Am helping a friend plan her trip to Disney and thought I had been covering it all with her - that was until my son walked up and told her about his favorite part of Disney, which she was thrilled to find out about and had no idea it was there...

Did you know there is a toy store in Epcot in the Japan section that sells fun non-Disney toys - his favorite is the HUGE display of Pokemon toys and I love shopping around in the Hello Kitty items.

Also you can take a boat from Hollywood Studios (boat ramp is to the left as you leave) that takes you to the back entrance of Epcot, which drops you off in the country section - just a short walk to Japan.

Would love to share new helpful info with her when we ge together this weekend. Thanks!

Bring one Brita filter water bottle and a couple empty water bottles with you. When you stop for water, fill the Brita bottle and squeeze the filtered water into the empty bottles. Then add your flavoring packets. This way you are always only carrying around empty water bottles which are much lighter (obviously). Plus, then you can make your own iced tea and lemonade with filtered water. I love the Lipton cold brew tea bags and would make myself an iced tea every afternoon.

Because the water bottles are basically free (except for the flavoring), just dump it when your break is over and put the empty bottles in your carrier/bag.

Here are the Brita bottles we purchased:

Just so you know, the boat from DHS takes you to the International Gateway which is the back entrance to Epcot. It's essentially between France and England.

The store in Japan is our favorite. They have fun gifts and snacks, you can go in and they will dress you in a kimono and let you get your pictures taken (adults and children). I love those pictures of my teenage girls.

Sleep in and stay for the extra magic hours. The kids rides have no lines during the parades or during extra magic hours. I guess most people want their kids to go to bed early and watch the parades. Haha

Be careful not to overwhelm the Disney newbie! I wanted to learn everything before I went the first time, but I have discovered that many people aren't like me - they are easily overwhelmed.

Every counter service restaurant will give you a cup of water for free, even if you aren't purchasing anything else.

Wait until the end of the week to purchase souvenirs, unless there is something obviously unique to that store. Many items can be found in any park, and after a cooling off period, some won't be as interesting.

In that same store in the Japan pavilion, they have a pearl station where they do a fun ceremony and open an oyster with a pearl in it for you. You can buy jewelry to go with your pearl, but you'll find the pearl cages on eBay much cheaper.

If you are going during peak season, pay extra to get out of the crowds, if you are able. Do the Fantasmic dinner package, the Candlelight Processional, the Fireworks Dessert party, etc. These aren't as necessary or as time-saving at non-peak times.

The Phineas and Ferb game in Epcot is almost as fun for grownups as for kids.

If there is a sign that says not to pull a rope (like outside Indiana Jones), go ahead and pull it. If Disney really doesn't want you getting to something, you won't be able to get to it.

That store is among our favorites, and ALL Of us love it, not just the kids! You can buy these gorgeous handheld fans there, and the ladies at the checkout will put a name on them for you in Japanese characters for no extra charge!

My best tip is to make sure to talk to everyone who works in any of the countries at Epcot. Almost all of them are college students or young people from that country, and it is so much fun to find out all about where they are from and what their country is really like.

Here is another tip. At HOllywood Studios, go in the store that you come out into after you take the art of animation tour. There is an area where a Disney artist works while you watch. I spent an hour watching this guy the last time we were there, he was hand coloring cells and he was telling me about how his wife was also an artist there, all of the things they had worked on, etc.

We couldn't get our 17 year old DD out of that store!! She is a HUGE Anime/Manga fan, so she was ready to set up a tent and live in the Japan pavilion. Close second was the UK pavilion shop with all the Beatles stuff!

A lot of the world showcase stores at epcot sell non-disney items. I like the bowls in Japan and dinnerware in France. Jackets and sweaters in Norway.

Have a best friend who's daughter works @ AK ... she was our very own personal tour guide, AND she hooked us up with an extra day!

Seriously, I don't know what we would have done without her, there is so much to see and do, and she made sure that we got the best out of our time at the parks.

If your friend has young children please advise her to bring lots of hand sanitizer a surprising number of the bathrooms not only don't have the kid friendly sinks but also place the soap way too far back on the wall /counter for anyone who isn't grown up size to use and still hard even if you lift your child up.
Have fun!

I second this! I had a delightful conversation with a Scottish girl in the UK section, and with a French girl in the France section.

Ice water is free at any counter service location on property. Just ask for whatever size you want and how ever many you need. No need to carry around bottles of water. We usually take just one bottle in case we get stuck in line for a long time.

Also, a hard sided travel soap box is great for keeping your park tickets and drivers license in. It's waterproof and snaps closed. No need to risk your wallet.

Ask the cast members for the best viewing spots for the parade - they have always told me of the lesser crowded viewing areas and they really are great views of the parade.

Rubbermaid makes a water bottle with a filter in it. Brita makes one too, but the Rubbermaid one had higher scores on Amazon. Those free cups of ice water and water from the fountains kept us hydrated without breaking the bank on bottled water.

