We just got back. I have never read the book (that I
can recall) and have never seen the stage production.

All three of us thought it was fabulous. We saw it
at 11:00 and there wasn't an empty seat. Many tears
at the end and applause from the audience.

DS who is 26 also thought it was fabulous which
proves the younger generation can enjoy musicals
and movies without special effects.

Anyone else going to see it today?

It was amazing! Loved it! We saw it at 11 a.m. and there were no empty seats in the house (and hardly a dry eye either).

Pelly, I had finally collected myself but while
we were walking out I saw another woman crying
and started all over again.

There's another thread on the front page about the movie as well with several reviews. The thread title isn't quite as obvious though: Can you hear the people sing..... thread

I bought tickets for tonight's showing @ 10:40p 2+ weeks ago for myself, my daughter and her friend to go and see this movie. I've been sick for a week now and am just not up to going so late tonight. We'd be after 3am getting home. I'm sending my daughter and her friend without me. I hoping to be feeling well enough by the weekend to go. I've heard good things from those who have seen it so far today.

We tried to get in the 2:00pm showing and it was sold out. We did get tickets for 5:25pm and we are heading out in a few minutes. I am packing tissues in my bag.

I'm lol over the "no spoilers" of your title... I just assume anyone over the age of 21 has seen Les Mis in one of the several movies that have been made over the last 20 years, in a play, read the book, seen it on TV, rented the video... lol!

I appreciate the no spoilers. I have never seen it, read it or anything. I have only heard some of the music.

DH and I saw it at 11:35 and absolutely loved it. The theater was only about 1/5 of the way full. I want to go see it again.

ITA with the above, so THANK YOU for NO SPOILERS. I'll be 47yo next month and I know nothing about this show other than it's been a Broadway hit for many years. I watched a few XFinity previews today (free, about 1 minute each), so I have "snippets" of it in my mind.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie, though.

I'd heard that the soundtrack was available on iTunes so I thought I'd buy it and know the songs before I see the movie, but the reviews said that the songs aren't in their entirety so I passed.

Blessings,
{Melissa}

I'm 34 and had seen/read none of the above. I saw the movie today and completely fell in love with the story. Now to see/read all that has been made before!

If you love the music, DON'T buy the soundtrack for the movie. Get the 10th anniversary concert; that is by far the best.

The quality of the music on the soundtrack is poor. And without watching the movie, there are far better singers of these songs (well, many of them).

If you haven't heard this music before, you owe it to yourself to hear this concert rendition. And if you have, you still owe it to yourself, lol!

I knew Hugh Jackman could sing but WOW! He was fantastic!

The movie theater we were in went dark about half way through so we"ll have to finish it some other time.

I posted on the other thread too but I think this one is helpful to those who haven't read the book or saw the play but are contemplating a trip to the movies.

To assume that anyone (or everyone) over the age of 21 is fully aware of Les Miz is a bit of a stretch. For plenty of people, this film will be their first experience with Victor Hugo's work.

For those, who are going, take tissues. I read the book so I knew what to expect and it was still a very emotional experience.

I don't know; I'm pretty partial to the original London cast recording. I listened to it non-stop during my senior year in high school.

Part of me wishes they had chosen real singers for this movie instead of looking for actors with some singing cred, but another part of me realizes that the up-close nature of film requires substantially more acting chops than a stage musical does, so I get why they made the choices they did. I could wish they had chosen lesser-known actors who were better singers, but also realize that they wanted a BIG audience for this film, and let's face it, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway etc. will fill seats.

It's just a different experience than the stage version and, to me, though the story and music continues to be moving, it wasn't as thrilling as seeing it live onstage. JMO.

DS 16 and I went to go watch the 10:45 p.m. show because everything else was sold out!! I liked it a lot. I too don't have anything else to compare it to because I've never read the book...never watched it on broadway, etc.

but the movie left me WANTING to go watch the play

I've got $5 Hugh Jackman will win an Oscar.

However, I think -- and believe many critics have said this, too -- Anne Hathaway is really the best part of this movie. I've been a big fan of Les Mis for a long time -- seen the concerts, seen it on broadway, read the book, etc. -- and I thought she was really fantastic and held her own vocally.

Russell Crowe was not up to par.
