I lost access to all the computers I did have my iTunes account authorized for in a break up. I have a new to me laptop and have loaded iTunes onto it. I was at the five computer limit, so I deauthorized all the computers and then authorized the current laptop. I transferred all of my purchases from my phone onto iTunes, I can see them all. Since then I've uploaded (not bought from iTunes) a few songs to iTunes and can't transfer them to my phone. Just to see what would happen, I went into the iTunes store and downloaded a free app. I can see it in my apps in my library, but it won't let me drag and drop it onto my phone, either. I checked the properties of the songs I uploaded and they are showing as MPEG4, same as everything else on there is showing. Any suggestions? The main reason I wanted a new laptop is so I could add new songs to my phone! Please help.

iPods are a one way street. Down only, computer--> device.

If the music was purchased from iTunes you can re-download all of it by going to the iTunes Store on your computer and looking in the right hand menu bar. I think it's called restore purchases.

If it was ripped/otherwise acquired, you're out of luck.

There are programs you can use to transfer music (and video) from your iphone to your computer, and then you can add it to itunes. I think the one I've used is by a company called cucusoft but I'm sure there are others. Maybe some free ones too.

one of the lovely limiting features of apple products.

I'm trying to go from computer to device. I downloaded a new app in iTunes on my computer and I can't drag and drop it to my phone. I uploaded songs from my computer into iTunes on the computer and can't drag and drop them onto my phone.

Check your iTunes settings on your computer. It may not be set to sync everything you want synced.

I'm not trying to sync everything, though. I just want to drag and drop individual songs or apps like I've done in the past. And I'm doing it the way I've always done in the past. Do I still have to set up sync options?

FTR, this isn't the only problem I'm having with my phone, but the first that I'm having with the iTunes involvement of it.

Have you synced the phone to the computer with iTunes?it will wipe the phone clean, but you have to do this ice before the phone will accept any content from this computer.

Gale, the limitation Apple has regarding transfer offices relates to DRM rules put in place by the recording industry, not Apple.

Do you have an Apple store near you? That would be my suggestion, if you do. Those people at the Genius Bar are really geniuses. lol.. Or at least, they're nice people -- because they never make me feel like I'm stupid (which I am when it comes to technology stuff.)

(hijack) Thank You ratqueen!!!!! When I got a new pc and tried to set DH's ipod on it, itunes wiped out my ipod, 2000+ songs lost! Per your recommendations, I was able to fully restore my ipod the way it used to be! It's been a year since I've been able to use it, I am SO THRILLED to have it back!! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!

MP3 files I buy from amazon can easily be transferred from my android phone to my computer and back. No special software required. In fact, the same is true for songs bought from itunes (my dd buys a lot) that are converted to mp3 in itunes. It's just the proprietary mp4 format and iphone/ipod that makes it a pain. I think it's super annoying that if you have songs on your ipod, and you want to transfer them to a new computer, you can't. DD tried and it gave her the 'everything on your ipod will be deleted' message.

. I have synced it, didn't wipe my phone, but still can't add to it.

I think it's just my phone deteriorating. Just adds to the list of problems. I think the Apple Bar is my only hope.

Thanks.

Even stranger. Hooked up an old phone that's just being used as a Touch, transferred purchases from the phone to computer, but can't transfer from computer to phone.

Hooked up my OLD Classic that I rarely use. Transferred purchases from the iPod to the computer, but this time I CAN drag and drop from the computer to my iPod. Weird, but at least I have the songs that I wanted to listen to in the car, just not the way I wanted to.

I have always used iTunes and i've never had a problem with the mp4 format, I move songs that I've purchased from various places or uploaded to my computer from CDs back and forth from my phone/iPod and even between my husband's phone and other computers - perhaps it's a setting issue, but I've not had an issue and don't get why people have such a hard time with iTunes, I hate trying to format and move music on various players with various programs, I find it so much easier to use iTunes, it's not really that bad if you sit down and learn how to use it before you try moving things around.

I hate trying to format and move music on various players with various programs,
On my phone I just drag and drop songs and movies (or I can use dropbox if I can't find my cable or something). I can use wma or mp3 for songs and avi, wmv and several others for movies/video. There's no program. It's the same exact way on every phone I've owned that can play music and also on any of the non-apple players I've ever had and my android tablet.

I was finally able to fix my problem. I did a back up (not sync) of my phone to the new computer and can now add to my phone. Downside, I did lose all my music. I *think* it's all stored on my crashed hard drive, which I was told I just need a drive enclosure for, so guess I need to actually go buy one now.
