I'm down to the wire. It's time to make decisions about our big kitchen appliances.

I have:

White shaker-style cabinetry.
Dark brown laminate flooring
A light granite, tan with flecks of chocolate brown
tan walls

Looks a lot like this, actually, but with dark flooring. It's open to the rest of the house.

But what I love about that kitchen is that it's warm, and welcoming. I'm debating switching from SS appliances to white ones, just to keep that warm feeling. I'm worried all the SS will make it too "industrial" and take away that warmth.

Yes? No? Am I crazy? Feel free to share.

I think white would be your best choice, so it'll blend it and have the same feel as the rest of the kitchen. But I'm not crazy about SS appliances (I prefer black), so take my opinion how you want.

I prefer white appliances over stainless steel any day, so I personally would totally go with white.

can you get panels to make the appliances match the cabinets? that might be a solution.

i think any of these options would be a good one.

i probably prefer SS over white. (i have black.) : )

I would also go for paneled appliances. A local cabinet shop can make the doors match your kitchen. I'm not a fan of white appliances, but I know these days they have some with glossy smooth-textured doors as opposed to the old style.

Yeah, I don't love white appliances, either, which is what is holding me back. I prefer the SS, but I worry that it will ruin the feel of the kitchen.

Don't know about paneled covers. I would expect those to cost a bit, and we're pulling out all the stops to keep costs down, so I don't know. And can those be removed and added to a different appliance if we have to replace, say, a dishwasher?

I am not a fan of SS at all unless they are commercial. My first choice would be paneled. That is a beautiful kitchen. It looks familiar to me because one of my friends pinned it as her dream kitchen.

Is getting custom faces for the appliances an option, so they match your cabinets?

I can understand not wanting to put stainless in there, but I think white appliances will not look right either.

Have you looked into the brushed finish for the stainless? It looks a little warmer than the regular shiny stainless...it also hides fingerprints! I'm not sure how widespread it is in appliances but I did see a few refrigerators in that finish when we were looking for a backup fridge for our basement a few years ago.

I would definitely go with white. IMO SS is too modern and industrial a look to go with that kitchen. Also, it would be different enough that the appliances would stand out and almost become a focal point in the room. Not what I would choose as focal point in my kitchen.

Go with white appliances. If you can afford the panels go with them. I have white appliances (wall ovens and dishwasher) but my fridge has the panels so it looks like the cabinets. It always confuses people. Where's your fridge? SO you can do a combo to keep down costs.

I went with appliances that are panelled with the same wood as my cabinets. Sometimes if your cabinetry isn't the same bright white as the appliances they can stand out. Your kitchen sounds lovely.

I think it's so interesting how trends change. I remember 10 or so years ago when we used to love to go look at model homes in upscale neighborhoods, and the appliances were always white. When we built our hous 18 years ago, it cost extra to have white appliances.

Yes, and 15 years ago when we built our first house, we paid extra for bisque appliances. Trends are so cyclical, aren't they?

Maybe I just need to pick what I like best and go with it.

That's my theory.

What's 'in' changes so often & I refuse to chase trends.

We bought white appliances & I absolutely love them. Well, except the refrigerator, but it's not the color that I don't care for. Anyway, I'm sure they are about to bite the dust, as they are almost 18 years old. (We've only had to replace the microwave.)

I'm bummed as the only dishwashers that I've found, that have the features I want, are SS. I don't care for SS.

This.

My kitchen is pretty similar to this one except I have a mix of cabinet finishes, white and wood, and I have SS and it looks awesome. I do have one of my dishwashers paneled.

See how the cooktop is stainless? Do you think that detracts? I would go for a mix of stainless and paneled. All paneled would be boring, IMO, without any mixture of cabinet finishes.

But I should throw out there that I love SS and I despise white appliances. I would chose black over white...or any color except *maybe* the avocado I grew up with...

I do see, and I don't think it detracts, but that's a very small part of the whole kitche,n. You throw in a fridge, dishwasher, micro, and maybe a double wall oven, and that's a lot more SS, and in the size of the kitchen I have, that makes it more of a 50/50 mix of SS and white cabinetry. Will I like that, or no?

That's the part I'm not sure about.

