My mom lives in Martinez and I live in Elk Grove. I'm driving to Martinez tonight for Thanksgiving. I was planning on driving back to EG on Friday morning since my mom has to work - we normally do the BF thing.

But, now I'm thinking about just driving back on Thursday night instead. From what I remember, the traffic on Friday can be pretty annoying, so I'm thinking there might be a lot less traffic on Thanksgiving night.

Does anyone drive to/from the bay area for Thanksgiving? What is traffic normally like on Thanksgiving night? I'd be taking 680 over the Benicia Bridge, then 80 to 99 south (or I-5 south).

Holiday traffic is a toss-up. Times we thought it would be good, it wasn't. Times we thought it would be bad, it wasn't. Thanksgiving is supposed to be the busiest travel day...

How early would you be heading home on Friday? What about fog? It's been foggy the last couple mornings; I'd think chances are it would be less foggy tomorrow night than Friday morning.

I used to do the drive from EG to Livermore and it wasn't too bad; traffic thru Tracy and that's about it. However, I don't know much about 680.

In the past, I've left on Friday around 1-3pm (after shopping all morning). What is normally a 70 minute drive took a little over 2 hours. I want to avoid that if possible as I hate sitting in traffic (not that anyone actually enjoys it).

But, I also don't want to have to wake up early and get on the road early just to beat traffic, which is why I'm thinking about driving back on Thursday. My mom has to leave for work at 8:45 on Friday, so if I stayed, I'd probably get on the road around 9am or so.

If I drive on Friday and it's not foggy, I'd possibly go through Antioch and the delta (hwy 12), but I won't drive that way at night or in any kind of weather.

I've not had a problem going out on Friday. I do the black friday thing as well, usually including the outlets in Vacaville.
The traffic can get bad if there are lots of people headed to the mountains on Friday but that should be early.
As for Thanksgiving night? Probably a bit less than Friday morning but you never can tell.

Enjoy your thanksgiving with your mom.

My concern would not be the traffic, but moreso possibility of fog at night - especially between vacaville and Davis or so coming across the rice fields.

Stay off 12...it is a fliping nightmare. There is a ton of construction on 12. I know the river road to Antioch gets backed up.

Former Vacan (Vacaville Resident) I'd go Thursday night myself, Friday morning traffic in and around the malls and shopping centers is horrible! (Fairfield Mall and the outlets in Vacaville espeically) If I had to go somewhere, I avoided I-80 and went backroads and surface streets.

I'm in Benicia ... please wave as you drive past on 680.

Can't tell about your direction, but I have driven home from my in-laws' in San Jose on many a Thanksgiving night (and Christmas Eve, too, for that matter) late-ish, nine or later, and never had the least bit of traffic trouble.
