From the IRS website:
Jan. 1st
""The IRS is currently reviewing the details of this week's tax legislation and assessing what impact it will have on this year's filing season. The IRS will soon make available additional information on when taxpayers can start filing 2012 tax returns.""
And then Jan. 3rd
"The Internal Revenue Service today released updated income-tax withholding tables for 2013 reflecting this weeks changes by Congress.
The updated tables, issued today after President Obama signed the changes into law, show the new rates in effect for 2013 and supersede the tables issued on December 31, 2012. The newly revised version of Notice 1036 contains the percentage method income-tax withholding tables and related information that employers need to implement these changes. ""
**************************************
So, does that mean we can go ahead and file our taxes? Or that they've just adjusted the tables accordingly, but when to file taxes, is still up in the air?
I want mine done now. I hate waiting. Get it done, out of the way as it literally drives me crazy until they are done. Let alone, ... it would be sort of nice to use a bit of the refund for our trip.
So tax peas? Can we file?

I'm not a tax person, but logic dictates that none of the changes were retroactive so I don't see why this tax filing should be effected. |

It depends on if you efile or not. Last year efile didn't start until January 17th. This year I believe it is not starting until January 22. |

It is possible that there were deductions that were expiring that may have been reinstated with the deal and they need to be ready for that.
That's what I was thinking. For some reason, I always have this irrational fear about getting my taxes done. Like the big bad gov't is watching me, waiting to pounce (or audit... ) So, I need to hurry up and get them done, and out of the way so as to not "perk" their interest. And I don't have anything to hide. It's not like we make huge amounts of money, and our taxes are not complicated. It's a totally weird disturbed view of the IRS. I have no idea why, or where I got this view of them, from. |

I am not an accountant, but I do work in a tax office. So far the only delay that I have heard of is the refunds themselves. Previously the IRS would release estimated dates that refunds would post in your bank account if you filed on XXX day. The turnaround time was approximately 3 weeks, 21 business days. This year they are not giving that info. (I used to print out a chart from IRS.gov that I could look up dates for clients)
They are doing more extensive checks of the taxpayer info because of all of the idenity theft that is occuring. There are returns being filed very early with others SS#'s and the refunds are then posted in a bank account fraudently. The taxpayer does not realize it has happened until they go to file their return legally.
Bottom line- file your return knowing that you may not receive your money in a timely manner or for a certain event. |

It is probably a good view to have. LOL From September of 2010 until early 2012, I was dealing with the IRS on some family business that I took over management of to help keep the peace and to get up-to-date. I found that the IRS is the most inept organization and very difficult to deal with. I am still waiting for the audit notification because I told an agent exactly that during one of my very frustrating times. They are also extremely wasteful. I can't count the number of times I opened my mailbox to a huge stack of letters and there were duplicates of everything. They also mailed all of our personal tax information to someone in Georgia. I only know this because the person called me to let me know they got our information. Thank goodness it wasn't someone interested in identity theft. I never even got an "I'm sorry" from the IRS for that one. |

One in particular that I still haven't found out of they reinstated or not is the sales tax deduction that affects everyone in states with no state income tax and itemize.
If you happen to find out one way or the other, would you peamail me? (I'll be looking too). I pushed several large purchases into this year so as not to spread them out between two years, but if they chnaged it, I'm not going to bother keeping track. |

They retroactively reinstated the residential Energy tax credits for 2012. So if you bought a furnace, air conditioner, windows.... you might have a credit coming.
Here's more info. |

Yes, I will definitely let you know. When I did my initial searches, it might have been too soon to find anything. I did get an email from one of the investment companies that I have money with that did not list this as part of the deal but it wasn't a comprehensive list either. I might email a CPA friend of mine and see if she knows.

Do you already have your W-2 so you can file? We never get my husband's until the end of the month or any of the other documents we need to complete our taxes.