Got it. I can see why you might worry if you are not sure SS is your thing...I think the best of both worlds is some SS and some paneling like I said, but it is an expense. I personally love the look and think SS adds, so I guess it really just matters what *you* like! Either way, I'm sure your kitchen will be lovely!

I 'stole' an idea out of This Old House magazine for my kitchen. My cabinets are "Tiffany Blue" (which was unintentional as I had intended to have them a shade or so darker, but I got the same color name) and there is white subway tile for the backsplash and a dark wood bamboo countertop (the last two are not done yet, but soon). The appliances are mixed right now, as it looks like the previous owner replaced the fridge to SS, but the stove/micro/dishwasher still worked fine so they are white. We'll be replacing them all to SS. I don't feel that it took aware from the charm at all according to the photos and SS is what is in my 'inspiration' photo.

The cabinets are a bit brighter blue though....

Digi, I'm reading the same thing.

Angel, LOVE that blue! If only DH would accept color in his neutral little world. He's like Switzerland...lives in neutral territory only. But I like the SS accents!

Guess I'll spend the weekend pricing cabinet fronts and checking out the glossy white appliances to see what I like best.

Thanks for all the opinions, Peas!

I have a ss dishwasher and a white fridge. I think the white appliances in that photo look marvelous but they are super high end. If you're going with normal big box stock - the white appliances won't look that nice. White gets dirty. My white fridge is textured and hard to clean. I would NOT choose it (it came with the house). If I were you, I would go with SS. It will look high end, modern, and clean whereas I think the white would look cheap and get dirtier easier.

I've seen the "new white" appliances (the Miele ones are out of this world gorgeous!), but I actually think they look even more modern and cold than SS. I personally would not put them in a kitchen that looks as warm and inviting as yours will be. I love the new glossy white ones, I really want them, but I would definitely design a whole clean, stark, modern kitchen to go with them. If I had your kitchen I would go with SS, because traditional white appliances might be hard to match up with the white cabinets.

Pick what you like best! My personal preference is stainless, I can understand why you are considering white, but I think the stainless will be a better fit, as others have mentioned, matching the whites can be a problem.

I think appliance color is something you will never get a concensus on. Some people love it and some people hate it. Personally, I don't like it at all unless it is in a very modern looking kitchen. My MIL remodeled her kitchen a few years ago. She put a small fortune into it and chose high end cabinetry and SS appliances. We all hate that kitchen... it looks so much colder and industrial than the old one. But she loves it, and that is what matters.

I love the look of SS and I think I always will, esp with painted cabinetry. In our last house we had white appliances, oak cabinetry, white countertops, white tile and light neutral walls ( trend at the time, plus I wanted to be able to "change" my color scheme easily). I think that helped sell our house very quickly at 10 years old. Except, the new owners wanted to personalize it and installed black appliances, painted the cabinets black, installed wood floors and very modern light fixtures, and painted it lime green! At least what we had fit the semi-country style of the house, now it looks like two very distinct styles (they had left the rest of the house colors...browns, reds, and yellows) the same.

My recommendation is to go with what you like, regardless of the trends, since your appliances will likely outlast them. FWIW, all of our appliances are cabinetry paneled except our range and fridge. We could paint or refinish our cabinets and most of the appliances would still blend in.

White Does not add warmth. White dishwashers are just plastic panels.

Cabinet paneled or SS.

The conversation with DH last night ended with us choosing SS, and paneling the dishwasher. I think that will leave a slightly cleaner, warmer look but still won't cost us a fortune.

Thanks for all the great perspectives, Peas! It really helped us look at this from all angles.

I wish that there were more available options for appliance colours...my vote would be for a good rich chocolate brown colour! I think if it was not the trendy colours of the 60s/70s it would work so well in so many kitchens-white too stark, black too black, stainless too modern, panelled not the style of choice..brown would be great. Anyway...I know that this does not help at all...just really makes no sense to have such limited options.

Have you heard of the White Ice finish that some manufacturers are offering on their higher end appliances?

I just read about it this week: White Ice Appliances

ETA: Just saw that you ultimately decided on SS for most of your appliances. Our kitchen is similar to the kitchen you posted pictures of and all of our appliances are stainless. It's a pain to clean, but I really like the contrast between the warmth of the rest of the room and the steel.

Post pictures of this gorgeous kitchen once it's done!