Get a passport at one of the shops in EPCOT. There's a page for each country and as you go through World Showcase, there are stations where you can get your passport stamped, and a representative of that country will write a greeting along with your child's name in their language.

We eat at the Pattiserie for lunch so that we can splurge on dinner. A ham and cheese croissant is under $3.

a lot of people don't know that you can get your hair cut at the magic kingdom. the barber shop is right before main street. reservations are available or you can walk in and wait. if you just want a hair design with glitter and confetti that is also available. first haircuts come with a certificate and mickey ears embroidered with first haircut on the back.

if you are staying for extra magic hours and have children who want to meet characters then check if they will be available. tinkerbell can normally be up to a two hour wait-we went late at night both times and had less than a ten minute wait.

We LOVE pressed pennies. We take an M&M mini container and 'prefill' it before we leave. 2 quarters/penny, 2 quarters/penny, etc. Then we're ready-to-go at every pressed-penny station. We also buy one of those pressed penny collector's albums to store them in and keep it with us so we don't lose our treasures.

Probably is advice that is available elsewhere, but I always get to the park when it opens. You can get in several popular attractions and rides quickly and then devote the more crowded afternoon to less popular things.

1. Stay at Floridays 2bed 2 bath condos down the street

2. Eat at Chevy Chase near downtown Disney or at cafe Tu tu tango on international drive.

3. The Disney water parks are awesome on an overcast day / no sunburns & no crowds.

4. Norway Princess dinner at Epcot is awesome - make sure to make reservations.

5. Get Epcot Soaring fast passes first thing.

6. There are real bunnies around the castle & at Epcot.

7. I asked my 9 year old daughter if she knew any Disney secrets & she leaned in and whispered "the princesses aren't real!"

8. Bring a back full of snacks & water.

Most of the big rides have a line available for single riders. If you have someone who just wants to ride, they can go thru the singles lines and will be put in the first extra space available. My DD really enjoyed this last time we were there for the rides that DH and I didn't care to ride. Her wait time was usually less than 20 minutes for a ride with a group wait of over 2hours.

If you go to DHS and see someone with a small American Idol placard or a "Vote for Me" placard around their neck, they have won one of the small AI competitions. They will be competing for the chance to audition for the real AI later in the evening. Make their day and ask for their autograph or ask them some questions about when they'll be performing. The winner is decided by audience participation, so most are happy to stop and chat. When DD won, two little (12 years or so) boys followed her around the park - her first groupies!

Here is my tip - don't spend money on stuff that is hype there but once you get home it is just a bunch of wasted money.

An example of this: those pins on a lanyard. They are overpriced and unless you are going to take many trips there and get into trading them, there is no need to buy them. My kids' lanyards full of pins have been in their closets since we got hone 10 years ago.

Another example is the commemorative mugs that you can get at each place and get refills. You don't need a collection of those when you get home.

Some people are into those, but I spent alot of money on that stuff and it was just for the hype at the time.

My choice is to not take it personally - people have opinions. Particularly people here.-Peabay 12/29/11

My advice was the passports in Epcot as well. The best souvenir my kids have from Disney.

The thing about Disney is there is too much to do, you can't get it all in on your first trip so you have to pick and choose and save some for the next trip.

My sister and her family are going for the first time and I gave her a ton of advice: make your dining reservations early, book any extras like the Pirate Leauge, Bibbity Boutique, etc and she kind of blew it all off like they were going to "wing it". Which is fine, I think your first trip you really have to get a feel for it, it's like a trial run.

Seriously?!!? I want to get my hair done!!

I do NOT take a purse or bag anymore. If you dont have little kids, try to skip the bag. No bag check lines, baby!
I have my lanyard and pouch. The pouch I use is black, and has 3 pockets. Just big enough for my key to the workd, id, some cash, lip balm, photo pass card, and a couple of tummy pills (I have stomach issues). I keep a folded plastic baggie in my pocket in case of rain, to throw my camera and phone into. That's it. My hubby even just wears a lanyard now with his key to the world, id, and a credit card.

Eventthough I burn REALLY easily, if I sunscreen up real well before we had to the parks, I don't burn, even without reapplying during the day.

Eat at Earl of Sandwich in downtown Disney...our fav! Also, I usually buy my kids some Disney souvenir type stuff before we go. Stuff to keep them busy on the plane and in the hotel rooms at night (lots of stuff from dollar tree or dollar spot @ target), Disney PJs, and T-shirts (often from Walmart). I've also made us some matching t-shirts. My kids were 13 and 16 now but if/when we go again I think they will be expecting these things.

We went to Disneyland a couple if years ago and all the days we were there the park was practically empty. Superbowl Sunday was the exception. The park was crazy busy that day, which completely surprised us.

We just got back. I used a cross body purse (Vera Bradley hipster) that was the BEST. Small outside pocket held our park passes/room keys and fast passes. I limited what was inside the purse and never had to think about it, the whole trip.

