We just got an automated phone call about Costco dog food being voluntarily recalled because of the Diamond salmonella issue...

The message said to stop using it immediately and return for a refund. We have a batch in a big bin - of course the lot and use by dates are long gone. I've got to go to Costco tomorrow... I guess I'll stop at the customer service desk and see if they will give me a refund.

Did they say which Costco dog food was being recalled? I bought some recently and did not get a phone call (yet).

It said Kirkland Signature. Dd's dog is on the Kirland Signature weight control food. I'm not clear if that one is included or not, and I haven't been able to find anything online yet. I'm going to ask at the customer service desk tomorrow morning.

Thanks for letting us know.

Kirkland Signature Super Premium Mature Dog Chicken, Rice & Egg Formula (Best Before December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013)

Kirkland Signature Nature's Domain Salmon Meal & Sweet Potato Formula for Dogs (December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013)

To determine if their pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production codes on the back of bags must have both a number "3" in the 10th digit and an "X" in the 11th digit. The best-before dates for the recalled brands listed are December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013.

The recall affects only products distributed in the following U.S. states, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Alabama
Connecticut
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Maryland
Massachusetts
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New York
North Carolina
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Tennessee
Vermont
Virginia
Canada
Puerto Rico

There is also a picture of the production code and Best Before Date on the site.

I don't remember when we last bought dog food, but my best buy is 25 JUL 2012, and we're not in one of the states listed so it looks like we're ok.

Thanks for this information! I just checked our bag, which is one of the ones on the list, but our date is March 31, 2013. So I guess we're okay.

Thank you for the link... I couldn't find anything online with details, so I'm glad you did!

I don't have the bags left anymore, but we've bought Kirkland dog and cat food in the last few weeks (I've decided that from now on we're going to cut the lot number and use by date off and tape them to the bins). Our state is in the affected area, so I'll be at Costco in the AM to see what they can do for me I hope they will be willing to give me a refund, even though I no longer have the bags, but either way, we'll be starting fresh with a new, Non-Diamond dog food.

Grr, I was afraid the recall was going to widen.

Carol, I was in the same boat with not having my bag. I hope that Costco will be easy to deal with. I hear good things about their customer service.

Does anyone know if there's a list of all the dog foods that are made at this South Carolina plant? I feed my dog Natural Balance and I need to buy food today, but I'm nervous now with how much this keeps widening.

Well crud! We have the Salmon & Sweet Potato variety. Off to check the bag. We've been using it for our insulin-dependent dog; I'll be crazy-mad if our bag is included in the recall.

Thanks so much for the information. We've heard nothing from Costco yet.

Shara

ETA: Checked our bag. The expiration date is 2/24/13 so I guess we're OK. Thanks again OP & others for the info.

DanniDee,

It gets very convoluted trying to find a definitive source of exactly who manufactures what. And it seems that often, the sources and lists don't match up. Here are some links I've found:

From wiki:

Diamond introduced Diamond Naturals in 2006. These products contain no by-products, corn, or wheat. They also manufacture Bright Bites brand dental treats, Taste of the Wild brand pet food, and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul brand dog and cat food.

They also manufacture under contract, for other companies, at least some of the pet foods sold under these brands or business names.

Canidae Pet Food
Costco's Kirkland Signature
Solid Gold Health Products for Pets
Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Pet Foods
Kirkland Signature Nature's Domain (Available only at Costco)
Taste of the Wild Pet Foods
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul
4Health (Available only at Tractor Supply Company)
NutraGold Super Premium Holistic Formulas

From The Pet Food List they no longer update the list, though, so there could be others

Foods manufactured:

Diamond
Kirkland Signature Brand Pet Food
Natural Balance
Solid Gold Health Food for Pets
Taste of the Wild
Wellness (not all)

The inability to find accurate information has driven me to cook for my dogs since all this started, and I tried to find answers. It would take me exponentially more time to track down accurate information and make an informed decision about what food to buy than it does just to bite the bullet and cook for them myself.

It doesn't seem like it's possible to get definitive, reliable information.

You could always try contacting Diamond and/or Natural Balance. It would be interesting to see what they tell you.

Thank you *foo*. I thought I had seen Natural Balance on a list somewhere. I've thought about trying to get into making my own food for him - but at 80+ lbs that's a lot of food to make and I think I'd struggle having the time to keep up with it. I may look into a little more seriously though. Do you have any link to recipes/diets that you use for your dogs?

I may try calling later just to see what they say. If I do, I'll post back.

