The trial for Jodi Arias started yesterday. This is local for me, so there's been a lot of coverage. Nationally, not as much (though she did an interview on Inside Edition just after her arrest and there was a feature about the trial on Nightline last night).
Here's the run down. Jodi was 28 or so when her on-again-off-again boyfriend, Travis Alexander, was murdered in 2008. He was shot, stabbed 27 times and then his throat was cut from ear to ear. Jodi is on trial for the murder.
Travis was a devout Mormon. He was Temple worthy (I think that's the phrase that was used) and was a "virgin" until Jodi came around. He convinced her (with the help of the local Missionaries) to join. They had anal sex because he told her it wasn't real sex, so he was technically still a virgin (for awhile). He was a pretty big guy and she was a fairly petite girl. This all came out in opening statements yesterday.
Anyway, she started out saying that she wasn't there. Then she said she was there, but 2 other people that she didn't know had committed the murder. Then, she admitted to murdering him, but said it was self defense because he was an abuser.
There was one prosecution witness yesterday that layed out the heirarchy of the church (wards, stakes...) and who was in charge of the various levels. She also talked about sins and repenting sins to Bishops and such. She said there are different levels of sins and fornication is in the top 3. (Who knew? I didn't!)
Anyway, this is a really interesting trial. I think I can hear Mormons in Mesa and Gilbert cringing from here! There's a lot coming out about this "good Mormon boy" that is not shedding a very good light.
Anyway, if you want some interesting background noise while doing your day-to-day living, here's the link: State of Arizona vs Jodi Arias Trial.

They were saying that the trial will take 3-4 weeks. I'm not sure how accurate that is.
Yes...the pictures!
Travis got a new camera and had her take photos of him and his newly buffed self in the shower (the night of the murder). She's saying that she dropped the camera (there's a shot of the ceiling that is like 2 minutes after her last shot of him) and that he flew into a rage, she was scared for her life and killed him.
They are saying that there are photos of her dragging the body, but I haven't seen those yet and (as far as I know) they didn't show those in the trial yet. |

I actually heard it could last clear into March. Quite the local case, that's for sure!

Oh really? I thought I heard on the news that it was expected that the jury would deliberate sometime around the beginning of February.
Though, based on the evidence they are going through today, piece by piece, March wouldn't surprise me at all. The prosecution is nearing 100 pieces of evidence on day one! |

No, she is the only defendant!
We don't know how the photos came to be. She said she dropped the camera and it broke. We don't know if she stepped on it when dragging the body, if the timer triggered...no one knows. And again, they've talked about the photo, but I haven't seen it shown on anything (the news, opening statements, etc.). Who knows, it could be a bluff, but they say it exists.
Very twisty turny trial with a lot of details! |

I went to high school with Travis Alexander. He was a really kind and decent person who overcame a lot of adversity and managed to become a successful adult.
The allegations Jodi Arias is making are disgusting. My guess is that he continued sleeping with her even though he ended the actual relationship, and that drove Arias over the edge.
Arias' changing stories, coupled with the viciousness of this crime, however, make it impossible to believe her new allegations of abuse and other sexual deviancy.
I hope she is convicted and is punished to the fullest extent of the law.

redboots, it's good to hear that he was a good person. The girl that testified yesterday also said he was very kind and respectful.
Jodi has pulled about 4 versions of the story out so far. I've been listening (and watching on and off) today. They've obviously told her that she has to be emotionally invested in what is being shown. She's cried (when they just showed a photo of him on the floor of the shower), looked shocked and surprised as needed. They've trained her to be much more "soft" where the emotions are. |

My mom is obsessed with this trial! My mom lives in the small town (7,000 people) that Jodi Arias used to live in. For some reason (I'm afraid to ask), my mom thinks she's innocent. She keeps emailing and texting me about it; it's weird. I think she knew her or people who knew her.
I guess it's on Nancy Grace and all that -- I haven't looked. But I saw it on 48 Hours or something like that awhile back.

She said earlier (in a recording of her initial interview with detectives) that she had lived in Yreka (?), a small town near the California/Oregon border.

Yeah, I don't know why I was being coy about it -- I like to lay low. I grew up in Yreka and my mom still lives there. Everyone pretty much knows everyone else, or a degree or two of separation, so Yreka folks are pretty much glued to this trial, according to my mom.
I think I need to break down and ask my mom why she's so convinced she's innocent. She's really defensive about the topic.
ETA: I asked my mom and she said she didn't want me writing about it on the Internet.

