A couple of weeks ago I had a pain in my leg. I didn't think much of it and went on. We have a lot going on and it wasn't a really bad pain and I wondered if I had hit it or something. I did have a couple bruises on my leg.
Shortly after that I had more swelling then normal in my legs. Sometimes when I am really stressed I puff up a bit on my lower half. If it is in the summer or a time I have to sit a lot than it is worse. It was around that time of the month and after a week or so he seem to subside.
The last week the swelling is back. One of my legs is a bit tingly and my feet are colder than normal.
Good grief I feel like this is my year to physically fall apart. I had a blood clot (superficial) about 4 years ago and I have a clotting disorder too. I don't take anything for it and outside of pregnancy have told I wouldn't need to. During pregnancy or major surgery recovery I do Lovanox for a blood thinner.
I did put on some compression pants yesterday and that helped a bit but when I woke up this morning it wasn't any better.
I don't have any other health issues that I am aware of and just had my full physical, labs, etc. Everything was normal.
When I read online it sounded to me like possibly a circulation issue. The last couple weeks when I got in the shower the hot water felt different on my feet for the first minute or so but then it went away.
TIA

The swelling and the pain would have me at the doctor getting checked for a clot, especially since you said you have a clotting disorder. |

At the very least, call the doctor and describe what's happening. Don't mess around in case it is a blood clot. |

It just feels different than the first time and if I thought it was a clot I would have ran there but it has been more several symptoms adding up over the last few weeks and the swelling not going down. Thanks and I will call on Monday. |

I used to have similar symptoms - went to the doctor and everything checked out OK. I discovered my symptoms are very diet driven. If I go overboard with carbs, sugar, caffeine or salt my ankles swell. If I don't stay hydrated my ankles swell just like you describe - especially sugar. If I sit too long they swell. My monthly cycles also impacts the situation. It's like a juggling act trying to keep everything balanced but paying attention to the diet details has really helped.

I have circulation issues when my thyroid goes out of wack but I have hyperthyroidism. I always start to bruise easy.
But for me water never feels hot enough. |

You said your last blood clot was superficial. Your symptoms could be different if this is a deep vein thrombosis instead of a superficial clot. If you have a history of clots, have a clotting disorder, and have these symptoms, I would advise you to be seen soon. Seriously. DVTs aren't something to play around with. Hopefully it isn't, but I wouldn't take any chances.

Update 1/28- I called my blood doctor to ask for the nurses input and she said I want to get you in for a scan (sonogram on my legs for a clot) and called me back and said come on in. No clots!!!! She referred me to see a vascular surgeon for any addition vein issues.
WillowJane-I have noticed that before too. But this is so much more severe that I thought it had to be something more. Perhaps I need to be super strict for a few days or so to see how it effects it. I eat pretty clean but not 100%. I do notice it worse around my cycle too.
Leslie-Thanks! I know they tested my thyriod and said it was fine but I have also heard there is more thyriod test then just some of the basic ones too. I need to check one which ones they did.
Cindy-Yeah they did a CBC and everything was fine including my blood sugar. The only thing that was a tad low was my folate but just by a small amount. I am taking folic acid too.

Sounds like a blood clot to me.
I'm glad you got a scan and it was clear.
I tend to just drink more water when my legs swell. Especially in the summer or when we have major weather changes ( like sudden hot humid weather)
Good luck |
