I love the herding group...that long haired collie was sooo very happy! I loved the dog's attitude of JOY! But the winner was one of my favorites too, so I wasn't disappointed.

I love learning the names of different breeds too.....it's a fun tradition to watch it every year. Thanks to the city of Philadelphia for hosting it on (or near) Thanksgiving!

That Great Dane was so gorgeous! I loved the terrier who won, although I may be prejudiced since I have two terriers myself.

I love watching dog shows. I hope I will be going to one here in Chicago at McCormack place in February.

I tried to watch the dog show, but Piper feels the need to "talk" to all of the dogs on TV... she gets herself so worked up and excited, it's funny, but I can't take the barking!

I was there. The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center is close to my home in the Phila suburbs. It is fun to watch the broadcast to see what else is shown besides judging. Not shown on TV was my son in the HS honor guard during singing of the National Anthem. They were given VIP passes and he met and spoke with John O'Hurley. I think in dog show world this is called a benched show which means the breeders have the dogs available for petting and breeders answer questions. It is funny to drive by and see the dogs on leashes sniffing the same grassy spots to pee

I'm not generally a fan of the looks of most show dogs, but that Dane was gorgeous! I just wish the trend in the US would sway away from cropped ears.

We turned it back and forth and missed the Westie.

Just saw him/her at the end of the terrier group.

That Great Dane WAS amazing!

Joy,

You can watch the westie (or any other bread you like) in the ring Here. He/she is lovely, but the personality (which I think is so important in any terrier) doesn't really come through.

Sad what they have done to most breeds. I can't watch it anymore.

We watched! My DH raises German Shorthair Pointers and Wired Hair Pointing Griffins. We didn't get to see either walk the ring. They were on during a commercial.

We missed it, but it's okay. We will watch Westminster and Eukenuba as my girls daddy will be there. Last year, he was the 4th ranked Rhodesian Ridgeback in the US, so hopefully this year he does equally as well. My girl, Kenda, is one of 8 puppies from his first litter. So far 7 of the 9 puppies are being shown, and 1 has already finished her Championship at 12.5 months of age. Kenda has her first show today, so we will see how she does as well.

Can I ask why you say this?

I'm not the one who posted this but in general I agree. Many dogs winning shows display "extreme" features or characteristics of their breed and/ or have moved away from their original purpose or their breed standard.

ETA: Everybody's favorite example, the GSD

Because thy have ruined the majority of breeds. Everything is bred to the extreme...and for what? They can't do their original jobs anymore and that was supposedly what the AKC was created to do...preserve the purebred dog.

GSDs can hardly walk, Border Collies CANNOT herd, Eng Bulldogs can't breathe, etc.

AKC confirmation dogs and actual working dogs are now almost two separate breeds. A Border Collie vs a Barbie Collie. A working field Lab vs confirmation Lab....huge huge differences.
