I feel irate right now. I'll lay out the facts and then explain why I'm irate.
I live in a tiny town that does not have tax-funded trash removal.
There is one and only one private company from which we are supposed to buy stickers to place on our bags to have them collected.
Each sticker is $2.75! Each bag can not weigh over 35 LBs.
There is no landfill or dump you can drive your trash to yourself without paying exorbitant fees.
There is no collected recycling in my town. You have to drive it to the recycling center yourself.
So, I end up paying a pretty penny to dispose of my garbage. I have no choice.
And here is why I am irate:
Very late the night before trash day (they collect it before 7am on trash day) I put out my trash. SOME LOWLIFE CAREFULLY PEELED THE STICKERS OFF MY BAGS AND STOLE THEM! The private owned company therefore did not collect my trash this week.
I called the company. There is nothing they can do. They know people are stealing stickers. They know I buy the stickers. But the trash collectors are instructed to only collect bags with stickers.
I feel like I live in the twilight zone. Has it really come down to this?! Stealing stickers off trash bags in the middle of the night?!
Does anyone else live in a town that doesn't have tax funded trash collection?
What branch of local or state government would I contact to discuss trash collection being funded through taxes so that I could have more reliable trash service?

That just really sucks.
We don't have garbage pickup either. You have to contract with a private garbage and recycling hauler. We don't have to deal with stickers though - we have specific bins they give us.
Sounds like you'll have to put your garbage out in the morning from now on. |

We have a transfer station that's funded through stickers and taxes. We don't have any trash pickup though. You have to contract through a private company if you want that. We haul everything on Saturdays. It's the town gossip central location, lol.
I'd talk to the head of the DPW and ask how it works.

We have city trash, but I live in a townhome complex, so we have our own private trash pickup. There is no limit to the number of bags either - just no heavy trash.

I know, this is insane!
I grew up in a large city where all trash and recycling was collected by the city. You could put out anything. Old sofas. Refrigerators. Absolutely anything and they'd take it.
When we moved here a few years ago, we never even thought to ask if trash and sanitation was handled through the township. We assumed because we'd never been anywhere that didn't handle it that way. |

Wow. That's kinda messed up. We have two private companies so at least there is a little competition in our town. We pay about $25 a month.
We have a slightly different problem; trash cans getting knocked over or overfilled by strangers and since there is an extra charge for overfilled cans, this can be problematic. So, we don't put our trash out until we hear them rolling through our neighborhood in the morning. In my town, leaving it out overnight is just inviting trouble.

Never heard of stickers for trash pick up. That seems a bit expensive. Our trash pickup is billed along with our property tax each year. It is a little over $200 per year. Before we moved here, there were 3 companies to choose from. You chose and then were billed quarterly. There were and are places available to carry trash to, if there was a need.
The only thing that I might suggest it to set your trash out in the morning, as close to pickup time as you can. We never put ours out at night, because of the risk of wild animals getting into the cans.
ETA: Our trash can and recycle bin are provided for free by the pick-up company. |

Stickers? That's really odd.
We have to pay for trash removal. We have specific bins - one for recyclables, one for yard clippings/food waste, and one for the rest. Trucks come by each week to empty them, and we get a monthly bill. |

we have private trash pick up with no stickers.
However, you can get your trash bill down quite a bit by recycling, even if you have to drive it there (how far is the closest?) I have a big bin for paper. Our college makes paper pellets for heating fuel so getting rid of paper is easy here. I also keep a bag for glass which they also accept.
I used to have a place I could recycle cans but they closed. I now keep them all in a bag and take them to a scrap metal place in town where ppl drop off their metal for free and these guys sell the metal. I'll bet you dollars to donuts someone in your town does scrap metal.
Will your work place let you put your recycling in with theirs?
Lastly, I'd put a big slab of packing tape over the sticker and then not put it out until early morning. |

Wow, that's a really poorly-tho9ut out, crappy set-up! Shame on them.
We don't have funded trash service. There are private companies in the area, but one company basically has a monopoly since apparently they have aquired all the smaller companies, and will not allow you to switch Each development usually goes with one company. We pay a set monthly fee and we each get a large dumpster to put our trash in that they collect weekly. So no problems with the trash. |

We pay about $30/month for twice weekly trash and once weekly recycle pickup. No stickers, just labeled bins.
We pay plenty in taxes but it's not included and is contracted through a private hauler. There are at least 3 or so that service our area. When I switched from one to another my bill dropped by almost 1/2. It sucks to be without competition and at the mercy of the fees of one hauler. |

We pay a quarterly fee ($60) to a private company, but there are at least 2 or 3 to choose from. And each company generally comes once per week. The recycling is also done by the same company, but a different truck.

