I was just checking out the Nook online and it had a comparison between the Nook and the Kindle 2. It looks like the Nook won't read books aloud. I am looking at a gift for my parents who are getting older and I think that might be a good feature but I like the touchscreen on the Nook.

Thanks.

I can't answer your question, but I did want to make sure you know that the reading aloud that the Kindle does is not great, imo. It's very mechanical monotone speaking. You can choose male or female I think, but man is it dry and boring. I've tried a couple of times and I just can't get into it. If someone had trouble reading with diminishing eyesight, then it might be a useful feature but I wanted you to have a heads up just in case this was top selling point. BTW, I love my Kindle and would definitely recommend it.

Smiles,
Laura

I heard it can run your bubble bath, uncork the wine and shave your legs. But that's just a rumor.

No, it doesn't. I know the Kindle does but it's really bad. In fact, some university returned a bunch of them because the visually impaired people who were going to use them said the reading aloud function was awful....

ETA...lawsuit was that the navigation for read aloud is so crappy, visually impaired people need a seeing friend to navigate it.

You can listen to audio books (MP3 books) on both Kindle and nook. I don't think nook reads out loud though. I think you need to use an ear piece.

As others said, the plain reading of a book is going to be monotone. I believe you get to choose a female or male voice. It is not going to be like an audio book that is created for the purpose of an audio book.

Thanks. That helps. Well, not the bath and shaving legs part but the poor reading aloud of the Kindle. If they both do mp3 audiobooks, then that is fine. I think I am leaning toward the Nook. Based on the plusses I read on the other thread, it sounds like a good choice.

Would you buy it if it COULD run your bath? I think that would be a good feature.
