We're strongly considering making a switch to Straight Talk from ATT, simply to lower our wireless bill every month. I have talked to a couple of people locally who use it and really like it, and my SIL (in another state) and nephew use it as well, and also like it.
I am not concerned about "3G" service. we are in a rural area and most of the time don't even have a single "G" - so if the phone is not the latest and fastest it really won't be much different than we have now. HA!

My Mom used it for a year and liked it. It runs off of Verizon's network.

She only dropped it because she has dial-up internet access so I gave her my iPhone 3GS on AT&T and she took over my contract as it's faster to pay bills on the 3G network than her dial up internet service.

I had Tracfone and then Straight Talk (a Tracfone subsidiary) for several years. I never really experienced dropped calls or other problems. The biggest pain for me was when I needed to take my ST account off of auto-pay. Getting hold of a CSR whom I could communicate with was a bigger deal than it should have been. I ended up emailing the company and they sent me a phone number that connected to an American CSR.

(Their website will tell you that you can do auto-pay online and then undo it online as well. You can't.)

I'd recommend ST to anyone who doesn't mind not having all the bells and whistles, who only needs to make calls and text. (Their web capabilities, I never could figure out, so I guess that's a negative.)

My DH and I both use Straight Talk! The biggest problem for us was finding a phone that would work in our area. The first time we bought phones they wouldn't work well in our area...dropped calls all the time...etc.

I did some internet research and found that we needed a phone without a sim card. The model numbers were also different...ones with a C wouldn't work, but ones with a Z would. Using that as an example, as I can't remember all the specifics but we went to a neighboring town and purchased the phones, after returning the 2 that wouldn't work in our area. For some stupid reason, the phones our Walmart carries are different that those in the neighboring town's stores. Our Walmart was having a lot of phones returned so hopeful they will eventually get ones that work in our area.

We bought 2 slider phones that have internet capability. We mostly use ours for talking and texting so I'm not sure how fast the internet is on the phones.

We were able to transfer the original 2 phone cards to our new phones. I had to get a copy of the receipt from Walmart and call and email Straight Talk a couple times but we finally got it done!! The new phones work great!!! No problems with the service at all. I *think* some phones use Verizon which works great for us...and some of the phones use another network in our area.

I just found phones on-line, googled their model numbers to see what experiences people had. Took some research but I'm very happy with our choice!! We use the all you need $30 a mo. plan for each phone. My stepson does the unlimited for $45 a month.

I LOVE straighttalk. my son has been using it for about 4 months now.

the phone was easy to set up-you can pay every month by logging onto the site or set up auto pay. I actually stopped the auto pay because if my son loses or breaks his phone I can get a new one for free just by pre paying for one month of the service. he dropped his phone in the water last month and I did that and it worked very well-it was super easy to transfer his number to the new phone. the phones are also better quality (IMO)than other pre paid providers (my s/o bought a trac phone recently and the phone is a complete POS)

I couldnt be happier with straightalk so far

We switched to Straight Talk and love it. Have been using it for about 2 years now. We have great coverage, better than we had with Verizon. Didn't know it ran off of Verizon's network. That's weird because we have better reception and fewer dropped calls. I refill online every month. We have saved a lot of money. My husband gets the $30 refill, but I need the unlimited.

I use Straight Talk. I have no complaints. My bill is $32+ after tax, and I do auto pay. I ordered my phone from Walmart.com b/c online it included the first month of service free, and didn't in store.

There are 2 UPC codes or something like that. One indicates that it works on Verizon towers and the other works on AT&T towers. They let me know in store which one I needed for Verizon.

I love the keyboard for texting SO much more than my iPod. I've considered getting an iPhone, but can't justify the cost when my service has been so affordable for this phone. Plus, no contract and no confusing phone bills to figure out.

My husband has had it for a couple of years. It's related to TracFone somehow. (I have a TracFone.) He was happy with it until a couple of months ago. He's getting a lot of dropped calls in areas that used to have good service. My TracFone still works in those areas. He keeps calling them and they keep "resetting" the phone, but it still doesn't work in those areas. He's pretty frustrated with it. Maybe it is a phone issue?

I'm glad I found this thread. I've had TracFone for 8 years (2nd phone for over 3 years now) and it suits my needs. My DH needs to get rid of his Verizon phone, he is on with his brother. His phone is old, has to use older phone to charge batteries and he is paying a fortune because his brother won't do anything about changing the plan. Fortunately, they are month to month which means he can change at any time but unfortunately meant they never got a new phone.

Anyway, it is a business phone for DH and I've been looking at the Straight Talk at work since we seem to sell a fair amount of them. He doesn't even want or need the bells and whistles, just a phone that he can talk on! I do know it uses the Verizon tower like my TracFone does so hopefully he'll get the same good coverage. Maybe even better since he'll have a new phone WITH a good battery!

If anyone has any more things to say about Straight Talk, good or bad, please post to this thread!

I have been with Straight Talk for almost 2 years. I love it.

PROS:
Never had a dropped call
No surprises on a bill (And if it is a tighter month, I can do $30 instead of $45)
Purchase each month at WM or online (I don't do the auto refill)
Not stuck with one phone, I can buy a new one anytime I want
No contract

CONS:
Customer service is sometimes hard to understand on the phone
I get several emails reminding me I need to refill (not a huge deal, but a little annoying)

I use the internet at least once a day on my phone and while it took me a bit to figure out how to use it, now that I have it figured out, it's great! I have had the same phone the entire time I've been with them and it is SO durable. It has been baptized many, many times. It has been dropped, stepped on, and sat on. This phone is a dang trooper! I have one of the Samsung slider phones. I have recently been looking at what other phones are available, but only because I am getting a bit bored with the one I have, not because a new one is needed.

We use it amd like it, but whether they go through the verizon or ATT network depends on where you live.

Thanks for the extra info! I checked after one person mentioned they got a free phone and found out we can get a free reconditioned phone... "might" start out with that JUST to save a little at first. I do know here, they use the Verizon towers.

We LOVED Straight Talk service. We only switched recently b/c my parents offered to let us jump on their "friends" plan (or whatever it's called) with AT&T, so we pay even less now.

But for 2 years we had Straight Talk and loved it. Couldn't believe why people would have such expensive contracts when it was cheap and worked so well. We bought the minute cards at Walmart for awhile, then added our credit card to the plan so we would just be automatically billed each month. Worked great, and we had no complaints.

I say go for it!

If you buy your phone at a Walamrt store, you can purchase a replacement plan for it.
And, yes it works as advertised.
Keep your receipt though, just in case.

CS reps can be difficult to understand.
