4 glasses of wine every night for 2 weeks maybe a month? No I don't think you can say they have a "drinking problem". But something is going on if this is a new and sudden change in behavior.
If the person is able to drink this much and function normally I would guess that they have been drinking that much for a longer time and hiding it. You don't build up that kind of tolerance just like that. |

Really? If 6 bottles of beer beer is 9 units at 5% alcohol.
And the wine is 9 units at 11% alcohol. That is closer to closer to 12 bottles of beer.

AA has a checklist on their website.
The person can go there and answer the questions themselves.
I have no idea what "functioning " drinker/ alcoholic is. Either the person is an alcoholic, or they have a drinking problem that could lead to alcoholism .
If you are wondering or concerned, seek out Al-Anon. You might get answers for you. | |

it certainly doesn't sound normal but i've heard the definition of an alcoholic to be:
if your drinking causes problems and yet you continue to do it.
hard to say without knowing the person if this is the case or not. or if continuing on this path it will be.

IMO, it sounds like there is something that has changed recently in this person's life and they are "dealing" with what ever that is by drinking. I put dealing in quotes because what I mean is drinking is not the way to handle problems but it sounds like that is what this person is doing. Do I think they have a drinking problem? Not necessarily. I think they have a problem that needs to be worked out or they will have a drinking problem if the drinking continues. |

My guess is that there is something that is causing the change. Are they an alcoholic? Maybe/Maybe not. However, they are clearly abusing chemicals to address issues.
My advice is to watch them and offer any support that you can and let them know that you are willing to help. |
