We have a Pea volunteer for Tuesdays Sewing Topic. Scrapbrat1 will take over on Tuesday and introduce the sewing topics. It will be in the sewing clothing and costume line of discussion and whatever she decides will be good topics in the sewing clothing line.

Thank you Scrapbrat1 !

Sunday: Sewing machines and tools - Hosted by thebiscuitscraps
Monday: Quilting Techniques - Hosted by thebiscuitscraps
Tuesday: Sewing Clothing, Costumes, etc. - Hosted by Scrapbrat1
Wednesday: Quilting Share your quilts and pinned sites - Hosted by thebiscuitscraps
Thursday: Sewing Techniques Home Arts - hosted by Slicksister
Friday: Quilting machines and tools - hosted by RST
Saturday: Sewing Share What you have made or pinned - Hosted by Gale W

Do you/did you make your children's clothes?
Share some things you have made in that line.
Share some things you have pinned that you plan to make.

My Mom made almost all mine and my sister's clothes, many of my DD's clothes. I made a few things for my DD, but, as I have said before...fitting is not my favorite thing to do.

Here is my Pinterest board for children's clothing. If I ever have a granddaughter, I just may try my hand at it again.

This is my first time for this subject. I LOVE sewing but don't always have time. I did finish a piece for my teen yesterday. He has never had a pair of sweats to fit him, so I drafted him some to fit. He is tall and skinny, if I purchase a pair, I either have to tack up the waistband or diaper pin it. I was pretty proud of my piece. He was excited too.

I think we need to also add favorite patterns to this discussion. I will post more later.

Great idea, Laura, about patterns. I could also add mending, upcycling and alterations. More ideas welcomed.

Please make any suggestions to our list of topics to help those of us who start these conversations.

Here's the list, help us expand it so we don't have as much overlap.
Sunday: Sewing machines and tools - Hosted by thebiscuitscraps
Monday: Quilting Techniques - Hosted by thebiscuitscraps
Tuesday: Sewing Techniques Dressmaking
Wednesday: Quilting Share your quilts and pinned sites - Hosted by thebiscuitscraps
Thursday: Sewing Techniques Home Arts - hosted by Slicksister
Friday: Quilting machines and tools - hosted by RST
Saturday: Sewing Share What you have made or pinned - Hosted by Gale W

I would love to make some sweatpants if I could get a pattern to fit...without having to alter. Hmmmm...

My favorite subject! I have been sewing the majority of my girls clothes since they were toddlers. They still like most of them so I keep sewing! Although they are getting too opinionated!

My favorite childrens patterns are Ottobre Design. They are a magazine of about 40 patterns that are produced in Finland 4 times a year. My girls love that no one else at school is wearing the same thing they are!

I make most of their clothes, jackets (not winter coats though), underwear, accessories like hairbows and purses. Sewing is one thing that I enjoy a lot!

this is a baby snowsuit for new baby!

A skirt for middle dd for family pictures

A pair of pants that neither of my 2 older girls will wear. Boo! They claim they look like Elvis pants....

A little outfit for new baby. I made it for her coming home outfit based on the sizes of my previous babies. But #3 was my smallest baby so its a little big still!

I could go on all day! But I will stop here and direct you to my blog if you want!

I wish I could find Ottobre around here. I have even looked at the B&N nearest to my home but didn't see it that day. It's a bit of a drive to get there, so we don't go often.

I sew quite a bit for my kids. For Christmas I made the middle dd a red blouse and the youngest dd a fur vest. I also sewed a pair of pj pants for all my kids. they get those every year. This is my favorite little kids' pj pattern. Not because of the top but because of the bottoms. they don't have a side seam so they sew up super quick and are very comfortable.

I don't do as much sewing as I plan on. I have so many projects for the kids I never get done. Half the fabric I have around the house was purchased for something specific that never got made up.

My favorite form children's clothing is smocking and I made almost 100 pieces (many of them matching) for my 3 kids. After several years off, I have started back sewing. It is harder to see this time around!

