Recently we lost both our german shepherds. My dd is desperate to find a new dog but I (thought) was not ready.

Her father took her to the shelter to look and they liked this pit bull. She asked me what breed dog I would want. I told her the right breed would find us.

Well last night I was cooking dinner and turned around and this dog was up on the back stairs looking in the glass door wagging his tail. He was the cutest thing I have seen in a LONG time.

He was yellow/golden. Almost the size of the shepherds. Long haired. Puffy like a snowball. His head was Huge and boxy. His butt was flat like an ottoman.

So anyone have a puffy, cute dog like that? Maybe a lab mix of some sort? I need to know what to look for. I think this dog belonged to someone but I want to keep looking for something like him at the shelter. I think he came to my door for a reason.

Puffy and yellow and large with a boxy head sounds like a chow/lab or Golden mix.
I'm not fond of chows at all but I'm sure there are many nice ones I just haven't met. I am VERY fond of lab mixes, particularly yellow labs, but chows can be pretty temperamental.

It sounds like a Chow-they are very very fluffy. They can also have some bad temperament issues. Meaning they can be extremely protective of their families and will not hesitate to defend them at all times if they perceive someone to be a threat.

Dh said chow too. I personally didn't see it in this dog and he was sooooo happy. (not that chows can't be happy )
Maybe thats the lab part coming out.

I was just hoping this sounded like a breed I wasn't familiar with.

I wish I could've got a pic of this cutie.

Chows are adorable, but their personalities seldom match their looks.

Golden retrievers are about the same size as yellow labs, but fluffier. Was it fluffy like a lion or just lots of yellow hair? When we adopted a stray, I started by googling dog breeds in general.

Was thinking Akita mix until you said "boxy head." That could be lab, mastiff, even share pei...

could it have been a goldendoodle? not sure if they have 'boxy' enough heads like you're describing... did you see its tongue? chows usually have dark-colored tongues.

A good friend of mine Laura has always had Chow mixes, great dogs. Just the right amount of loyal mixed with sweet. The two she has right now are Topper and Lassie, both are solid black. One looks very Chow the other looks more lab with some poof to him.

I think its a cross between a chow and a labrador retriever. a chowbrador? Now I can't find any pics to link as cute as this guy was last night.

Does this link to a golden chowbrador? chowbrador?

If i remember right, wheaten terriers - i totally spelled that wrong, i know - are pale golden, prone to extreme fluff and really, really friendly. They are about lab size, tho i think (?) a lighter build - not as solid. Outgoing, cheerful to the point of manic, very very active dogs.

If i remember right from my grooming days.

We have a chow/wheaten. She has that boxy face and flat butt. Most of all she is fluffy soft.
