A few years ago, DH & I noticed product shrinkage in paper towels, pizza crusts, etc., & were irritated. For crying out loud, this is insulting; it implies that we don't notice that the pizza crust doesn't cover the pan any more! Just raise the prices a few cents! But, no....

It just kept getting worse. Stouffers Meatloaf--used to provide 6 slices, went to 5, then 4. Same with their turkey. How is somebody supposed to plan a meal, for crying out loud?

Tonight, it reached a peak. The old joke of "Why do they make hot dogs in packs of 8 & buns in packs of 10?" is about to become even more ludicrious....The package of Hebrew National Hot Dogs that we grilled tonight had not 8, but 7 in the package.

As harried as we all are in these hectic times, do we really need to have to be looking at the label of every product package that's contained the same number of items since forever now to see if we can still feed our family with one package of it?

True, for the "legal record," the packaging reflected the contents correctly. But, I ask you, do you want to have to read the packaging of every product to determine what the &$@#$@# shrinkage might have been since last week?

Me neither.

Seems this isn't a rare incident, either, per this article:
Shrinking sizes
Anybody else noticing this & ticked off?

As long as I can remember, ten plus years, Hebrew National packs have come with 7 dogs. Hebrew National and Nathans are the ONLY brands I buy.

yeah Hebrew National hotdogs have always(or at least for many years) only had 7 in the pack, Ive never understood it

boars head hot dogs with natural skin come in packs of 7 too.. only thing is they are the best hotdog Ive ever ate---but its the price that makes me hesitate at about $8 a pack. they are certainly a *treat* kind of splurge

but yeah it makes me mad when they change the amount in a package.. lots of bags of sugar now are only 4lbs.look at how many ice cream packages are not half gallon anymore . coffee packages have shrank too--and now Folgers has a new shaped bottle for some of their coffee, yeah I just betcha it has less in it than it used to, I dont buy coffee, but I do work as a cashier in a grocery store and customers are always mad about that type of thing lol.. amounts of cereal in boxes has gone down too.

Hebrew National has always had only 7 in the package - or at least for a long, long time. They are the only brand I buy and I have long marveled at who decided on 7.

I assume 7 must be a special number for Jews so of course I had to look it up. Otherwise, 7 would make no sense whatsoever. It is an important number in Judaism.

Hebrew National has had only 7 for as long as I can remember. I fussed about it the day when I was comparing brands. It was in a predominately Jewish area and a lady explained it as something related to Judaism. I don't remember her exact words. I bought Nathan's instead

She is correct that there are less dogs in the package. They went from 7 to 6. I usually cook the whole package and give the spare one to the dog. He was very dissapointed when we last had hotdogs. I thought I was going nuts till I found an old package in my freezer with 7 dogs in it. Gotta check the amounts on everything these days. .sigh.

That annoys the crap out of me, too. I notice almost every time i buy something these days. The latest is my favorite hairspray. I noticed it was quite a bit more, bought it anyway, then when I put it on the shelf in the bathroom, next to the old one, the bottle was so much skinnier. Still as tall, but not as big around same. Have you noticed cereal boxes? They look the same from the front of the box, but the box is thinner.

It's so annoying. What really sucks is when you have a recipe that you've used for years that calls for say a 16 oz. can of whatever, and you notice that the can is now only 14 oz.

I have only bought Hebrew Nationals for probably over 15 years and they always have 7 in them (which I always thought was weird).

I just bought Domino Sugar and the bag is FOUR lbs instead of five now.

The only thing I have noticed is the sugar that someone else already pointed out.

I don't buy any of the items you mention, so I don't have a chance to notice anything about those.

I also know the ice cream brands in the stores are smaller, but that happened a few years ago. But we have gotten into the habit of purchasing it from a local dairy instead, and theirs are still the same size.

We always buy Hebrew National dogs because they are so good, not for the number in the package. If you need 8 then buy 2 packages and have left overs. Win, win.