My favorite pattens are Childrens Corner and Michie Mooney.

There is an onslaught of smocked clothing being produced abroad, but I still love being able to say "I made it !!!"

Kelly, My 10 year old dd would love those pants - How fun! I can't believe your girls won't wear them! (to be fair, my dd probably has no idea who Elvis is!)

I've posted this before, but I recently made this Modkids Emma Pattern
I used pink and green swiss dot to make the "petals" of the skirt and top and boy, that was hard to sew on my machine. It would have been better if I had a serger or something to do the edges/hems with. But overall, I loved how detailed the directions were and for a first project back to sewing in years and years it was great!

I made Kyoko Tweens for my oldest niece for Christmas, and then for her American Girl doll the Mini Kyoko , and for her little sister the Kyoko dress. It was the first real clothing sewing I had done since Jr. High. And they turned out great. I will definitely be buying more of the Modkids patterns in the future. I had been using freezer paper - tracing patterns on to the paper so I didn't have to cut the pattern up. But then someone at the quilting store I buy fabric at recommended this stuff you get at joann's that has a light grid on it and is the thickness of interfacing but a holds together better. I like it because it is much more flexible than the freezer paper. I just can't justify spending $10+ on a pattern that has multiple sizes and then cutting it up and only getting to use one size. So that is my way around it!

Oh how I love to sew little dresses. I have 4 grandgirlies so I will be sewing them for years to come! I sewed so many little dresses for my daughter and I sewed for my DS too but not as much.

Here's a blog post about some dresses I made for my 3 oldest grand girlies.

5 Dresses in 3 1/2 Days!

I'm going out now but I will look at all the blogs and links in a couple of hours when I get back home.

Also - Carol - I was wondering if it might be possible for us to name our group or find out a way to start all our posts the same so it is easier to find them on a daily basis. Some thing like - SEW MUCH FUN then all the info? I dunno, just a thought. Sew Much Fun is really hokey but it's just an example of what I'm thinking or.

kellybelly77 are all the patterns included in the magazine? How does it work? I am very tempted to subscribe to them, but it is hard without seeing what I would actually get. I looked at their shop on etsy and was thinking of ordering one of the ones off there to get an idea of whether I would want to subscribe.

I love to sew for my kiddos but do not have as much opportunity to do it now that they are older.

This is a link to some Ottobre items I have made for them.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/10735938@N05/sets/72157606436698324/

This is also an Ottobre I made for my daughter 4 or 5 years ago

A cheer leader costume I made for my older daughter around the same time

And a summer outfit for the same daugher

I have many more items but do not have them uploaded to share. My younger daughter has asked for a Jean jumper with a heart applique for her birthday (Feb. 12th) I will be starting that this week.

My blog is kellybellybags

You can search my blog for Ottobre patterns to see what all is out there. You can also go to their website and look at each issue to see what is included. If you subscribe they are about $15 or so each for 40 patterns. You can subscribe for one year at their website or buy each issue seperately at certain online sewing stores. They really are a great deal!

The skirt is the only thing that is not Ottobre. The pattern is Farbenmix Insa. A German pattern company.

mom2-2beagles- all the patterns are included. You have to trace them though. The pattern sheets can be tricky sometimes since all the patterns overlap. There are 6 pattern sheets and each pattern is colorcoded.

It's been a few years since I sewed clothes for my daughters. Never anything too complicated. Simple skirts and pajama pants. I have a few of those Modkids patterns I never used.

Not any more, but when my kids were small and the grandkids I sewed a lot of their clothes. I used to make the grandkids matching flannel nightgowns and pajamas every Christmas. I especially loved making heirloom style dresses for the girls. Ruffles, lace inserts, entredeux. Too bad they grow out of that style so soon.

I love Ottobre patterns. You can buy issues at Sewzanne's website. The instructions are easy to follow, and the patterns fit well.

