What a special time! The Jewish War Veterans group sets up a Thanksgiving dinner for the troops training at Fort Dix and Fort McGuire. They board busses on Thanksgiving morning, thinking they are going on a training exercise. Instead they pull up to a hotel where they are given Thanksgiving dinner, with entertainment and gifts. As they get off the bus, they are welcomed by a good size group of grateful Americans waving flags, shaking hands, maybe giving them cards and definitely giving thanks.
My church friends have been going for four years. This was the second time for my family. They get choked up, we get choked up... it's a beautiful thing. I am so proud of one of our young friends. He's about 12. He stood at attention, saluting the entire time the troops were coming through. At first he was at the back of the crowd until someone pushed him forward. I was standing next to him and many passed by without noticing. Every so often I would let someone know, you have a man saluting you. Each one would smile and return his salute. One female soldier gave him a hug
There was a higher up soldier who returned his salute and said, "At ease, soldier.". Those were the only times he broke formation.
So thankful for our troops, past and present. |