They said on one of the news stations (I think it was the 10:00 news the other night) that her father owns a diner in Yreka ( Daddy O's Diner). With the town being that small and her family still there, it wouldn't surprise me that your mom would know her and/or her family! |

Oh, wow! I met the owner when we ate at Daddy O's last year! It used to be Denny's.
I'm just going to have to break down and ask my mom all about it. There are a lot of people up there (in Yreka) rallying around her; there's a Facebook group and all that. I can't imagine -- I mean, I watched the 48 Hours thing or whatever it was, and that and the camera deletions don't make it look good for her at all.

There is now way she is innocent. You don't drive to someone's house, have sex with them, bring a gun (premeditation) and a knife (again premeditation) and kill them like that in so called "self defense". She is a pathological liar. If it was self defense why didn't she own up to what she did instead of saying it was an intruder?
Can you imagine Travis' roommate finding his body like that? How horrific! He made a mistake getting involved with her. His friends tried to warn him about her. I have friends that were in his ward (congregation) and did Pre Paid Law with him. He really is an exceptional man who overcame a past of extreme abuse and neglect. He made this one mistake. And he lost his life over it.
I hope his legacy will be the obstacles he overcame and the life he lived. That his legacy will be the service he gave to others and the encouragement and kindness. Because THAT is how he deserves to be remembered not how he died!
You can hear us cringing? No we are LIVID that this happened and that world lost a great man. I could care less what happened between them sexually. No one is perfect. But the loss is pretty great. Have a little more respect some are mourning their loss! This was a REAL PERSON! Who had people who loved him and who still hurt over losing him.

enjoytotheend, I've been discussing the trial, not him as a person. Like I said to redboots, it's good to hear that he was a good person and that those that knew him respected and loved him for the person that he was...that they know.
But, this is a trial. Right now, just two days into it, they are presenting evindence and witnesses related to the crime, not about what a good guy he was. I'm sure that they will have witnesses to that as the prosecution continues with their case.
This honestly makes me mad. I have MANY friends who knew Travis. He was a good man. He just struggled with a weakness. I am tired of hearing how "beautiful" this evil woman is. I am tired of not hearing about HIS life. He overcame SO much in his life and inspired SO MANY people.
As far as how "beautiful" the media has made her to be, that bothers me too. From what I saw yesterday and today, she's been well versed on the appropriate times to cry, look confused, etc. Beautiful? I don't think so. She seems to have such a flat non-responsive look in her eyes. Not beautiful at all. I do believe that she has such an evil appearance, too.
And please remember you are getting HER story. He isn't here to defend himself. He isn't here to make HIS arguement because SHE not only killed him with a gun, that wasn't enough for her, she SLAUGHTERED him!
No, this isn't HER story. This is witness testimony as being presented by the prosecution at this point. HER story and witnesses will come out later on. HER story is what was told on the rag show Inside Edition, because she presented it. Right now, this is the trial and not the fabricated stories that she's been telling.
Do I think that she is guilty as sin? No doubt in my mind. I also thought Casey Anthony and OJ Simpson were guilty. I pray that the prosecution does a better job of presenting their case and proving her guilty than we saw in either of the other two trials.
According to yesterday's testimony, it wasn't one of his roommates that found him. It was three friends that had called his home and cell numbers and got no answers. They went to check on him, but no answer at the door. They called a roommate to get the garage door code and when they saw his car and bike in the garage, knew there must be something wrong. They were the ones to find him.
I hope his legacy will be the obstacles he overcame and the life he lived. That his legacy will be the service he gave to others and the encouragement and kindness. Because THAT is how he deserves to be remembered not how he died!
It's up to his family and friends to preserve his legacy as a good person, not the legal system. As much as we hate to say it sometimes, she is innocent until proven guilty. The prosecuting attorneys have to do their job. Her hired attorneys have the job of defending her, and they will do that. Unfortunately, defending her (based on her plea of not guilty by self-defense) means that they will paint him to be an abuser or as controlling. I will be surprised if they ever bring up a past of being abused (and I hadn't heard much about that), since that could be misconstrued by the jury as an excuse for any abuse he may have committed. Not saying he did, but it could be read like that if it's brought up.
Don't take it out of context. The cringing was in reference to what the witness (Marie Hall?) yesterday said about the Mormon church (not about Travis), confessing to Bishops and repenting for sins, the hierarchy of sins, the Temple and status of Temple members and falling from grace in the church's eyes making him not Temple-qualified any longer. This was testimony from one of the 3 that found him and she was also asked out by him (and dated him for a short time). There will definately be some parts of this trial that will put the Mormon church in a bad light. Mesa and Gilbert have such a large percentage of Mormons, that's why I said that this part (about the religion) will have people (even if they didn't know Travis) cringing at the publicity.
I understand that you don't care about the sexual nature of their relationship, but that will be brought up by both sides over the duration of this trial. While it isn't relevent to you, it is relevent to the case, both from the prosecuting side (they are trying to show jealousy) and from the defense (showing his alleged controlling/abusive side).
There is no disrespect intended for him in discussing this trial (at least from my side). The facts, as they are brought up, will hit hard for those that knew him personally and there will probably be things said about him that will hurt. I'm sorry for that, but there is a lot of media surrounding this case because of the who...and the absolutely brutal how...of what happened.
Again, I hope with all my heart that the prosecuting attorneys do their job in this trial and prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that she did it. |

