...former Journey member and American Idol judge, Randy Jackson. Just heard the news from Ryan Seacrest on Twitter:
Here's the news and link to song.
Give the song a listen...they do a great job with it. I just love to hear Journey songs, no matter who's singin' 'em!
What do you think of it? |

Wow. I love Boyz II Men! Totally putting that album on my 'to buy' list, that's a great cover of Open Arms.

Awesome remake! They managed to stay true to the song and still put their own spin to it. |

If you like Journey then check out the "literal version" of their songs on Youtube. I love the one for Separate Ways.

Two extra points to the pea who can name the FIRST movie soundtrack that featured this song (no cheating)....And the winner is...:

I'm not gonna cheat and I'll probably embarrass myself, because I should know this. But I'm thinking "Tron" for some reason.... |

The music nerd in me considers it a bit over-vocalized as Boyz II Men tends to be, and also winced at "living withoutchooooo" (a musical pet peeve of mine), but I swear I'm not a total wet blanket. I actually find it kind of catchy in an "I'd turn the radio up a little if I heard it playing" kind of way.
My husband, who is probably the biggest Journey fan I've ever met, is going to hate it, I'm quite certain. He'll dismiss it with great disdain and contempt. He's kind of a purist like that.

Not bad.
Am I a bad person for being glad that since Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain wrote this song, THEY will get royalities from this version and Neal Schon will get NONE!?
I'm a little soured on Neal Schon these days. |

Yep, especially when you can read how when they recorded it originally for the Escape album in 1981, that Neal stood outside the studio and mocked Perry while he sang.

They have a done a good job but nothing can replace a song originally sung by S.P.
What has Neal Schon been doing lately that has caused some to feel 'soured'?

It was OK. It's hard to listen to anyone else other than STEVE PERRY sing that song. |

I finally got a chance to listen, and frankly, I hated it. It is over-vocalized and the breathing, WTH? When they sing the higher notes, his/their voice gets really thin. The arrangement sounds the same as SP's and Journey's.
I give a 1.7, only because they pointed their toes and stuck the landing.
That, and you should never mess with perfection.
And Neal Schon is such an asshole, I would download this version just to put $ in SP's and Jonathan Cain's pockets! |

And yet somehow Steve's the bad guy, because he said in the VH1 "Behind the Music" that he never felt truly a part of the band?? Well, I guess not, if you're being mocked by one of the main members. Jeesh.
Speaking of VH1 (or some totally different network??), I heard recently about 2 of Jonathan Cain's daughters being interviewed for a show? Shoot, I can't remember details now and I Googled with no results. Anyone else hear this? |

I saw part of this...I only saw one of his daughters. She was discussing how hard it is to break into the business, even being the daughter of Jonathan Cain. The funny thing is that she is a country singer and the whole family moved to Tennessee to support her. |