As for amounts of packaging being reduced it's how companies survive in the economic situation we all are in. It might also reflect smaller families today. But in order to make those changes in amounts the company had to re-tool which was likely an expensive change. They had to weigh changing sizes vs. charging more for the product.

I don't buy hot dogs but the one that kills me is the width of toilet paper! Northern Quilted has just down-sized AGAIN! I was the first to mention this on 2 peas when they first width reduction took place & one pea said it was just my ass getting bigger, LMAO!

Nope my ass is the same size but the TP has gotten EVEN SMALLER! I took a square to Target yesterday to compare all brands & bought 2 new ones that are at least 1/4 inch wider than the square of Q.N. I took.

I agree that I would rather pay more for the same size TP. At this rate we'll be able to put two rolls side x side on the dang holder.

I think we all realize that. What I have a problem with is the way they do it so "sneakily." Like keeping the packaging the same size but putting less product in. Or making it so that from the shelf, it looks the same, but then you realize that it's skinnier than normal. AND while doing this smaller deceptive packaging, still raising the prices.

I do agree with you about product 'shrinkage' (although I do have to admit, it IS a bit funny, that you're discussing shrinkage with wieners!)

and I have no idea what to do about it, on the whole- this is one of the things that gets my boyfriend literally up in arms (along with gas prices)... but I do wonder, what can we, as consumers, do about it, besides refusing to buy the products- and that's only if we happen to notice that they're charging us more for less, before we buy them??

And if it's a trend across many products- which it seems to be- then do we have ANY recourse, because we have to buy food SOMEwhere!! So what WOULD get the manufacturer's attention?? anything??

Well, I didn't take any toilet paper squares to the store to compare, but I did notice that I seem to buy more TP than ever lately, so perhaps that's why.

So I'll add that to the sugar as items I have noticed a difference in lately.

YES! I was just going to post about this. I noticed when all the brands downsized a while back, but I bought QN last week and its even smaller now!
Poptarts are another item that keeps getting smaller. The box and the pouch are the same size but the actual pastry is much smaller than it used to be.

I agree with this. I think doing this smaller packaging and still raising the prices is a little deceptive. It really sneaks up on the consumer and often goes undetected, unless you still have the old product/packaging to compare the items.

I noticed the beginning of the packaging downsizing in coffee cans. They used to be "1 lb" cans and now many brands are 13, 14 or 15 oz. and at a higher price.

I also noticed it when reading/using some of my mother's old recipes. The recipes call for "a one lb. can" of vegetables, such as beans, corn or beets. The canned vegetables I buy now are 14-1/2 or 14-3/4 oz. It's really hard to tell the size difference visually.

Yes, I know why they are doing it. But, I feel it makes price comparison a little tougher, plus I don't believe I've ever seen an ad where the companies come out and say "same product, just a smaller amount".

The whole packaging down-sizing really keeps me on my toes during grocery shopping!

I thought I was crazy about toilet paper. I don't think it's just Northern, either. And I have definitely noticed that pop tarts are smaller. Actually, I didn't, because I don't eat them, but my kids have pointed it out to me. You know it's smaller when KIDS notice. LOL

I bought a regular size package of Reese's cups at the gas station the other day, and while the package looked exactly the same, the cups seem teeny tiny compared to what they used to be. It was the first time in a long time I've bought them, and I shouldn't have been surprised, yet I was. And again, the price...

The problem is most companies are charging more and still downsizing thier product.

The product that bothers me is bacon. You used to buy bacon by the pound. Now it is mostly sold in 12oz packages.

And THAT is why manufacturers do it. They know that we won't notice little incremental changes. And even if we do, what can we really do about it? We can't stop buying food. All we can do is rant and vent about it on the internet and it makes us feel better.

I noticed it with pasta. The boxes I buy used to be a pound. Now it seems like they are more like 12 oz. That's a HUGE cut!

Food prices are killer these days. I feel so darned bad for people just squeeking by. Particularly those with teenagers. This has to be really hurting them.

I don't mean to bring down a funny thread, but I think I'll make a donation to our local food pantry.

And those 12 ounce packages cost more than a pound used to. A lot more--not just a few cents.
