I've been working full time for 30 years. I've worked my way up the ladder, and for the last 13 years, I've been managing a team of Accounts Receivable Reps. I'm at the point where I just want to work part time so that I can spend more time with my kids. My current job is about a 1 1/2 hour commute each way, and I'm really burned out on the traffic, stressful job etc.

I'm in the process of applying for a part time job that is 10 minutes from the house. It sounds like a perfect job for me, but I'm not sure how to explain the desire to step out of management and into a part time role. Should I focus on the desire to be with my family, the commute or both. I think I'm going to hear that I'm overqualified, and I'm not quite sure how to overcome that, or if I can overcome it.

Any advice?

Focus on why you are the best person for the job. The short answer: no one cares why it is best for you. They want the best fit for the job.

It sounds like there are some reasons besides the commute and the part-time aspect that lead you to believe it is a great fit for you. when I am hiring, those are the things I want to know.

Agreed. Your CL should be all about that--why *you* will be their best choice. Focus on how you fit all their stated needs.

At the interview, you can just say that you're looking to move to a part-time role. You don't have to explain that, and most people who are hiring either truly don't care about your motivation to cut back, or they already know it's a treacherous road to go down to ask about family status in an interview. People go from full time to part time and vice versa all the time.

If you are the best candidate for their job, they won't worry about why you're scaling back. I certainly wouldn't volunteer any specifics, but be prepared with a generic and upbeat response just in case they do ask (there's always an occasional person who doesn't know or care that it's illegal to ask about marital status, etc. during the hiring process). Good luck!

It's so strange - I've interviewed and hired for years, but it's so different when I'm on the other end. You're absolutely right, I need to remember that they really do just want the best fit for the job.
