I left the beaters from our electric mixer in water overnight and there are a few small rust spots on the mixer. Is it safe to use?

Is it a fancy Kitchen Aid? If so, then absolutely not. You should send it directly to me to remove this bio-hazard from your home. Immediately. Danger Will Robinson.

It's fine. Wash it and go on.

Small spots? fine. Large rusted areas with crome plating peeling off - not ok. The chrome plating will get into the food you are mixing and ruin it. (I know from experience and having to throw out a batch of whipped cream full of metallic flakes).

I did scrub but the spots are still there. I am making cookies to take to a party, so wanted to get opinions. If it was just me eating the cookies I would not care. But I have higher standards when serving to others as I do not know any health issues they may have.

Sounds like it is safe, so off to make cookies!

I was just reading in Real Simple that you can use lemonade flavored Kool Aid to help get rid of rust spots. They were suggesting it for your patio if your lawn chairs left rust stains, but I imagine you could try it on your beaters. Cover the spots with Kool Aid and then scrub with a stiff brush. Rinse with water when the stain starts to fade, repeat as necessary.