If you're going to get autographs with your pictures, you're better off getting a spiral sketch book from Michaels...smaller sized, of course. It's easier to have a book you can open all the way without having to hold it open. Plus- there are more pages and room to put the pictures in when you get home. Also- find a bigger pen - usually in the dollar store or dollar section of Michaels. It's easier for the characters to manage a bigger pen.

We picked up a case of water at Costco at the beginning of the week. It was great to have a supply.

I had a small calendar in my purse where I wrote down reservation numbers for the day. That's also where I had all confirmation numbers for the trip- flight, etc.

Best photo tip I ever read: get the 'from behind' shot. I have pictures of DH carrying sleepy kids back to our room, the kids holding hands with the castle in the background, DH and a grown up DS standing over a map in a busy park. Every once in awhile, drop back and take a picture. They can be so much better than the traditional posed picture. Actually- that's a good thing to do all year. Some of my favorite pictures are the ones I dropped back to get.

Stop at the dollar store and buy some of the glow in darks sticks, keeps the kids entertained at night and you don't have to buy the $$ ones
there. The kids can always pass some out to their new found friends and have fun .....

Ask the photo pass photographer to take your picture with your own camera. Along with the one they take.

If you do want to do the pin trading...which my kids loved, you can order huge lots of pins on eBay for cheap cheap cheap. Pins in the park average 7-12 bucks. You can get dozens of them from eBay for pennies.

My kids loved the pin trading once they understood what it was all about. I ended up ordering some pins to complete some sets my DD had started. Before our next trip I bought several large lots of pins from eBay that we could use for trade. We still ended up buying new ones, but not that many and we got a lot of cool ones by trading with cast members.

And if you do get into pin trading, there's a certain colored lanyard that cast members wear and they only trade with children.

Take a photo with your phone of all your tickets in case they get lost. I also write my name and address and hotel info with the date on an index card and take a photo of that with my camera. If I should somehow misplace my camera and someone turns it in, it'll be easy to track me down.

IF you are big on planning you might consider www.tourguidemike.com. Awesome site, costs $19.95. He used to be a tour guide for Disney. I learned a ton from his site. And you're talking to someone who practically grew up at MK and EPCOT. I lived in FL growing up not that far and we were there all the time.

ETA: be very careful at a waterpark on an overcast day. I lived in FL for almost twenty years and worked at a watermark as well. People think they don't need sunscreen. You can get terrible sunburns when it is overcast. Sometimes we would see second degree burns. The water in the clouds act as tiny magnifying glasses so you can burn faster on cloudy days.

YES!!!! I use this trick all the time, but it was especially valuable at WDW. I think my favorite pic this year is from behind with my son sitting on DH's shoulders with the Castle in the background. I have another with them holding hands walking down the resort hallway.

Note: The current wisdom on Disboards is NOT to go with Tourguide Mike. Apparently there've been some personal problems or something that have led to the website/information falling to the wayside and being terribly out of date. Many people who've previously used - and liked - TGM are now advising AGAINST using him.

we purchased my daughter a cheap disney shirt at a gas station in florida with all the characters on it. instead of having characters sign an autograph book we had her take the shirt around. i did stick a piece of cardboard in the shirt to make it easier to sign. bigger pens or permanent markers are easier for the characters to use. now she has a shirt as a souvenir that could even be framed.

Probably not for a first-timer, but for someone looking to do something different: We took a tour of the trains the last time we went to Disney World. It wasn't cheap (birthday gift for dh) and we had to get up at the crack of dawn, but it was amazing. We were in the park before it opened. Turned out there was only one other person on our tour.

Another tip I thought to tell her (and share here) was that is is a good idea to take a picture of your photo card you give to cast members to take pictures. If you lose it it is no big deal once you get home since all you need is the number off of the card to get to your pictures.

Thanks for all of the other great info! A lot of it I didn't know - and we have been 5 times!!!!

The Disney water parks are awesome on an overcast day / no sunburns

Worst sunburn I ever got was on an overcast day. Please use
sunscreen regardless of whether the sun is out or not.

If you're a golfer, take your clubs.

- Grab your Dole Whip at Aloha Isle and then backtrack a bit back towards the castle to sit down. The area directly across from Aloha Isle is a smoking area <yuck>. So if you walk back a ways, there's a nice little area that gets very little foot traffic. Good for a snack break .

- In Epcot, the American Adventure is a great place for kids to grab a nap. Works for my kids at least.

- Epcot - The Phineas and Ferb adventures are a lot of fun for the kids. Try to do them before dark though. We had a tough time trying to do one at night right before Illuminations - we couldn't see well enough to find the clues.

- Don't know how old your kids are, but if you have 'too short' for some rides kids, be sure to use the baby swap. Just take the 'baby' and ask the CM's at the fastpass entrance for one. Then the second parent and two others can ride again without having to wait in line. Using this, my big kids were able to ride everything twice.

Ask the photographer to take the special magic shots. If they cant do it, ask which area to go to for them. Things like you holding Tinkerbell, Simba, etc. I wanted the one with the pirate duel, but we couldnt find that particular person.

leave a change of clothes and a towel in your car, in case you get soaked on a ride and its an overcast day.
