This show seems a bit off to me for some reason. I just googled, "is Breaking Amish fake" and found some interesting speculations.
First is that Rebecca and Abe have a baby together.

It's speculated that Jeremiah is divorced with kids.

link

I understand that this is all speculation and that reality TV is far from reality. But this show is far from a bunch of sheltered, uneducated Amish kids off to see the real world that is't portrayed to be.

I watched it at first but then saw some comments like the one's you posted on here. It makes sense that it's fake. How'd they just happen to wind up New York together and also how do they pay for everything? Seems like they go out a lot!

I watch it as background sometimes now but with a skeptical outlook.

Holy crap!!!!! Abe and Rebecca have a baby. And this is obviously before the show as she has teeth!!!! Seems had bad teeth so she got dentures for the show. I always thought her original dentures looked really good when she claimed they were made by someone with no dental training.

The sad thing for TLC is that this is a great idea for a tv show. But then again maybe they couldn't get any devoted Amish kids to do the show and this is their alternative.

I agree that it's a good idea but they way they went about it all wrong. It's going to make any credibility (and I use that word loosely with this channel) they had go by the way side.

Its a total fake.

Rebecca and Abe have a child together (theoretically)
Jeremiah is divorced with 3 children (theoretically)
Kate has an online modelling profile that was set up in 2010 (theoretically)

They are denying these things but there is plenty of evidence online. Court documents of the marriage and divorce, photos, etc.

Mostly it's just a silly message board. Except when it isn't.

Were they all raised Amish or Mennonite? I didn't see that mentioned in the article. Maybe I missed it. I thought the story line of Kate and her DUI was very farfetched. But the rest I totally fell for.

I watched the first few episodes and it didn't seem to be too true to being Amish for me. They used words that I didn't think a sheltered Amish person would use let alone even know!

I think it's one of the most unreal reality shows ever. I can't believe that TLC was so sloppy with this. I did some digging into sites that have claims about how this is a farce. I am from Lancaster County and I don't buy for a minute that Kate was really Amish. ALL the Amish around here have a very distinct dutchy accent and Kate doesn't even have a hint of one. If the online modeling profile from 2010 is really Kate she would have an Amish last name, but there are many people here with that same last name who are no longer Amish. I suspect that her parents left the church maybe before Kate was even born.

One site I found pointed out that the show must have been filmed at different times because in one scene there is a restaurant that closed almost 2 years ago and in another scene there is an advertisement for a fairly recent movie in the background.

Interesting picture of Rebecca with bad teeth. When she was describing how her teeth were pulled I was very sceptical. I think the Amish go to the dentist. Maybe some don't, but I don't think I believe the story of how all her teeth were pulled.

I think Rebecca and Abe were Amish. They have the accent and look. Another thing that gives Kate away as never being Amish is she referred to having OCD. No way would a young Amish girl know what OCD is.

Didn't Rebecca just get her new teeth? In that pic it looks like her teeth are crooked? Old picture?

I dont think they were just off the farm for sure. I just removed it from my DVR this last week.

Does anyone remember the show in 2004 called "Amish In The City"? That show I really believe was real and I loved it. It followed Amish that were going through rumspringa where they can decide to stay with the Amish faith or leave. They lived in an apartment with several city kids. THAT seemed authentic. If you ever saw the national geographic's version Mose on there was in Amish In The City. One of my favorite shows even years later. I love learning about the Amish culture. I am sad that this is fake. I agree that it was great in theory but I bet they, too, could have found some going through rumspringa and followed them. And it looked like Kate had a DUI from earlier when she was in Florida.

Read the book Growing Up Amish. It is awesome. The author is a young man who grew up Amish in Canada, and his family later left and moved to the USA. He talks about courting a girl and all the rules...getting his first buggy and horse...family life. He leaves the faith and returns. He doesn't like being Amish, but being English is a real challenge, and he misses his family. It is a really good book...and a far better look at Amish life than this "reality" show.

We have a lake house in the middle of Amish Country. We hire many Amish men to do odd jobs around the place. They almost all have phones at the end of their driveways. My neighbor has an Amish cleaning lady. She brings her young son. He sits and watches tv while she cleans. This religion is probably getting harder and harder to keep their young people.