Nicole, here's the PR response from the Diamond website:

I FEED CANNED FOOD. IS THAT RECALLED?
Canned food is not included in our recall. This voluntary recall only includes certain batches of dry pet food. There is no need for concern and you can continue to feed the canned food as usual.

DanniDee, I don't have any recipes yet (I've checked a couple of books out of the library) but I've just been cooking them chicken (mostly leg quarters-I just throw them in the crockpot with some water-it will make broth-then I debone the chicken) I started adding chicken liver () too (about 20% of the meat is liver/organ meat and the other 80% is the leg quarters) and then I mix all the cooked meat with cooked brown rice, some broth, and some sweet potato or pumpkin puree. They also eat a few frozen green beans each day as treats. And also a couple of frozen blueberries each.

I know what you mean about it being time consuming. My 3 dogs are 80 lb. combined (50-15-15). I've been cooking huge batches, dividing it up into smaller containers, and freezing it. Then each night, I just put a few of the frozen containers into the fridge to defrost so that I have a couple of days' worth of food ready to go.

For any Natural Balance folks - I just found this on Facebook of all places.

Dear NB Community, We have just been notified by one of our co-manufacturers Diamond Pet Foods, who was working with the FDA, that certain Natural Balance dry dog formulas produced in their Gaston, South Carolina facility should be voluntarily recalled. Although none of our Natural Balance products included in the recall have tested positive for Salmonella, we have decided as a precautionary measure to initiate a voluntary recall. To get the list of the 4 formulas affected, please visit our website http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/home/NB_recall.html to see if your product may be affected. Please call our Customer Service team at 800-829-4493 8am-5pm PDT or email info@naturalbalanceinc.com for more information or questions.

So, originally I thought my bag of Kirkland food wasn't included in the recall because the expiration date wasn't between the two dates listed. However, the recall list has been expanded (as someone mentioned here) so everyone who thinks you are *not* affected needs to go look at the complete list (someone also posted that link). My bag's expiration is March 2013 BUT the code has a 2X in the place where it says to look. And in fact, on the website it shows a sample label which actually has the March 2013 date on it. sigh...

I've just talked to my Costco and the gal who answered the phone said I have to bring the entire bag back -- meaning all the dog food! And we've just opened it. Which means I have to haul 40 pounds all the way back to the store? I wasn't too impressed with her phone skills so I think I'll be calling again to talk to someone higher up, or maybe to their headquarters. That seems silly to me. Anyway... just what I did not want to do on a Saturday, go to Costco.

I don't know how accurate the state list is. On the news last night they said that people in Ohio have been sick from handling the contaminated food. Ohio is not on that last posted above. They added that you need to wash your hands after feeding your dog, but that implies that you are feeding your dog potentially deadly food.

I've been keeping a close eye on this because I have a service dog and I can't have her out of commission, but I am very reluctant to change her food due to future bowel problems.

thanks for posting that info; whew! we're not in one of the affected states. (and that's a good idea, about keeping the lot number info-- we put ours into a big bin, also.)
But some distributors in unaffected states may get it from suppliers in the affected states. We can't check ours as it's in a bin and we don't have the bag, but it's almost gone and we've switched to Earthborn Holistic. We're mixing the last of the Diamond food with the new food.

We went to Costco today and talked to the folks at the customer service desk. I told them I had already discarded the bags, but had cat and dog food impacted by the recall in bins. They told me just to bring "some" in and she pointed to a kitchen trash bag that looked like it was about 1/2 full of food and said that would be fine, but they did need me to bring at least some of it in.

I'll stop by next week and return some of each and get my refund. Fortunately, dd's dog (who was eating the Kirkland food) doesn't seem to mind having her food changed, so we went back to BilJac... the cats don't mind having their food changed, either.

Piper, my westie, is the one with the sensitive system, but she is on a completely different food (Now!).

Our two little dogs were eating the diet food a little over a month ago and they got deathly sick. Luckily they are okay. We reported it to Costco and they did give us our money back for the food, but we want to know who will pay for the vet bill. Oh, and we're in California and they are not on the state list.

I just purchased a new bag several weeks ago and have been religiously following the updates with any additional information. As of now, no my bag isn't involved is fine. Thankfully our malamute is not experiencing anything out of the ordinary either. I'm not sure though as it seems additional details are released (first the X I believe now the 2X)... Just like the last recall, I sit here and think perhaps we'll try with an alternative diet. Not necessarily raw but my boy is 160lbs, need to research more.

Honestly this is just awful and I suspected as another pea mentioned that more brands would be affected besides just Diamond when this began. So scary!
