Hi, question from a newbie here.

My in-laws and I are all switching to more organic foods and healthy food choices. I thought I had read somewhere that a lot of junk gets pumped into the 10kg bags of frozen chicken breasts, including corn syrup. Is there any truth to this?

I know that some of them have sodium and water pumped in, but is anyone aware of more? I tried googling it, but I wasn't getting the answers.

Looking forward to hearing some opinions!

Wouldn't it be listed on the package ingredients? Never heard of that, btw.

Maybe I read wrong, it was a while ago. But I don't really trust the ingredients list on foods anymore so it's hard to know what's what.

I've seen chicken broth added, but never sugar. And since chicken pretty much has no flavor unless you add flavor in cooking, I think it would be noticeable if sugar was added.

Maybe you read saline, thought salt and remembered it as sugar?

I've never heard sugar being pumped in though. I wonder if that would come up in Food, Inc.

From my experiences with a program for food addicts, most restaurant chicken, which I assume comes frozen, is injected with dextrose, so we did not eat it. Obviously, any breaded chicken was off limits too, but we also avoided grocery store rotisserie chicken as well.

Many times the package ingredients will just say "flavorings" which in the case of frozen turkey is often just rosemary, but it can be a mixture of all kinds of stuff. We were instructed to call the company to find out what the "flavorings" were.

I used to work in commercial kitchens and I have never heard of such a thing when it comes to chicken. The chicken we use was just chicken. Anything added was for flavour and we did it in house.

I have two brands of frozen chicken breasts in my freezer, and neither has any carbs listed. Based on that, I would say any sugar hidden in "broth" or "flavorings" is minimal enough not to add a carb. This is assuming, of course, their nutritional analysis is listed correctly.

Yes, the package can say "flavorings" but there are rules about what can be called a flavoring and what can not. HFCS, corn syrup, and sugar are all things that companies are required to list separately on an ingredient label. If you are concerned, read the label. if sugar is added, it has to be listed.

Just googled dextrose in frozen chicken and got lots of hits. Couldn't find anything official but there's enough chatter out there that it's not unheard of. Many sites said that frozen chicken breasts are injected with a solution of sodium and dextrose to plump them up.

Anyway, the founder of my food plan did tons of research and I'm confident in her advice.

Cost wise and health wise, wouldn't it be better to buy and freeze chicken? They are frequently on sale specially in 'club' packs.

Thank you, so I'm not quite crazy...

I'm finding the hidden ingredients in our food more and more alarming, I hate that we can't trust mass markets anymore.

I've been buying chicken and freezing them myself, but we're looking at switching to organic chicken, and around here buying just the breast in organic isn't possible. But I'm sure I can switch a lot of my meals for whole chicken pieces vs just the breast.

Thanks for your help ladies!
