Wow - that is really sad

I guess if it were me, I'd keep her home too, but it just makes me sad that sickos make us live in fear.

I just got the call that the high school where I work is closed tomorrow due to threats. I am sad that it has come to this, but I guess I am also glad that they aren't taking any chances. If we had school, even though I had already heard rumors of the threats, I would have gone to work. I don't think I would have insisted on my kids going though.

I'd send her.

Kids at the local high schools were making threats and/or starting rumors in an attempt to get Winter Break started early. Some were SO out there it was ridiculous.

I had a call from the superintendent (one of those pre-recorded things) saying that the threats have been investigated by school officials and law enforcement and there has been nothing credible, and yes, there is still school tomorrow.

Plus if I have to go to school tomorrow to teach, I think the kids should be there too.

I would send my child to school. I can't imagine keeping my child home because of my own fears, my job as a parent is to raise a confident child to do that I can't let fear of "what if" cloud my judgement.

The last day for my kids was today, but I had already said if they had school scheduled tomorrow they wouldn't go. I think the Connecticut tragedy combined with the whole end of the world crap invites people to do dumb things. We are staying home tomorrow and having a whole day of fun Christmas activities.

I follow my son's high school on Facebook. Today, they posted this:

The Rumor Mill
Rumors, Misinformation and Fear
The terrible events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut last Friday makes everyone concerned for their safety and the safety of their children. How could this happen? What can we do to prevent such senseless attacks?
In this heightened state of fear and anger, we can predict like clockwork that there will be similar concerns raised in our own schools, then somebody will start a rumor that an attack is being planned. As the rumor spreads, fear mounts and specific details get fabricated and added to the story, making it sound even more menacing and real.
Schools and police must investigate threats of violence, and the more we investigate, the more that people speculate, fabricate, post and spread. This rumor mill generates more fear.
Now add to that the fascination of the 12/21/12 “End of the World” Mayan Calendar prophecy that is getting a lot of press and social media attention, and you add fuel to the fear and fabrication. In this environment, a few students (or sometimes adults) say that they themselves are going to do something heinous, or that they know someone who is going to commit an act of violence. We investigate, and the cycle continues.
This is where we were at FVHS today – several scared students retelling completely fabricated stories of plots of violence. It’s human nature, and only time slows it down. We can present facts to try to calm them, but it has the opposite effect – even more agitation.
We had increased police presence on campus today for two purposes, to help students and parents feel more safe and to investigate the various rumors and claims.
Police found no credible threats, and thus there were no suspects and no arrests for threats.
We have increased supervision of the campus through asking teachers and staff to be more visible and to actively patrol the campus and watch hallways between classes and during lunch and conference periods.
We are closing off more gates during the day to funnel visitors through the administration office.
Teachers are locking their doors (as per our tardy policy) to help students feel more safe.
We will have police on campus Thursday and Friday as a show of support and to help students, staff and parents feel safe.
We will have two more supervision staff members to help watch the campus on Thursday and Friday.

Yesterday, my son was asking if he could stay home Friday because of the end of the world. I told him no. I don't think it's ever a good idea to foster fear in our children. What happened in Sandy Hook was an anomaly. A child is probably more likely to be killed in a car accident or struck by lightning than to die in a school shooting.

Rumors were circulating at our school prior to Sandy Hook. We just got a call from the superintendent's office that school will be open but no bookbags at the middle or high schools plus police will greet students in the morning. DS is sick so he's not going but I think I would send him otherwise. These rumors are happening in too many places to be credible.

A couple here in western NY are in an "Inside" lockdown. This school will be in what our safety plan refers to as a “lock out.” Students and staff will go about their daily routine inside the building. They will have a police officer in the main entrances of the schools to greet those who enter the buildings. All exterior doors will remain locked and staff will monitor the building throughout the day. The basketball game scheduled as a home game on Friday evening will now be played as an away game.

Rumors are that there's another school that will also be doing this.

This is my view as well, I can't let my fears hold my kids back.

Rumors of threats here too. If there is school (snow day today), I will be sending my son. They have been investigated and apparently are unfounded. I will be sending my son, but my older daughter is freaking out and wants him to stay home. I will not cave in, he will be fine. If it was a credible threat, hw would be home with me.

An extra police officer is going to be in my daughter's high school tomorrow. They arrested a 15 year old with a big metal pipe outside of her school yesterday. He wasn't from the area. He had hitch hiked to get here. The last person who gave him a ride dropped him off on the edgeof town and immediately called the police saying someone odd was heading to the school. They were waiting for him and arrested him as he was approaching the school. Very strange.

At first, my kids' school said the rumors are false, send your kids, we're still having school. A few hours later, they changed their tune and all of the local schools are closed due to threats and rumors in social media.

One kid doesn't care. The other has been wondering out loud about the end of the world. I suspect he'll have a nightmare tonight as he usually does when he starts worrying too much.

This whole thing is stupid and makes me wonder about our society.

Gosh, what a mess.

My kids are out of school now, no grandkids yet so I'm not really involved, but I'll be thinking of all you younger parents tomorrow.

My first inclination would have been to keep my kids home, where I thought they'd be safe. But after thought, I agree that I can't act on fear. But I might have been in the school volunteering all day.

I'll be so glad when this year is over. I'm hoping 2013 is calmer. I doubt that it will be, but I can hope and pray, can't I?

Hang in there Moms.

My kids' district got out Tuesday, my student's last day was today and only staff will be in the buildings.

My mom's district had these threats and rumors before Sandy Hook so they had already planned on being on yellow lockdown (no outsiders in the building, but kids can go to the bathroom and switch classes), windows will be closed and blinds pulled.