My girls have hit the stage where Mom's sewing is totally uncool. they do prefer my PJ pants, though.

I love sewing clothes for my kids, but usually it's my girls I sew for (I haven't had a lot of luck finding good boy patterns.) I've sewn a lot of twirly skirts, pjs, dresses and jumpers. I just joined a pattern club at Pink Fig Design , their stuff is very cute and girlie. I can't wait to check out all the other sites peas have suggested on this thread!

Carol, I saved the link from your pin board about making kid's pants out of adult t-shirts.

There are so many cute girly clothes and dresses, but it is rare that I find something cute, fun, and easy to make for a little boy.

Thanks for sharing and thanks for these threads!

I made a few things for my kids when they were little. I'll have to find pics and scan them-it was before I had a digital camera. I made my dd a denim jacket out of old jeans and lined it with old sweatshirt fabric and painted mickey and minnie on the back. I still have it so I can take a pic of it later. I also made her a fleece hoodie out of old sweats-it was color blocked (different color for the hood, sleeves, etc). I also made quite a few things out of new fabrics. My favorite patterns were always the ones from independent companies. Sewbaby was a pretty popular catalog here. I had a couple of simple patterns that I designed in it and my son was a model on both pattern covers but they have since changed the one he was the cover model on.

this is my son on the pattern cover-he was about 18 mos at the time-this is the old copy

here he is on the back of the other pattern. He was a couple months old here.

I still have a few copies of the patterns. I should do a giveaway on my blog or something.

Gale, what a happy, happy baby! I'm a push over for babies.

Is that chair/cart sling easy to make? Looking for a very easy pattern and I like the fact you can use that one in a chair and a grocery cart.

Remember, it has been years since I have sewn, so I'm looking for very simple. New grandbaby coming in Aug is making all kinds of project whirl around in my head.

You are my new best friend!! I just got my first issue of Ottobre and I am in love!! I ordered the Spring 2011 one from their etsy shop so I could get an idea of what it was like before I subscribed. I am so excited!! I just had a baby boy (he is 2 weeks) and was frustrated because I was having a hard time finding boy patterns...no longer!!

Thank you so much for recommending it!!

I haven't ventured into sewing kid's clothing yet. My mother made a lot of my daughter's clothing, and mine when I was a child. I have a children clothing pinboard however that is loaded with tons of fun clothing ideas for kids, and I hope to start with simple pillowcase dresses for my GD. You can find my children's board here:

I also have boards for other things you can sew such as:
Shoes
Lot's of ideas for doll clothes here:

I have a ton of sewing and quilting boards as well.

I don't have time right now to read all of the posts here, but I have to say I am so happy to see this thread! I got my sewing machine back out about a month ago to help sew costumes for my dd12's play that she was in. I really loved doing it. Now I'd like to try some other projects. I have tons of fabric. Just have to find some time! I'll be back to read later!

Mom2-2beagles- Yay! You will love them! I have made a ton of stuff out of the 1/2011 issue. My fave is 1/2009. I swear I have made most everything in there!

Also the sewing mama website has a forum for reviewing Ottobre patterns. Just go to sewingmamas.com and click on forums in the top right corner. Then scroll down to the Otto forum. The forum is separated out by date so you can look at any issue. Then within each issue you can look at any of the patterns. It's really handy because you can see if something tends to run short or has other issues. Plus you can see other design ideas! I am kellybelly77 over there also!

I used to have an etsy shop of just childrens clothes, back before kids started in dance!

It was SO much fun!

Now my kids are big, and I have a lot less sewing time available. If I sew for anyone, it generally dance clothes for Baylie.

How difficult are the Ottobre patterns? I've done quilting but I've never made clothing.....are they too complicated for a beginner?

I'm looking for a sewing for children message board. Had to laugh when I was directed via Google to Two Peas. I've been a 2 peas follower for years for scrapbooking!!! Does anyone know where I might find a mb that is just about sewing for kids? Thanks!
