to look brighter. If I want a more subdued look, like a portrait for example, I will choose matte. I think it is fun to have the choice and it gives us another way to personalize our photos for our style.

I prefer matte from labs, but at home, I do think the glossy is a bit more vivid.

Funny! I just had a photo paper epiphany recently! For years I printed everything on matte. I did not like the thickness of the glossy paper. When I had to replace my age old printer I tried all the sample papers that were included in my new printer box and I thought that the glossy prints were beautiful. They had so much more depth and color. I loved it! I'm sure I will still use matte but for now I am a glossy convert!

I use both for different things....

My favourite though, is 'soft gloss' has the rich colours of glossy but is not quite so it!

I like matte & it's a very strange reason why but the short version is I used to be a photography student who printed her own prints for class. My first few teachers preferred matte for finished prints. As did I. Matte was the professional finish. Glossy was for trash prints & contact sheets. Matte paper was heavier (what we were required to buy) so ever since then glossy was trashy matte was finish. You get that stuck in your head & it never really leaves. plus black & white prints look better on matte. You have a harder time with gloss getting the contrast just right. Now on color digital prints I just like how they look matte.

Thank you so much for all your answers. I have not had any time the last couple of days to check in. I wish there was a way to "like" and "comment" on all your answers Because you all provided such great insights...

It good to know the difference in color is not my imagination, whew... Well I will work though my 97 sheets of glossy paper and see what I like after it all done. I might just surprise myself

I will take note of the fingerprints and try to remember not to touch the photo. I didnt even realize that was an issue with glossy...

Thanks again Peas for all your great answers!

I have switched to soft gloss because I have found it more difficult to find Matte photo paper and I am not a huge fan of glossy.

You should form your own opinion about the look of your photos. They are your YOUR albums. No one that looks at your albums would think to say "oh, these photos would looks so much better if she printed them in __________."
I don't think they would even notice.

Another matte vote. I used to have all my photos printed in glossy but after a mix up I ended up with matte and have never looked back, I just prefer the finish and look more than glossy.

I love matte printed photos, but I do agree that it depends on the project.