When our town started charging for trash pickup, it was the bag, not the sticker that showed you were paying. You could purchase a roll of kitchen bags (10 maybe?) for five dollars or a roll of five large bags for four. They were pretty distinct colors and the trash collectors would only pick those bags up off of the curb.
Maybe you could suggest something similar, but those are expensive stickers to have stolen on a regular basis. I hate it when my trash has to hang around for an extra week. |

We have to pay but they give you the bins as well. We have three one for regular trash, one for recyclables and then one for yard waste. We pay about $27 a month. You can't overfill them and you only get the tree cans unless you pay for extra cans. You can call for large trash pick up and depending on the item they may or may not pick it up. I think you get 2 per year. I am glad we don't have to pay by the bag but wish we could put more out some weeks - most of the time our bins are mostly empty but every once in a while it would be nice to put out extra. |

in our town it is not funded by taxes, we are billed quarterly for trash removal. We just got a separate recycling program. In a situation like yours I would be pissed. i wonder why they can't print on the bags rather than having separate stickers?

No trash pick up here. We pay $125.00 every three months for service. As for your stickers, I think I'd set my alarm to get the garbage out in the morning. We don't put ours out until the morning as we live on a nasty corner. Our recycle guy is here around 6 am and the garbage guy anywhere between 8 and 5. |

We are unincorporated so no funded trash service here. We have three private services to choose from though and nothing like what you have. We just pay a set fee each month. No problems at all.
This is how we do it except there are 20+ companies to choose from. I've never heard of stickers and that company is lower than low for not addressing a situation they are well aware of. I can't believe they didn't have a better response.
Maybe try your county government? They may have heard about this or have some additional information.

up until a few months ago, I did. we went from tax funded free trash collection to a bag system-you buy special colored bags and all trash has to be put in those bags. seems like that is a better option than stickers someone can peel off
people weren't too happy about the change but they got used to it. you could bring your trash to the dump and pay but it was a minimum $10 charge even if you just had a few bags so most folks either bought the bags or saved up their trash for a once a month or so trip
I thought the whole thing pretty much sucked but learned to live with it.
our current town has no trash pick up-you either pay a private collector to come get it or bring it yourself to the dump. the dump sticker is around $200 and then you renew it yearly at a cost of around $35
I wish I had appreciated the free and easy pick up when I had it-I totally took it for granted! |

Free Bird - We do drive our recycling out the the center. I couldn't imagine how expensive it would be to throw away all our recyclables.
I wish we had some kind of competition in trash service here, but it's such a small town (under a thousand residents) that there just isn't.
I just can't get over the fact that someone stole trash stickers. It's not the dollar value stolen that bothers me, it's the fact that someone went in front of my property and stole from me that bothers me. |

This was my initial thought when reading the OP. Make your stickers too darned much trouble to peel off.
I must say I find the business of trash pickup fascinating (no doubt many of you are laughing at me right now! ) But there are so many schemes for trash pickup!
The town we moved from in CA had one company you had to contract with (private company), and they provided rolling bins for trash, greenwaste, and recycle. If it didn't fit in those, you had to get stickers for additional items (which were specifically limited). There were 2 sizes of trash bins, so you could save some money if you were a retired couple or a single person rather than a family of 4. It was a straight monthly fee, depending on the size of trash bin, billed every other month.
The town next to us had city trash pickup that had identical conditions to the private contractor mentioned above. Not tax supported. Good municipal accounting requires that you make services like that self-supporting.
Some developments in our area of CO have an HOA that contracts with the dispoal company and the fees are included in the monthly HOA dues.
We don't have that. We have about half a dozen companies to choose from. We pay $23 a month for trash and every other week recycle pickup. If we didnt' want recycle, it would be $21 a month. We can put the items out in any container we wish, as long as it's not over 35 pounds in one container (but they aren't really that picky). We can put unlimited household trash and recycles, and up to 10 bags of yard waste. That kind of freedom to get everything out at once, rather than doling out what fits in the can this week is pretty cool (we took out carpeting and padding in our old house and put chunks of it in our empty-nest neighbors' cans (with their permission) to get rid of it, and it still took almost a month.
It is weird, though, to have trash trucks from various companies driving through 3 different days a week, depending on each company's schedule.
My SIL lives in rural OR, and their trash collection is expensive, so they bag up the trash in the back of the truck and take it to the landfill once a month and pay a $10 dump fee.
The sticker thing would drive me nuts, although with the amount of trash we have normally it would be cheaper than what we pay now for trash removal. |

