My soon to be 12 y/o niece is now permitted to wear lipgloss, and I'd like to buy her one for her b-day. Seeking advice... I don't wear lipgloss myself, so I am clueless as to which ones are good and what specific color would be ok for her age. TIA.

I loved the Bonne Belle ones at that age. So many flavours and I think they were all clear.

I was going to suggest Bonne Bell too. Loved it as a teen and still do.

My 12 yr old dd love Baby Lips, by Maybelline. It's just a clear, maybe lightly tinted gloss, but it moisturizes really well. Clear glosses are what her age is into from what i've seen, nothing bright or that has a lot of color, just glossy.
I think we tried every single gloss out there, because dd gets really chapped lips & she liked this one the best. |

What do you mean by age appropriate? Do you mean the packaging, because otherwise lipgloss is lipgloss isn't it? Perhaps you're thinking of something sheer as opposed to densely coloured? |

Thank you for prompting me to clarify - Yes, I was thinking more about the color when I said that.

My 14 year old collects lipgloss and lip balm. Her favorite is baby lips right now. She also loves eos, it is cool because its a sphere rather than tube. Both of those are more balms than gloss. |

Do you mean lipSTICK? Lipgloss is just shinny Chapstick. It might be tinted but its clear. My 6 year old has lipgloss. Lipgloss comes in the disney princess play kits from the toy store.
Now as far as lipstick, I think she'll be at least 15, maybe 21 bf she gets to wear that!
The ULTA store has a lipstick variety pack(they're like little mini lipsticks). She might like that better so she can figure out what colors she likes? I know lipgloss also comes in variety packs. My little girl loves that Bonnie brand at Walmart. |

The C.O. Bigelow ones from Bath and Body Works are really nice and don't have a ton of color. Some of them are a little glittery, too.
I'd recommend those.

If you are a pea that goes to Walmart, when you are in the check out isle they will have a display of "Soft lips lip gloss" it is tinted coral color. It is so pretty and good for your lips and very appropriate for any age. I wear it on my lips daily. |

My 14 year old loves Baby Lips as well. I've offered her all kinds of lipsticks, but she would rather just wear this gloss. Makes her looks very natural. |

DD is 12 and she likes the Soft Lips brands for moisturizing, they don't look like much on. If she wants something more make-up-y, she likes the tubes from Bath and Body Works...fun flavors, more shine and some have a hint of color. |

I'm confused about a 12 year old just being allowed to use lipgloss too. I grew up in a culty-cult with no makeup allowed EVER, and we all had lipgloss when we were in 2nd grade. It was really just glorified chapstick in fun containers.
I think now though, there are so many more "adult" types of lipgloss that are popular. Some are even really dark/burgundy shades of gloss. Lots of shine, glitter, etc. So maybe this means the dark tinted/colorful kind?
I'd just hit up Rite Aid and pick a handful of different pink shades that look fun. I'd probably end up getting a bunch for me too.

If it's like chapstick, I think it's more likely deemed a lip balm, not a gloss.
Gloss is usually liquid, in a tube with an applicator. Normally sheer, either clear or a hint of color; sometimes just glossy, sometimes glimmery, sometimes glittery.
My favorite gloss is by Fresh and I have only seen it at sephora.com-- I like it because it tastes like lemon. But maybe a little pricey for a 12 year old.
Hard to tell you what a good color is for her age, OP. So much depends on your own coloring. CVS (and many other similar stores) have the NYC line of products-- $3 for a tube. Lots of sheer colors.

DD is 12 and she - and I also actually - wear Revlon Colorburst lip gloss - it's nice and light and they have a number of light colors. |

Go to any drugstore and pick her up a few. Every major brand makes lip gloss.
And no, lip gloss is NOT just shiny chapstick. It's a lot thicker and is, of course, a gloss, and most nowadays are tinted and/or frost, pearl, sparkly, glitter, etc. I'd get her a few pinks/golds/neutrals depending on what her skin tone is.
I personally love the color varities from Clinique and I still love Lancome Juicy Tubes--but those are a little spendy for a kid.

MrsKLewis, I can see you're new here, so maybe you're not aware of how you're coming across, but so far it's "monumental bitch."
This is a light-hearted thread about lip gloss. Back off the attitude. Sit back and relax. Employ your spell check. And learn to use the quote feature properly. |

Baby Lips is huge here with 12 and her friends for everyday, it's lightly tinted different shades. She has various true lip glosses for "events" lol - like going to the movies.

My 3rd grader wears lipstick sometimes. Last year I let her wear bright red lipstick to the rodeo. it matched her hat. |
