I love, really love, the strawberry jello-pretzel salad. Like it might be one of my favorite "salad/desserts" of all time.

LOL. I have a cranberry jello salad thing that I love. I'm from the midwest. It's in my blood.
I've only had the pretzel thing once and it didn't look like that at all ... I think MIL did it wrong! |

This Christmas we served dinner buffet style. There was a separate table for desserts. My non-LDS aunt informed me that I put my jello dishes on the wrong table. I said, "no Auntie these are salads." She said, "I am pretty sure a salad should include a vegetable." I said "if you look closely, there are carrots in that one." She told me her doctor told her to eat more salads but the this was probably not at all what her doctor had in mind, shrugged and took a big scoop of each.

Any holiday meal that involves turkey HAS to have "jello salad". Green jello with grated carrots. My dad and I are the only ones that eat it... and since my parents are in Florida I'm the only one that will eat it, but my turkey dinner isn't complete without it .
While I have never had strawberry jello pretzel salad, I'm thinking I might have to try it when my dad gets home!

Yeah, I always thought that it was strange too that it was called "salad". I guess whoever initially named it considered all jello dishes "salad" and the name just stuck. It is very much a dessert and not a salad. A lighter dessert, but a dessert all the same.

I love jello -- My mom would make lime jello in the can of pineapple rings and then slice it. And my aunt makes a yummy strawberry / banana/ sour cream / jello concoction. And one of my favorite desserts involves raspberries, jello, and ice cream mixed together.

I would probably like it without the pretzels...I just don't want mushy pretzels in the bottom of my bowl, yet I can't imagine how they would stay crispy.
ETA: I see that the pretzels are baked into a crust...I bet that helps keep it crunchy. Maybe I will try this for my NY Eve party. I ain't no snob!

I admit we can be snobby about food, but my stepmother makes a jello/cranberry/nuts/cream cheese thing (no pretzels) that we LOVE and it wouldn't be a holiday dinner without it.
We don't call it salad, but we do eat it with dinner, not for dessert. |

Strawberry Jello Pretzel Salad is one of my favorite desserts. It's the perfect salty sweet combination.
We have a Cranberry Jello Salad at Thanksgiving & Christmas that is one of my favorite holiday treats. It's got cherry/strawberry jello, jellied cranberry, mandarin oranges, & crushed pineapple. It's one of my most requested recipes.

I've never tried it but thank you for posting a picture!!! All this time when people mention it I am imagining pretzels floating in jello all mushy and... It never occurred to me that the pretzels were separate in a crust. That makes it so much better but I still don't think I would like it. Jello is not my thing.

I pretzel salad!
I am with the others - NO idea why it's called a salad. Even with the jello in it.
No matter what it's called, delicious!
Marilyn, the pretzels do stay crunchy. It's part of the "charm" of it. The contrast of the crunch of pretzels with the mushiness of jello/strawberries and cream cheese/whipped cream combo. And the contrast of salt/sweet.