Good grief what a mess!
We have a couple companies to choose from. I pay a little over $100 every quarter and they supply us with the really large lid-attached plastic bins with wheels. It gets picked up weekly.
We do have the option of going to the dump for $7 a load but I would likely go on Saturdays and they are JAMMED packed. I went there a couple of weeks ago to dispose of an old love seat and I waited in line for a hour. |

Yes, they know. And they even have a pretty good idea of exactly what group of people is doing it in an organized fashion (there's a group of men on a certain block that they have witnesses reporting them doing it), but in a town this small, so many people are related that no one really turns anyone in for anything.
It's exasperating.
And no, the company has no plans on doing anything to change their system of stickers. Why would they? They already have my money once I buy the sticker, whether it's ever used or not. Their profit doesn't go down if my stickers are stolen and my trash not collected. And they know I have no other business to turn to. |

I pay a monthly fee for trash removal to a private business. They have a schedule and pick up our trash every week on Wednesday. If I don't put my trash out, they don't pick up. If I don't pay my bill, they don't pick up. I don't know why there would be a need for all these stickers.
It seems like an incredible waste of time and resources to have these stickers printed, purchased, placed on the bags, etc. They should simply have a route and people that don't keep their account up to date get dropped from the route. |

Ours is not.
But it works a bit differently than yours does!
It is still collected by the town, but if you wish to participate in town pickup, you must buy the actual Township garbage bags. It is $17.50 for a pack of 10, and they are fairly large bags.
There are a few "private" guys with a pickup truck and they charge $1/bag, or you can go to any of the local landfills (there are two within 15 minutes of us) and pay by the bag as well.
We choose to use the yellow township bags, and usually have one or maybe two per week, along with our recycle bins. |

Our trash service rents us a bin basically. You fill the bin, they pick up the trash in he bin.
I just assumed it was done that way everywhere. We're billed every othe month, so I would say it works out to about 1.50 a bag.

I've lived in a number of different states/counties and never heard of tax-funded trash removal before. You learn something new every day around here.
I currently live within the city limits, so trash is collected by the city. I pay a monthly fee combined with my water and sewer bill. We don't use trash cans but rather plastic bags (50 lb max). Black for trash and yard waste, blue for can/plastic/glass recycling. Paper/cardboard/boxes can either be tied or put into another box.
We get vouchers in the mail every three months that allow us to get the bags for free. If you run out of the free ones before the next vouchers come, you can buy the black bags at a reduced rate.
The city will also make a special trip if you have large items to be picked up... you just have to call.
There are also large commercial sized recycling bins in the Home Depot parking lot that are free to use. There is a city dump, with nominal fees, but I've not been there yet so I'm not sure just how convenient it is to use.
Some of the perks of living within city limits I guess.
Your sticker system is not very user friendly nor cost effective it would seem. |

we live in a city so there is a city wide contract with one company. they give us bins--and our town recycles/composts 80% of our waste.
if I have too much recycling..I just throw it in my neighbor's bin. none of us care. we can recycle everything for free at the city waste disposal site...and get rid of big trash there too. they will come by and pickup big trash for free 2x a year.

I pay about $8 a month for a nice guy in a big truck to come empty my big black garbage bin every Tuesday morning, around 10 am. He lent me the bin. He will take it with as much junk as I can stuff in as long as it does not leave the lid sitting more than 6 inches open. If we leave anything sitting beside it he will get out and toss it into the truck, but charges around $6 extra, I believe. If we have that much extra, dh just puts it in a big dumpster down the road on his way to work. Usually our bin is only half full.
The local landfill (free)is on my dh's way to work, so if we have anything big like a mattress, appliance or yard waste, we take it there. The kids like that. It is an adventure.
There is a large recycling bin across the main road from our house, so every few days I drive my plastic, cans and paper over there.
We have a local private service that will pick up recycling, but the teeny bin they give you is laughable. We shop at Costco a lot and they really over package everything.

We pay to have our own trashed removed, it is not supported by tax dollars. We have numerous companies to choose from.
What is up with the stickers? So they know who has paid for the service? Geez oh Pete, don't they have a list of paying customers? I would think if in my city of 500,000 with numerous different trash companies and thousands of customers they manage to keep their own customers straght, a single trash company in a city would be able to do the same. (And no, my trash cans are not marked with the trash company name)
Perhaps a second company is needed in your city....

We don't have tax-funded trash removal (never have - didn't know that was done). We pay a private company a flat rate every two months for garbage/recycling services. Our rate is based on the size of our garbage can. We have the smallest garbage can and the largest recycling can. We pay $42.50 every two months for once a week pick-up. If any bags are put out for collection, they are taken, and we are charged on our next bill.
The way your company does it sounds stupid. I would ask why they can't bill for excess bags instead of doing this prepaid sticker business, which obviously isn't working.

