We are driving into Manhattan on Tuesday and my SIL is insisting that we drive all the way but she wants to park at Newark and take a train in (Path?). What say the the peas? Which would be easiest?
Our end destination is Soho, Hilton Garden. I would post an exact address, but I'm at work.....
Thanks! | |

PATH is on limited service because of the storm. Make sure you check to see it's going to and from where you need.
Does your hotel have parking? |

Where are you driving from? My dad lives in Manhattan and depending on how long I'll be staying, it's so much easier-- and cheaper-- to just take Amtrak (I live in Pennsylvania).
Why does she want to park in Newark?

We are coming from Michigan and driving through Canada. We are spending Monday night in Niagara. I don't know why he choose Newark specifically other than he doesn't really want to drive into Manhattan nor does he want to pay $70-$100/night to park.
When we go to Chicago, we take the train in and use public transportation there, and I think that he was wanting to something similar.

For th past five years, every time i've gone to Nyc, i've parked in jersey city at a $13-per-night garage on sip avenue and taken the path in from journal square to world trade center. From there, i would get a taxi to where i need to be. So much easier than driving into manhattan. |

As previously stated, PATH trains have been running limited service. According to my co-workers, they're VERY crowded at rush hours and may be crowded at other times (I know at least one night going home they couldn't fit on a train and had to wait for the next one).
You could check the PATH website for exact information.

There's a garage on Wooster St and one on W. Broadway off of Canal St. If I can contact a friend in time, I will let you know their website where I am pretty sure you can get discount coupons for parking.
I can't promise, but I will try to find out. |

Ok, here's your info:
Use this website to find parking and the rates, and you can print coupons from the site.
We parked at 311 W.Broadway right off of Canal St. I'm pretty sure it is close to your hotel.
Hope this helps!

If you are driving down the NYS thruway, you can park at a train station and take Metro North into the city. Metro North starts in Poughkeepsie. I park in Manhattan whenever I travel to the city and I don't pay more than $35 a night. If you google NYC parking coupons you can find deals online. |

Another recommendation for parking in Jersey City and taking the Path into the city. |

I would just park in the city. Between what you would pay to park in Jersey, the train fare to get INTO the city and your time? I don't think it's worth it.
I live in Newark and never take the train in. | |

Poughkeepsie is an hour commute north. Way too much time to spend on a train when you are visiting for a few days.

Double check and triple check any mass transit suggestions. That includes NJ Transit, the PATH and the subways. Not all stations are open (3 PATH stations are completely closed, others are closed during the week or on weekends, many with limited hours). I don't think there is a single NJ Transit line that is operating fully yet.
I do take the PATH from Newark often. I purposely have not since the hurricane. If you do this, you will want to travel off-peak. Avoid rush hour like the plague. |

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. I will try and get dh to drive into the city and park, he is reluctant to due to the cost - we will be driving a minivan and will have to pay for oversize parking in addition to parking costs.
He still wants to park out at Newark, but we will see....

I always park in an icon parking garage. They usually have coupons online. Shouldn't be more than $40/day for oversize. |

There's no WAY I'd drive all the way down to Newark if you're coming from Niagara. You're tacking on extra drive
Time to go around and below the city. Plus as others have mentioned the city is still in rough shape and PATH is not back to normal yet.
Look into MetroNorth out of NY or western ct if he's bent on not driving into the city proper. I would steer well clear of Newark. |

My DH and I stayed in Newark at the Fairfield for a couple of days while visiting family. We have family in Upstate NY and got a rental car in Syracuse and drove to the city for a couple of days. Neither of us had ever been to the city, so we didn't know what to expect. We decided to stay in Newark, leave the rental car at the hotel, and take the Path into the city.
If we ever do it again, we will just drive and park in NYC. For all the hassle, it just wasn't worth it. Especially after paying $40 in cab fare to the Path station and back. And even more so when we ended up in an illegal taxi at midnight on the way back to the hotel! We didn't even know such things existed, but we were tired and obviously didn't know where we were going anyway, so yeah, really bad experience!
The second night we ended up driving over. Although I had no idea where I was going (this was before navigation on phones worked very well) we ended up in the middle of Times Square, which was stressful. However, we got through just fine, found some parking that was free on the street, and didn't worry about a thing. Much better than the previous day's trip! |
