Annika Eriksson, a school lunch lady in Falun, Sweden, has been told to dumb down her food a bit. Well-loved for baking fresh bread every day and offering a huge buffet of vegetables, she was recently told by school officials to start using store-bought bread and cut her vegetable options in half because it's not fair to students in other schools, who don't receive the same caliber of food in their cafeterias.

According to The Local, Katarina Lindberg, head of the unit responsible for the school district's food plan said, "A menu has been developed. ...It is about making a collective effort on quality, to improve school meals overall and to try and ensure everyone does the same."

The board's decision appears to indicate that although Eriksson's lunch offerings at the school did not raise the food budget, garnered no complaints and were designed to give students a variety of healthful options, it is more important for there to be uniform conformity to the municipality's lunch program than for the food to be any good.

Students and parents at the school are unhappy with district's decision, and are especially concerned that these rules will also threaten Eriksson's traditional Easter and Christmas smörgåsbords.

Of course, it makes perfect sense. If the other schools can't have a perfectly run lunch system that stays within the budget and that kids love, then NO ONE CAN!

Really? If the food is that good and she's staying within budget, I'd be giving her a promotion to be over all the schools' food!

Okay good. So I'm not off thinking that it's a bizarre story. Ya. If she's doing so well, introduce her program into the other schools... don't cut her back.

I guess all the top quality teachers need to start slacking too, because that wouldn't be fair to students with awful teachers.

I agree!

What they should be doing is bringing other lunch ladies into Ms Eriksson's school kitchen. Have her teach them how to provide her style meals.

That would be too logical.

Gotta love Socialism. No one can "fail" and no one can be "exceptional" either. Government-enforced mediocrity for all!

My MIL ran a local school district bakery for 20 years but retired when they stopped having fresh bread and real food prepared. Now it's all mass-produced yuck. On the upside- the family is still enjoying her unbelievable soft, puffy "Lunch Lady" rolls. After making tens of thousands of them over the years, she's incredible with fresh bread.

I have a feeling the basic standard of meals in Swedish schools (which are free to all pupils) are very good to begin with, so standardising them probably isn't as horrific as it sounds.

I know it sounds like a unique concept, but how about raising the bar for the others, rather than lowering the bar for her.

(I stand by that for lunch ladies in Sweeden, students in the U.S., teachers world-wide, etc. I'm so tired of seeing people have to "live down" to standards when everyone could try harder to live up to expections.)

It's not just socialism. Lots of governments do it. CoughcoughNCLBcoughcough.

It's ridiculous. And as a teacher, I'm tired of it. Good for Mrs. Eriksson for caring for her kids. I just wish all our students could have great lunches like she's preparing.

Thank you, Kim. I don't think this is an ideological cause. I think this has to do more with the modern, underlying societal theme to strive for mediocrity.

That's just crazy! She was providing nourishing food the kids loved and staying within budget. What's wrong with that? This just makes no sense! Maybe it wasn't supposed to.

A**-U-ming much?

There's so much about your statement that I could point out, but I'm going to start and stop with the most obvious one: Sweden is not a socialist state. They have social democracy, which is not the same as socialism.

But by all means, the stupid is strong in Scandinavia as well. As this story proves

Something similar happened in my kids elementary school. We go a a Catholic school and they are always working off a shoestring budget.

The meals have gotten progressively worse in the 7 years we have been there...think a breaded chicken patty, baked french fries, and applesauce served on a disposable foam plate. One of the families, who is very wealthy and very generous, offered to furnish the kitchen with brand new appliances where you could actually cook---not just heat up cans of food, as we have been told time and time again lack of suitable appliances were the reason for low quality food. He also offered to have a catered HEALTHY meal brought in weekly to kick off this project.

The archdiocese declined---said it wasn't fair to the rest of the schools that were stuck with outdate kitchens.

So, the US isn't the only country with absolutely asinine school board/district decisions. While misery may like company, I'm not taking any comfort in this.

This is exactly what I took away. Stupid people everywhere.

There seems to me that, like the McDonald's Hot Coffee Incident, there must be something else behind this, because it is inutterably stupid.