The city I grew up in has tax-funded trash pick up. The trash men are city employees. I remember when a friend of mine moved to another city, left his trash out and wondered why it wasn't picked up. He didn't know you had to contact a private company to come pick up the trash.
Every city I have lived in since moving out of my parent's house we have had to contact someone for trash pickup. The trash men work for a private company. The fee is put onto our water bill. The sticker thing is crazy. |

We have had city trash before and we paid the trash water and sewer together in one bill. Here it is a private outfit but they gave us three bins - trash, recycle, yard waste - and they pick up once a week. They drive the modern trucks that lift and dump the bins so the driver never gets out to lift cans. if they can not grab your bin because it's too close to a parked car or turned the wrong way, they don't pick up.
Stickers on bags? That is bananas. |

We do not tax funded trash service here but most of the counties surrounding us does. We have choices: buy county trash bags for $1.50 each (they are decently big - I am not sure of the size) & drive them to a local collection dump - we can recycle here for free. The dumps were all built at the local fire stations so fairly close to everyone. Or we can hire one of the many private haulers - that's what we do. We only pay $36 every 3 months they provide a trash can & a recycling can.
ETA: that sticker system is stupid- how big is the sticker - it had to waste time having the collector check every bag for a sticker. I think the specific bags are a much better idea. Maybe start a petition and get to your local councilman/commissioner. |

I don't think anyone pays for garbage hauling through taxes. Here we pay for it with our city water bill. Garbage hauling, despite what some may believe, is not cheap. Each one of those trucks costs several hundred thousands of dollars. Landfills are exorbitantly expensive to create, maintain and run. There is a ton of engineering that goes into them.
Some cities have their own trucks and landfills, others contract through a waste company. Yours, unfortunately, is contracted and if it's a small town, I'm sure private companies aren't scrambling for the business and it isn't worth the expense to them.
Which garbage company is it? It seems like an incredibly inefficient method of collection.

We have trash, recycling and green waste collection provided by the city. Our region is actually pretty awesome for waste management. Except the next city over. They have private collection. |

The City of Mobile garbage pick up is funded through the city tax dollars BUT it's only picked up every other week. And they wonder why there is such a trash problem in one of the rivers. I can't imagine how bad it must smell in the summer.

Oh, and if we have other stuff to go to the dump (broken household type stuff) it's a minimum $20 charge to use the transfer station. Yard/construction waste transfer station is by weight only. So is the trash transfer station, but it takes a lot to surpass the $20 minimum for most residents. You have to be like hauling a trailer full of crap. Not taking the dead bbq, broken chair, etc. |

We have only ever had tax funded garbage removal when we lived in pittsburgh, but everywhere else we just pay a fee (every 3 months) and they come and pick up whatever we put out. I have NEVER heard of a situation like the OP, even my dad who lives in the middle of the woods on a dirt road gets a normal pickup like I mentioned. I can't imagine leaving bags out on the street with food/etc - wouldn't animals rip them to shreds?

I grew up in NY and NJ where the trash was picked up by the city. When I left home, they started providing recycling bins as well. I moved to GA and you have to contract a private company. There are several companies to choose from.
I pay about $13 a month for a once a week pick up, they provide a bin. What is unfortunate is that they charge significantly more for recycling. That is my only problem with them... but it's definitely not as bad as what you are dealing with!

The city I grew up in has tax-funded trash pick up. The trash men are city employees. I remember when a friend of mine moved to another city, left his trash out and wondered why it wasn't picked up. He didn't know you had to contact a private company to come pick up the trash.
that's how I felt, lol I thought every large-ish town had city workers collecting garbage, LOL
they also collected yard waste twice a year-didn't even need to bag it-just shove it in the street and they come by and suck it up, lol

When my mom had something similar she purchased bags - not just stickers. She liked it because as a single person who recycled she could get down to just a few bags per month.
In the interim could you put clear packing tape over the stickers to perhaps make them difficult to remove? |

Wow, some people have some cheap garbage pick up. We pay $127 every three months. We have one large garbage bin, one large recycle bin and one large yard waste bin. Garbage gets picked up every week. Recycled every other week. It used to be every week but we just got new, larger bins so they changed it to every other week. Yard waste is every week Apr/May-Oct. They don't pick up during the winter. If we have extra recyled stuff we can put it out and they will take it for free. Like extra boxes or paper. They won't take any oversized large items like couches or stoves. Those we have to take to transfer station. There is a min. $20 or $25 charge. So you really have to make it worth your while to drive out to the transfer station. Which for us is about 1/2 hr away.
