I'm finally fed up with my sad little Hoover. It's just not great. I know there has to be a lot more dirt in my carpet then I can get out.

I have a friend who sings the praises of her Dyson and I'm leaning in that direction. I don't have pets, but do have two little boys. I'd really like a bag less.

Suggestions? Know of any deals?

I am in love with my Dyson ... it is a number of years old now and I've had absolutely no problems with it ... I do have pets and kids and it picks up everything ... totally worth the money in my opinion

I have a Dyson also. It does a much better job than my previous Eureka and Kenmore vacuums.

I bought a Miele upright. I think that it does a better job than my Dyson. We have 3 dogs.

Okay, I have a Hoover wind tunnel and a dyson. The Hoover wins---Hands down. It is so much stronger in suction. I always say my dyson sucks, no really it sucks. I have to go over the same spot 2 or 3 times. My hoover feels like it is sucking the carpet off the floor.

Replaced my 15 yr old Hoover with this baby. I borrowed my friend's Dyson for about a week when my Hoover died, and was pretty sold that my next one would be the Dyson Animal. But, when I went to the vacuum place to buy it and saw the side by side comparison with the Dyson and the Simplicity, I came home with the Simplicity.

I have 22 yr old builder's carpeting in most of our home, two teenagers and two cats- one of which is a long haired tabby. My carpets don't show their age at all and I'm amazed at how much less dust I find on my end tables. It must be doing something good.

I, too, am looking for a new vacuum. There is no way we are paying for a dyson, I know they are great and probably worth the money, but I just have other places I want to spend my money.

If you have a lower priced vacuum, please jump in with your two cents. It may not be as good as a dyson, but if you still think it does a decent job, please let us know.

Hopefully I am not hijacking the OP's thread. If I am, say so, and I'll bow out.

For the OP, we have a Bissell. It's one of the ones designed "for pets". I researched before buying and the reviews said it worked very well on un-carpeted floors, not so well on carpet. Well, they seemed to all be better on one flooring-type and worse on another. Since the front of the house is a natural stone floor, I went with one that did well on hard surfaces. My husband hates the vac because it doesn't clean the bedroom carpets. I have lower expectations after my research. We had 3 cats and a dog. Now we have 2 cats and a dog. The tools for cleaning after pets certainly weren't made for our pets.

I got a Dyson Animal DC17, I think 2 years ago in November and worth every penny. I was lucky and got my on clearance at $200 less. The Hoover I had before was good but this blew it out of the water.

I like it better than the new Kirby someone loaned me for a couple of weeks.

I know you said you want a bagless, but really the ones with bags do a much better job of trapping and keeping all the dust. They are much better if you have allergies. I love my Miele upright. It has two HEPA filters, for one thing. At least watch the video on Miele's website.

Just one more post!

100% Dyson fan here. I had a Kirby then an Amway vac... switched to the various Hoover's over the years and finally bought a Dyson last December. Best investment ever!

Seriously, there is not a better vacuum out there than the Rainbow and you'll make an initial investment, but it will pay off! I know people who have Rainbows over 25 years old and they are going strong. We have had one for as long as I can recall and it is phenomenal!

We had a 'very good' vacuum and were asked to vacuum and tell them when it was 100% clean. We did that, they ran the Rainbow over it and I was DISGUSTED at how much crap came up out of my carpet! My husband thought it was a trick, dumped the water and started over after seriously inspecting the unit. Nope--authentic!

Amazingly wonderful machine!

Does anyone remember what particular model you have? Wondering if the two of you who said you liked something other than your Dyson, had a less than ideal model.

We bought 2 Kenmore bagless vacs from Sears about 13 years ago. One was for our house, one was for our store.

The one in our house is still going strong.

When we closed our store, we donated that vac to our Boy Scout camp. It lives in a two bedroom pre-fab home at the camp. Still going strong.

I would buy another Kenmore in a heartbeat if I needed to replace either one. But I don't.

I had a pink Dyson that was a Target only model. Loved it at first. No pets, 3 messy boys and a husband that track dirt and mud all over. Lasted only about 3 years. Now I have a $99 vacuum from Target. Not even sure what brand. Need a new one again!

Just bought a Dyson animal mid December. Used a 30% off coupon at Kohl's. Worth every penny, can't believe I waited so long to get it. I use it on carpet, hardwood and ceramic floors. Best investment I've made.

I know that people initially complain about Dyson's being so expensive but they are so worth the money. I got one using my brother's Target discount (he was an employee) at the time. It has lasted 6 years. My husband is a non-believer but when we moved in together his vacuum died right after we moved in and he has had to use the Dyson. No complaints from me though. I think it's a great vacuum, and considering it is still going after 6 years it has more than paid for itself.

I hate hate hate my dyson. From about the 4 month point you will vacuum for a few minutes and it loses suction and makes the most horrendous noise. I had it fixed twice and I am NOT hard on vacuums at all. It's been sitting unused. I despise that stupid thing.

I bought a Shark for around $180 and completely love it.

I would buy another Kenmore in a heartbeat

This. We bought a Kenmore canister in 1997, and just now we're in the market for a new one. Seriously, that thing's worked for 16 years!

My Dyson worked great for the two years before it died. What a huge waste of money!

Currently loving my Shark lift away professional. It came with a dusting tool for my hardwoods that I love! I researched quite a bit and most of the time this vac outranked Dyson.

We love our Dyson. Even after 4 years it still picks up a ridiculous amount of dirt. We always joke that it could suck the chrome off a bumper.

We've been very happy w/ our Silver King. It's one of those ridiculous in-home demo $3000 things, but we got it for $100 (one hundred - not one thousand!) on Craig's List.

I don't agree with the person that said you need a bag to trap all the dust and you need bags if you have allergies. All the vacuums with the bags spewed out dust and makes me cough when I'm vacuuming.

The Dyson, NO, it doesn't have bags AND I can breathe when I'm vacuuming. It is so nice to vacuum and not have the vacuum make me cough. I just take it outside and dump it in the trash outside.

I had an Oreck for over 10 years and had to geta new one after having the Oreck fixed a couple of times. I wanted something lightweight like the Oreck (8 lbs) so I went searching and found this one on Amazon with good reviews.

Hoover Platinum Lightweight Upright Vacuum with Canister

I got it and so far I like it. When I used it the first time I realized how little my Oreck was actually doing towards the end. This one is still light enough (12 lbs) and is doing a great job so far.