PS. In the book (above), the author mentions that the Amish do not really have a Rumspringa where the youth can leave. He didn't know of any sect that did that.

I love this show and I'm upset it's fake. I looked at the link and all it shows are pictures set up from years ago. But don't movies and TV show tape months, even years before they air?

Yea I was watching it too and noticed the terms and slang they were using. Rebecca even said she hated being around drunk people. The Amish don't drink so don't know where that came from. Also, setting Rebecca and Abe up on first dates when they already had the baby, weird. Did she also notice Rebecca's hair, it was dyed before she left New York.

Don't like Kate or Jeremiah. Both seem like trouble and Sabrina is not bad but I did see a wedding picture of her online.

This show is just a bunch of lies. Do you think that is really Abe's family or Amish actors? Don't most Amish prefer not to be on film?

I haven't watched the show. I thought from the previews that it looked "off". The accents in the previews didn't seem right to me. I wondered if the kids were really Mennonite instead of Amish. Near the area I grew up there were both Amish & Mennonite communities. The Amish spoke Pennsylvania Dutch at home so their accents were different when speaking English.

Growing up in an Amish Community of Lancaster, PA, working in the osteopathic hospital that treated the local Amish, having worked for a Mennonite owned company, and having a Mennonite bridesmaid in my wedding, I am completely turned off by this show. It is obviously using poor actors to portray someone's idea of what the Amish are like.

Some of the actors may have once been part of an Amish or Mennonite community, but it has been a long time and they have forgotten anything they ever knew.

There was a show several years ago called 'Amish in the City' that was much more believable. This show is everything the Plain people reject about the 'English.' The fact they are being portrayed in this manner is really insulting on so many levels.

I hope this show goes the way of Kate Plus 8, another Lancaster County based show that was on TV way beyond any reason.

I watched just one episode and wondered where all the money they were spending came from.

And another thing, the girl of Hispanic heritage goes into apply for a job and gets taken out by the restaurant owners for a shopping spree and to have her hair and nails done?

I'm not buying any of it.

But then this contradicts the first show?

Just went to the show's website and clearly they bleached Rebecca's hair for the show so she's not fresh off the farm as they lead you to believe in her dress.

Some Amish drink. I used for work for an 'English' man who sold Amish furniture. One of the furniture makers would come to his house a few times a year. The first thing he did was hit the liquor cabinet!

Some definitely drink. My cousin was driving through an intersection last year and got broadsided by a horse and buggy that ran the red light. The man at the reins was schnockered and fell asleep at the wheel (tail?) Horses are smart, but apparently not smart enough to know that red lights mean stop on their own.

It would've been hysterically funny (ok, i might laugh every time I think about it) but it was a pretty bad day for Chad- Amish travel the roadways but aren't required to carry auto/buggy insurance.

Some Amish have rumspringa. But for the most part the kids just do stuff locally, like mix English clothes with their own, smoke, drink and hang out. I have posted before that on a Saturday afternoon at the local Hardees you can see Amish teens in their garb wearing leather jackets and smoking; boys and girls together. They don't go off to a big city because they don't have the resources to do it. Yes, Amish families can be well off financially, but they don't give their kids money to go screw off in Philly or NYC. The kids know that their families need them to help out at home as well. So after chores are done the teens will go hang out.

I grew up in an area with a lot of Amish. My next door neighbors, babysitters and playmates were an Amish family. They most definitely DO have rumspringa. The craziest parties I ever attended in my late teens/early 20s were field parties thrown by Amish.

I don't specifically remember any teens leaving and going far away but you would occasionally hear of a couple guys getting an apartment/rental of some sort for a while. It was quite common to go visit family in other states for periods of time in hopes of meeting others.

I don't remember that. I know at one point they stated that they knew *of* Kate because she was from a neighboring district but had not met her previously.

My first clue something was "off" was when they had them fly from Lancaster to NYC. It's only a 3 hour drive.

I have heard of it often as well. I'm just saying what the author wrote. He was in a very conservative sect...but he wrote that they weren't as conservative as the Lancaster Amish. Interesting.