I think it is harder because I am closer to the situation than you are. Obviously I knew their sex life is important to the trial. I am just tired of reading comments that he deserved to die because of what he supposedly did to her. I know you didn't say that, I have just read it. Having sex isn't a crime. Killing him is. I am tired of all the focus on her.
And it really doesn't matter to me who found him. Sorry if you didn't get that point. Whomever found him walked into a horrific scene. I forgot his roommate thought he was on vacation. It would still be horrific for him.

I get it, really. I'm not Mormon. I don't live in Mesa (though we get the same news stations), so I'm not nearly as close, with ties to he nor his family. You, with friends of friends, will take things that are said more personally than I will. No doubt about that, at all.
They (the media) are sensationalizing her and this trial, without a doubt!
For what it's worth, everything that I've seen (and heard) show that people hope for a fair trial and that the prosecution does its job to make sure there is no loop hole that allows her to slink away from justice being served. |

I was so bored with her testimony yesterday I fell asleep. Her voice is so flat. It just went on and on. How does she remember all the littlest details. I don't think she was abused as a child, I think she was disciplined and spanked. You have this ideal childhood and then one day when your 7 your parents just change?
so far not one thing that would make me believe he "abused" her. Did he use her? Yes probable.

There was one prosecution witness yesterday that layed out the heirarchy of the church (wards, stakes...) and who was in charge of the various levels. She also talked about sins and repenting sins to Bishops and such. She said there are different levels of sins and fornication is in the top 3. (Who knew? I didn't!)
There will definately be some parts of this trial that will put the Mormon church in a bad light.
I'm not even active LDS, and I'm trying to see how they are going to do this. He was Mormon, he "sinned". She was an adult and chose to join the LDS church. It sounds like a great conspiracy theory with the help of the missionaries they "convinced her to join".
Of course there is repercussions of having sex when you're not married in the LDS church. One member is not a representative of an entire organization. Especially if it's some guy in Arizona, who is Mormon, working a regular job and having sex with his girlfriend who went psycho and murdered him. It's not like he was like Ted Haggard or Jesse Jackson Jr.
Weird.
They had anal sex because he told her it wasn't real sex, so he was technically still a virgin (for awhile).
That was his belief, if he ever said it, not the stance of the LDS church. It seems like a stupid thing to bring up at trial. They were adults, they had sex.
There's a lot coming out about this "good Mormon boy" that is not shedding a very good light.
Again, just weird. |

I'm not sure how the hierarchy of the church is relevant to the case.
I only caught bits of it when I was home over New Years', but the cafe we had lunch at yesterday had the trial on. Kind of funny for a little diner at a little marina at a little town in NorCal to be watching it. |

Was Travis the best boyfriend? Certainly not.
Did that give Jodi Arias license to stab him 27 times, slit his throat and shoot him in the head? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
I feel that the ex-boyfriend the prosecution called to the stand refuted ALL of Jodi's claims that Travis forced her to do things sexually that she did not want to do. They dated long before she met Travis, and the boyfriend testified that they had anal sex several times, that Jodi was "aggressive sexually" and was certainly no babe in the woods when she met Travis Alexander.
Jodi is grasping for straws, IMO.

It's frustrating watching a trial when you have more information than is being presented. It's hard for families and friends to watch sometimes. |

I is just going on and on. Could she possibly honestly "remember" all of this stuff. Saying how someone when she worked at Applebee's said "Hi, Jodi".
Do you really think that the jury does not watch any of this on TV when they go home at night? |

IMO, the girl is narcisistic (sp?) and a pathological liar. Don't forget master manipulator.
She believes that she can convince the jury to see things her way. Her narcisism has her believing that what she did was right and just and she can not be possibly punished.
All those details is the pathological lying. The girl wouldn't know the truth if it bit her in the @ss! |

That should be "Jodi".

I'm so glad someone started this thread and I happened to click on it! I saw a show on this a few years ago (it may have been 48 hours, as was already mentioned, but i had thought it was Investigation Discovery or something). Anyway, I just happened to think of the case the other day - it was the camera thing that really stuck with me - and I was wondering how it all turned out. So glad I found this thread, because I hadn't remembered anyone's name.
I'm not going to get into guilt vs innocence, but I'm very sorry that a young person was killed in such a brutal manner.
