They are threatening to picket Sandy Hook Elementary.

I don't know why I'm surprised to read this.

LINK

Less than 48 hours after the Connecticut school shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, which took place on Dec. 14, the Westboro Baptist Church is already making plans to picket. The Westboro Baptist Church is known for picketing and protesting at funerals across the country.

Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment, Shirley Phelps-Roper tweeted on Dec. 15.

They need to come back to Oklahoma, Bryan Weathers, from Moore, said. We know how to take care of them here.

Westboro 'God hates Fags' Baptist Church is planning to pciket at Sandy Hook, to praise 'God's judgment,' Margie Phelps tweeted as well on Dec. 15.

Westoboro Baptist Church is known for carrying signs that read Thank God for dead babies, and the like. It is unknown what kind of signs will be seen, if the Westboro Baptist Church actually pickets in Newtown, CT.

The Supreme Court ruled that it is legal for the Westboro Baptist Church to picket funerals. Despite that ruling, many cities and towns have passed laws that force the Westboro Baptist Church to stay a specific distance away from funerals

The article has links to the women's Twitter accounts showing they did indeed post the tweets.

My friends who live in the NE are saying the same thing. I wish I lived close enough to go too.

It's bad enough they do this at soldiers' funerals, but small children?? There is nothing too sacred for these animals.

What in the world could they have a beef with about this?!

OMG, 20 grieving famlies and now they have to suffer the indignity of Westboro? Those people are just horrid.

ETA: I'm sorry, that should have been 28 grieving famlies. I did not intend to not include those who were not children.

Based on the twisted logic they have proclaimed in the past, I am going to place bets that they are saying this tragedy happened because God was punishing America for legalizing gay marriage.

My thoughts is they are nothing but a bunch of attention whores, really.

Do it! I drove to Tucson (a couple of hours away) to be part of the Angel Brigade for Christina Greene's funeral (the Gabby Giffords' shooting). We didn't end up having to do it because a radio station gave them air time to keep them away from the funeral. They may or may not have hit the switch that kept parts from being broadcast.

Simply_Lovely - your post is disgusting!

"A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education."
- President Theodore Roosevelt

On June 28, 1787, as Governor of Pennsylvania, Benjamin Franklin hosted the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where he moved:

"That henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessing on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning."

Franklin wrote April 17, 1787:

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters."

Benjamin Franklin wrote his epitaph:

"THE BODY of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN - Printer. Like the cover of an old book, Its contents torn out, And stripped of its lettering and gilding, Lies here, food for worms; Yet the work itself shall not be lost, For it will (as he believed) appear once more, In a new, And more beautiful edition, Corrected and amended By The AUTHOR."

Skybar, the post to which you refer is a reference to the supposed reason for the action by the atrocities who call themselves Westboro members.

Now, do I think it is tasteful to put it in this thread? Maybe not. But it's far from disgusting.

Please help me understand. Why are these people allowed to assault other people like this? Aren't there any laws to stop them?

To me, freedom of speech is one of the most important things we have as free people. But it's limited by a very few things. Other peoples rights are one of them. When you actually turn up at someones funeral like they do, you do deserve to get removed by the police.

When speech is likely to incite violence, it becomes unlawful, the "fire in a crowded theater" comparison. They are bordering on that if they do it anyway when they know their speech is likely to be confrontational. Unfortunately, speech people disagree with is what needs to be protected. The media should quit paying attention to these deranged, hateful people.

There is a petition asking for these monsters to officially be declared a hate group. Please consider signing it. I am beyond disgusted that they would even consider using this tragedy as a platform to spout their hatred. The post above about this being shocking to no one? That doesn't include me. I am absolutely shocked at this. Just when I thought I couldn't be more outraged at this atrocity, these people come along and prove that human beings can truly be soulless.

I think she's just saying that it's not shocking because they always seem to turn up at "high profile" (for lack of a better term) tragedies such as this. It's almost expected when things like this happen.

They're predictable... That doesn't mean they aren't disgusting. I'll be taking a look at the petition you linked. Thank you for sharing it.

No, I understand. I get that they don't hold anything as sacred and they predictably will show up when it's least appropriate to do so, because it gets them more media coverage. My mind gets it, but this? The funerals of these precious children? Even the cynic in me can't comprehend that kind of action. To have that level of hatred against same sex marriage to believe that it was God's will being executed? No. Just no. Children were executed.

I'm really having a hard time with my own feelings. I am so deeply disturbed by the shootings, like everyone is, but I am feeling like I want to see someone pay for it and I know that wont happen. I had a brief thought that if the Westboro people showed up and someone took them out, I'd be happy. That doesn't make me a good person, and I don't like that my mind can go there.

It's rage. I'm filled with it, and I feel like it reduces me to being the same sort of person as the Westboro group. I have to stop feeling like this.

Some states do have laws to at least muzzle them. Oklahoma passed laws making it illegal to protest within 1000 ft (1/5 of a mile) of a funeral and all protesting must stop 2 hours before the funeral begins and can't resume until 2 hours after the funeral ends.

I've also heard they have the worst luck with their van tires here and no one seems to keep their tire size in stock. The last two times they came to protest they had to get a flat bed tow truck to take the van home.

You know what, Mom... It's ok. It's ok to feel the way you do.

We all respond to these situations differently and we all struggle and grieve in our own way. I think many of us have those "eye for an eye" thoughts that creep into our minds at times. They're not the lovliest of thoughts, but we're human.

Hugs to you. There are a lot of people feeling the exact same way you are. It's ok.

It's because CT is one of the states that has legalized gay marriage. The fire departments are already on alert for this, and will barricade the funerals if needed.

I really appreciate this, sincerely. Thank you. I was just telling my husband that I wonder if I need counseling? Isn't that dramatic? I mean, my children are alive and happy and I do not personally know any of the victims or their families, so why am I thinking that MY feelings are so important, when there are people who really have to deal with such an insurmountable loss? Who am I? No one.

But, I am having all of these huge feelings I can't seem to get under control. I have turned off the TV, but as I was eating dinner last night and went on Facebook, the picture of that beautiful little Emilie was posted and I literally fought throwing up as my food was coming up. I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm usually very under control...maybe that's why I'm so full of rage. There's nothing in this situation that I can control.

So, yeah. I think I'm going to write. Start a journal to my own beautiful girls. Writing has been therapeutic in the past.
