I hope this show is fake or staged. I was watching Breaking Amish because I love learning about different religions and cultures. That was interesting to me. But I made the mistake of watching a clip for Extreme Cheapskates. One does her laundry in the shower with her so she doesn't have to pay to wash her clothes. She doesn't use toliet paper either. Another one pees in jars and dumps it in her back yard rather than paying to flush the toliet by a higher water bill.

I'm frugal but that's nuts.

I do have a friend who's dad keeps a bucket in the tub so when you run the water to warm it up for a shower, it catches the water and they use it to water the garden.

My grandmother kept a garden going during water rationing using this method. Someone actually turned her in assuming she was breaking the rules to keep the garden watered (they lived on base overseas at the time).

I don't think it's weird- the garden doesn't know the difference between shower water and hose water.

I keep a bucket by the shower and tub too and use it to water the pots on our deck right outside my room -- because I hate to waste water. I also try to catch water from the kitchen sink and I throw it in the garden.

See to me a bucket in the tub makes sense. Washing your clothes in said bucket while you shower equals WEIRD!

We had quite strict water restrictions up until recently and lots of people were doing this because we were not allowed to water our gardens using a hose or sprinkler.

Not using toilet paper and peeing in a jar is just gross!

I thought it was just gross. Dude, really. I mean, saving money is great, but really? Even Franciscan monks have clean clothes. They're pretty frugal.

Well after Kate Plus too many and a wack husband, Honey Boo Boo and the fake Amish they had to do something to top those train wrecks. My guess is this is made up. If they're that cheap, I doubt they have tv, much less cable. How'd they know about the show?

wow. i don't know what water prices are like where she lives, but in our township it cost us $9 extra to fill up our 13000 gallon pool with our hose (yes, it took several days with breaks lol). there's no way peeing in a jar to save a fraction of a penny would be worth it to me!

Maybe a family member or friend nominated them.

The same one that washes her clothes in the shower doesn't use toilet paper. She uses her hand and some soap. I read that doing all of that only saved her about $6.00/month. Totally not worth it to me. I will not be watching that show.

It never ceases to amaze me what people will watch on tv. I am all for being frugal but that is just disgusting. No problem with using shower water for plants. I wouldn't do that as I would just end up ruining our carpet carrying it down the stairs.

Are these people really so poor that they can't afford to flush their toilet? I won't be watching that is for sure.

Seriously, the woman that won't buy toilet paper should just buy and install a bidet. That way she can rinse off with that, and then just pat dry with a washable towel. I have to imagine that is more sanitary (and less stinky) than using just her hand.

Wouldn't washing your clothes in the shower just make the shower take longer and use more water?

I thought I read an article that the woman that doesn't use toilet paper uses a bottle with soap and water to pour on herself after going.

Isn't that show "My Weird Addiction" on TLC? Those commercials grossed me out.

Won't their electric bills increase with the cost/use of the cameras and lighting that will be used to do the filming? Seems like a lot more than a few buckets of water and some hand sanitizer!

I saw an episode where a man would take other people's leftovers at a restaurant. He and his wife were out for their anniversary and she begged him not to do it but he did so she left out of embarrassment. He also gave her used cards and gifts. There was also a woman who used cloth toilet tissue. So when they were done they just put it in. A bucket next to the toilet. I guess that is better than your hand.

I couldn't watch that show, it would drive me nuts.

Saving water in the buckets reminded me of one of my college professors, (and don't ask me how she got on the subject, it was a psychology class).

She said she had a bucket underneath the bathroom sink to catch all the soapy water and she would use the water to wash her pantyhose. I was like at the time.

I have always thought there should be a way (some invention) to save the shower water.. I hate to see it go down the drain.. I think my husband would have a stroke if I started to do that.. I can see his face now.. LOL

I wouldn't do that but I did make my own cloth baby wipes and diapers.

"I have always thought there should be a way (some invention) to save the shower water.. I hate to see it go down the drain.. "

There is. I use a 5 gallon bucket in the shower to catch any run off and water from while it's warming up. Then I water my yard with it.

I started doing this 20 years ago when we were on water rations. Not because I'm an extreme cheapskate.

But it does save a noticeable amount on my water bill.

I should mention though that we take two to three showers a day each

We sat next to a couple at a restaurant that were already through eating when we got there. The restaurant was fairly busy and people were coming and going rather quickly but we noticed that this couple just sat and talked and kept getting cola refills.

DH did a double take when he noticed that as a family or group left the woman would lean over and rake their leftovers into a ziplock bag. New bag for each plate she raked off. I really thought DH was going to hurl. He really looked like this !!

Saving household water for outdoor purposes make a lot of sense to me. Especially if you live in an area that typically restricts watering yards & gardens, or refilling pool.

Unused, but typically wasted water (like when waiting for hot water) can be tossed into the pool. And water from boiling pasta or steaming vegetables can be used on plants.

We used to do those things as kids. (Combined with my mother reminding us not to "Splash all of the pool water out of the pool! We can't refill it!" all summer long. )

When we were house hunting, one house we looked at had a grey-water system set up from the laundry room to outside to water the lawn. They aren't uncommon here where it's so dry.

I remember the special they did on it 6ish (?) months ago, didn't know it was becoming a series.

The guy in the special would go to a restaurant and go around asking if other people were done with their food and took it in a to-go box if they said yes! Another used cloth toilet paper and reused them. The guests that came to their house weren't very comfortable lol.
